These 2 reasons become the driving factor when independently inventing a bicycle (linings). In general, almost anyone can make such a tuning element. This is not too difficult a task. The main thing is to get the right sizes.
How to make door sills with your own hands
Do-it-yourself door sill covers are a topic that interests many car owners. This is explained by various reasons:
- Firstly, homemade tuning looks better, because it is unique and completes the image of the car. The main thing is that it is done with high quality and with love.
- Secondly, homemade pads will cost less than the original ones. Products presented by manufacturers often exceed all possible expectations in cost. Even if you choose plastic, for an inexpensive foreign car it will cost an unreasonable amount.
Anyone can make such a tuning element, the main thing is to choose the right dimensions, take into account the installation technology and other points.
There are many articles on this topic on the Internet. At the same time, we can roughly imagine two ways to create overlays - from cheaper models created by domestic manufacturers, or from scrap materials on our own. Whatever method is chosen, each has its own advantages and is used quite often.
Wall panel overlays
A minimum of skills and tools are required to create this element from wall panels. And the question of how to make door sills with your own hands will disappear, because the process reveals so many nuances of the work.
Once all the elements for the procedure have been selected, you should proceed with it:
- Self-tapping screws are needed for fixation, so holes are made in the threshold for them. They need to be treated with anti-corrosion material, because in reality the bottom is constantly exposed to chemicals and moisture, which negatively affects its condition.
- Using self-tapping screws to attach the guides, you can get a visually lower car.
- The panel itself is fixed to the installed guides; the same screws are used for fixation.
- To make the lining more reliable, it should be wrapped in fiberglass soaked in glue.
- To visually eliminate the resulting transitions and cracks, it is worth using putty and primer, which are then sanded to obtain a smooth surface.
- We select the required color for painting, taking into account the color of the body, and apply the paint coating.
These overlays look beautiful, but they won’t last as long as the next option.
Upgrading the trunk of a car
Quite often, car owners are interested in trunk tuning issues. Someone strives to make it more functional, tries to increase the space, or makes paneling, attaches special shelves, clamps for more convenient transportation of cargo.
Still others focus on improving acoustic parameters or are trying to make opening and closing trunks more convenient. For example, they make an additional handle for the fifth door or an electrically conductive lock.
Let's look at how to do a simple trunk tuning with your own hands, namely, install chrome lining on the trunk, a handle for closing and an electric drive for the lock.
Installation of the electric lock drive
Tuning the trunk, namely installing an electric lock, can significantly simplify the life of the car owner. In order to open the trunk you need keys, and to do this you have to turn off the car every time. Installing an electric drive solves this problem. How to install and connect everything? First of all, you need to buy the electric drive itself, a new lock for it, a mount for fuses, terminals, electrical tape and wires. You will also need tools: wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers.
After all the necessary materials have been purchased, proceed to the process of dismantling the old lock. Remove the plastic trunk trim and dismantle the old lock. After this, you should disconnect the car from the power supply and you can proceed to wiring. It is best to connect from the cigarette lighter; the button itself can be installed in any place convenient for you. A fuse must be installed between the cigarette lighter and the electric drive button. Next, you make a power connection using electrical blocks and lay the wiring along the thresholds of the car into the luggage compartment. After this, you need to install the electric drive and a new lock in the existing hole.
Next, proceed directly to connecting the electric drive. In this case, it is very important to do everything in accordance with the instructions of the electric drive itself and observe the polarity, otherwise the lock will not open. After everything is connected, isolate the connection points, turn on the battery and check the operation. So, now you have no problems with opening, now you need to make closing it easier.
Installing an additional handle
Installation of chrome trims
Once you have figured out the functional side of the upgrade, proceed to installing the chrome trim. To do this, you just need to buy a chrome trim for the trunk for your car brand, degrease the installation site and, after removing the protective film from the adhesive side, stick it in the required place.
You can similarly decorate your car with chrome trim in other places. Quite often they install chrome trim on the hood, radiator grill, or even use them to tune the roof of a car.
Door sills from ready-made models
Such door sill covers are created with your own hands from models of domestic manufacturers. Before purchasing the required part, it is necessary to take measurements, because this is the only way to choose the best option.
Online spare parts stores offer a wide range of necessary components. But it is not always possible to select linings taking into account all the characteristics, then you have to modify them with your own hands. In this case, the installation will look like this:
- We apply the trim to the threshold, using a marker we mark the excess. Using a grinder, we cut off the excess; all work should be done without haste. After all the procedures, it’s worth trying it on and evaluating what happened. If all the work is done correctly, the part should fall into place.
- To secure the overlay, you should use one of the proposed options - fiberglass or epoxy glue.
- The threshold and overlays are subject to subsequent puttying, priming and painting. The overlay will look like the original one.
It is worth noting that this method of creating an overlay with your own hands is considered a very labor-intensive process that requires effort and time. But you will have to work even more if you have a welding machine and metal.
Manufacturing process
1. There are a number of benefits that can be obtained from making your own. These include:
Elements of industrial (factory) production are often made of thin and unreliable materials that quickly fail.
2. The disadvantage of doing it yourself can be the large amount of time it takes, but the time spent will be fully compensated by the quality of the work.
3. First you need to select the material from which the thresholds will be made. The most common are:
4. The styrofoam threshold, however, will only serve as a decorative and protective element for the body. It will not bear a heavy load. If you plan to make it yourself, then you should remember this nuance.
5. The diameter of the pipe may vary, the best option would be a pipe of 5 cm.
6. In addition to the material for manufacturing, you will need to purchase additional parts such as:
7. The threshold can be held on the body using fasteners on the bottom of the body. There are special holes for this.
8. The element itself can be made by welding pipes.
9. Since the shape of the pipe can be different, both types can be used to make posts from a square pipe onto which a round pipe is welded. The result is a very stylish element.
10. If you are wondering how to make a threshold in a car without welding, then you should choose a larger diameter pipe or use styrofoam. You can also bend a suitable sheet of metal. But both styrofoam and metal do not have sufficient strength to perform all the functions of the threshold.
11. During the manufacturing process, it is necessary to regularly try on the workpiece for the car in order to eliminate all defects and adjust it to the appropriate size.
12. The finished part must be cleaned, sanded and painted.
13. The paint must be of high quality, because it will have to withstand mechanical stress from flying gravel.
It is best to apply a preliminary coat of primer, followed by a coat of paint.
14. For reliability, you can make the edging with rubber and a layer of stainless metal.
15. If rust or any damage appears during operation, then instead of the task of how to make thresholds on a car yourself, the task will be how to repair them.
16. First you need to dismantle the old parts and clean the entire surface.
17. Once aligned, they are attached to the vehicle.
18. You can paint it after fixing it.
19. The surface can be protected from corrosion using special means. Anti-corrosion protection is not recommended to be done with polyurethane foam, since at home it is not possible to apply it efficiently.
Knowing whether it is possible to make a threshold for a car, each car owner can choose between working with his own hands and contacting a service center. Making any parts for a car yourself is often more pleasant for motorists than entrusting their vehicle to strangers.
Car sills are the part of our vehicle that is exposed to negative environmental influences in the first place.
Iron parts
The creation of such an overlay can be considered a whole work of art. On the one hand, this is a big cost savings, and besides, no one will have such an element; on the other hand, this is a labor-intensive process.
If you decide to make the door sills yourself, the video presents the necessary elements to carry out this procedure. The first step is to select a stainless steel sheet that will be amenable to basic manipulation - it will bend:
- Having measured the threshold, it is necessary to cut the required piece of stainless steel according to the obtained dimensions.
- We bend the workpiece to measure and, if necessary, correct its shape, as was done in the previous method.
- The final stage will be puttying, priming and painting the resulting element.
Although the procedure allows you to save money, more time will be spent than in the previous case, and skills in working with a welding machine will be required.
Method 2. Filling the solution
This method is appropriate if the threshold just needs to be raised a little. To a height that is less than the height of the brick (6.5 cm). But in some cases it can be used regardless of how high the threshold is supposed to be mounted. This method is quite popular, and, according to many builders, it is more convenient and faster than the previous one.
From building materials we will need:
- cement-sand mixture M-150. It is perfect for these purposes; moreover, it is relatively inexpensive. At the current exchange rate - ≈100 ₽ - 1 bag (50 kg),
- penetrating primer and brush for applying it,
- board for constructing formwork. Its thickness should be ≈25 mm, its length should be ≈10 cm greater than the width of the doorway (10 cm on each side), and the height should be what is needed (depending on how high the finished threshold should be),
Here is a small list of tools that will be useful to us during our work:
- a bucket (metal) in which the solution will be mixed (or other suitable container),
- drill mixer,
- putty knife,
- construction float for grinding the surface.
The work of filling the threshold occurs according to the following scheme:
- preparation of the base. It is necessary to remove all small (and large, respectively) debris, cut off any protruding foam, apply a layer of penetrating primer to the surface,
- installation of formwork. To do this, the board needs to be installed across the passage with its edge - and securely fixed. Any heavy object is suitable for fixing: bricks, a bag of mortar, etc.
- preparing the solution strictly according to the instructions,
- filling. If the layer is thick enough - 10–15 cm - then construction waste can be placed into the thickness of the concrete - fragments of bricks or ceramics, crushed stone can also be used. If it is possible to lay reinforcement, great! Nobody says to knit a full-fledged reinforcing belt. You don't have to connect anything at all. Moreover, it is not necessary to use exactly the same corrugated reinforcement that is usually used when pouring. As we have already mentioned, improvisation would be quite appropriate: any metal products will do - even scraps of pipes and other old plumbing fixtures, even metal mesh, even fragments of old equipment. In general, any metal will do. This makes the structure more durable and reliable,
- after the top layer has dried, grout with a construction float (as, indeed, in the first case).
We'll talk about finishing later. In the meantime, we are waiting for a third option to resolve the issue.
The simplest option is polystyrene foam
This option won’t cost much, and you don’t mind it, you can make such overlays all the time. The only difficulty is cutting out the correct shape. You will have to do this slowly and carefully if you want the overlay to look beautiful. Otherwise, all roughness will be noticeable.
The resulting workpiece is processed with fiberglass several times. Again, epoxy glue is used for fixation. To fix the resulting cracks, putty, primer and painting are used. This is the only way to achieve a beautiful transition. In a similar way, some car owners apply polyurethane foam. Such a decorative element can then be easily dismantled, but the element with self-tapping screws is stronger, but when you get tired of it, it will be more difficult to remove it.

Such popularity of overlays is explained by the fact that everyone tries to improve their car; this type of tuning is one of the simplest and most affordable. Moreover, everyone can carry out all the procedures independently.

It turned out beautifully, about ten years ago I wanted to do something similar, but abandoned this idea because... it will wear out (scratch) very quickly and the appearance will be lost.
enough for a couple of years!
Idk, I doubt it, everything will depend on the “raised” legs, of course the varnish was applied well, but the composite itself is scratched by wiping with a soft, clean rag, the effect of a “spider web” is obtained.
I know that it scratches “great”, that’s why the varnish was applied in three layers, maybe a 300 micron armor film!
as an option, but I think something more durable, for example D16AT, one of these days they will bring this material (duralumin + aluminum), I’ll try to engrave and see how it will look, if not very good, I can fill it with paint or make it light))
“duralumin + aluminum” - actually, such a thing does not exist in nature)))
“duralumin + aluminum” - actually, such a thing does not exist in nature)))
I may not have expressed myself correctly, but I think it’s clear, the common people call duralumin, it’s the same thing as, for example, a composite, they call it dibond, but if you want to get to the bottom of it, then of course it’s wrong :-))
don’t worry), I’m like that, by the way, otherwise you’ll come across a competent girl - you’ll screw up)))
I’m not worried, but someone was offended)) he better learn to cook borscht, otherwise he’ll go astray and no one will marry him :-))
Ha-Ha-Ha! Well, well... It’s obviously more interesting and more fun to be smart!
By the way, the D16T is pretty cool for this job, linings. ordinary aluminum with embossing - for the eyes.
why is it cool? There will be more “fuss” with a tin than there’s any point in doing this anyway, but there are enough trinkets that won’t last long))
Yes, because it’s “duralumin”! As you say))) Tough, fragile. It’s difficult to give shape - you’ll get tired of letting go. Nobody remembers about China, 3 is embossed behind the eyes. Yes, even 2 is enough: you’ll scrap the car, and they’ll all bury us, but the pad will remain)

Simple and affordable ways to do your own car body tuning
For many car enthusiasts, car tuning has no longer become a necessity, a need to improve something on the car, but rather a favorite pastime, a hobby. This is a car owner’s way of life, his way of self-expression and the opportunity to highlight his favorite car among hundreds of thousands of others. Car body tuning mostly refers to aesthetic types of tuning, although the technical parameters of the car can also be improved. This is the most obvious type of tuning. The results of improving the body or its individual parts please the eye not only of the car owner himself, but also of everyone around him. You can tune almost everything - from thresholds and door handles to the trunk lid, hood or roof of the car.
Tuning car thresholds
One of the most popular types of external tuning is the production of door sills. This is the easiest way to improve the appearance of a car, which almost everyone can do. The easiest way, of course, would be to buy a ready-made version of the overlays and simply install them in the right place. Or take the car to a car service center, where they will do everything for you. However, it is much more interesting and cheaper to do the tuning yourself, install and make thresholds on your car yourself.
What is needed for this? The first thing is to make the door sills yourself. They can be made from metal, wall panels or even foam plastic.
Foam thresholds are the easiest to make. To do this you will need a piece of polystyrene foam, fiberglass, paint, primer and putty. From polystyrene foam, cut out the required threshold in shape and size, cover it with fiberglass several times, and glue it in the right place. After this, puttying, priming and painting are carried out. However, this option for manufacturing linings is the least reliable.
The strongest, of course, will be metal thresholds, but in order to do everything yourself you will need skills in working with welding and metal. In addition, the design itself will cost you quite a lot. That is why, most often, door sills are made from wall panels. They are quite easy to make and require a minimum of skills and funds. In order to make such thresholds, you will need to purchase wall panels, self-tapping screws and guides for drywall, as well as an anti-corrosion agent, epoxy resin, varnish, putty paint and primer. After purchasing everything you need, you begin manufacturing and installation. First you need to drill a hole in the body for self-tapping screws and treat everything with an anti-corrosion compound. After this, use self-tapping screws to attach the guides for the drywall and, to them, the panels. Then, for greater rigidity of the structure, you wrap it in fiberglass impregnated with epoxy glue. After everything has dried, you can move on to priming, puttying, painting and varnishing the resulting structure.
Lada 2114 (16valve wells filled) › Logbook › Painting plastic thresholds
Greetings to all!
In this post I’ll tell you how I painted the thresholds from which the paint was flying off. All the plastic (moldings, bumpers, sills) were painted poorly on my car. And besides, driving on a road strewn with crushed stone contributed to the delamination.
I decided to paint it not with a spray can, but normally, with good paint and varnish. At the same time, I tested and tried the spray guns and varnish purchased for painting the nine.
So the process is as follows:
We remove the thresholds and wash off the remaining old paint with a remover.
Ultimately, you need to have thresholds like this, completely cleared.
Then, they need to be matted with P800 sandpaper, you can also use Scotchbrite, but I use sandpaper. It is better to sand with water.
And then I remembered that the right threshold was catching on the door, I need to sharpen it somehow, so foolishly I take a vinyl circle and start cleaning where it catches. In short, I ruined the threshold) I’ll have to buy a new one and paint it.
Next, we spread the soil over the plastic. Many people ask how to dilute varnishes, primers and paints. All acrylic materials are diluted with acrylic solvents. Such as P5 or P12. The difference between them is that P5 evaporates faster, and P12 evaporates slower. Therefore: If the temperature during painting is below 20 degrees, P5 is better, and if higher, then P12. But I always use P12, since with it the varnish or primer spreads longer, thereby acquiring the desired shagreen. And if it’s cool indoors or outdoors, then simply do more interlayer drying.
We prime with a thicker layer, since then the primer will be rubbed under the base with P1000 sandpaper. The first layer is sprayed for adhesion. We pour the rest more thickly, but naturally in moderation, so as not to drip.
We set it to dry on the radiator; while it is drying, we prepare the varnish and base. I used SOLID XS varnish, bought it for painting the nine, and decided to try it, to get used to it. As it turned out later, the varnish is excellent; it’s not so easy to make a smudge on it. It comes ready-made, meaning there is no need to dilute it.
So, I have prepared the varnish, I have the base in jars without labels, everyone dilutes it in their own way, if you dilute it thinly, it will cover poorly, thickly, the base will go on with shagreen and the wrong grain. For silver color this is very critical. I apply it to my eye so that drops drip from the stick, I don’t know how to explain it, you need to feel it. After the primer has dried, wash it with water using P1000 sandpaper. Don’t forget to DEGREASE and WIPE with a STICKY ANTI-STATIC CLOTH to remove dust before applying the base.
Painted with base. Now it's time to varnish. We wash the spray gun and fill it with varnish. Compressor pressure. For varnish 2 atm for the base somewhere around 2-2.5.

Body tuning is becoming increasingly popular today. Almost everyone strives to change something in the appearance or functionality of their car. And he tries to do this on his own, with his own hands. After all, most of the work is carried out quite simply and does not require special skills. All you need is imagination, a little material and the desire to do something. And although for the most part body tuning does not affect the functionality of the car, it is a great way to decorate your car yourself.

Types of homemade pads
How to make door sill covers with your own hands? To answer this question, you need to understand how such a body kit is assembled. In total, there are 2 strategies for producing linings in a single garage:
- Customization of a ready-made version from a cheaper model;
- Completely self-assembled part.
Both options have their pros and cons. In practice, both of these methods are used quite often.
Ready option
Usually, for such alterations, thresholds from domestic cars are taken. Most often, these are classics or nines. The choice depends on your car model. Before purchasing a spare part, it is better to measure the sills of your car. And, based on these characteristics, select linings. But, in any case, you will have to modify it. The installation process is as follows:
- First you need to try the trim on the threshold, and use a marker to mark everything that is unnecessary. Next, take a grinder and cut off the marked parts. After that, we try it on the threshold again. If everything is done correctly, then it should fall into place;
- The resulting overlay is installed on the threshold and secured with fiberglass and epoxy glue;
- We putty the threshold and trim;
- We prime and paint.
This completes the work of remaking the finished overlay. The most difficult step is sizing. This is the most time- and effort-consuming work.
Let's sum it up
What else to say. There are a number of videos on YouTube hosting. They clearly show the procedure for repairing and restoring thresholds on different cars.
Yes, renovation is the solution. This is a way to extend the life of parts.
But objectively it is better to change the details. Especially when the threshold is removable. This is the right decision you can make. Less hassle, but the result will be better.
With non-removable ones the situation is much more complicated. And when rust has affected 30-50% of the surfaces of a part, it may be worth thinking about selling the car or disposing of it. It depends on the condition of the rest of the body.
I want to wish you good luck and less rust on your car, as well as less dents.

Wall panel overlays
The easiest option for self-assembly is wall panels. To make such overlays you will need a minimum of skills and tools. You need to purchase:
- Wall panels; Guides for drywall;
- Self-tapping screws;
- Anti-corrosion;
- Epoxy resin;
- Fiberglass;
- Putty and primer;
- Dye.
After purchasing everything you need, we proceed to assembling the structure:
- We drill holes in the threshold for self-tapping screws. It is imperative to treat them with anti-corrosion;
- The guides are attached to the threshold using self-tapping screws. If you want to get a visually lower car, you can attach another one to the existing guides;
- Plastic panels are attached to the resulting frame of guides. The same self-tapping screws serve as fasteners;
- The fiberglass fabric is impregnated with epoxy glue and wrapped around the resulting overlay. This gives it greater reliability and strength;
- It is necessary to putty the threshold, carefully leveling the cracks. After which you need to prime the surface well;
- Paint the trim in a suitable color.
The only drawback of such a pad is its deterioration during constant travel over potholes. But even taking this into account, they last quite a long time and look just great.
From iron
If you have a welding machine at hand and you know how to use it, then the simplest solution would be to make iron plates. This will allow you to save a lot on this process. For this job you will need a stainless steel sheet. It should bend well:
- We carefully measure the threshold, after which the required piece of stainless steel is cut out according to the obtained dimensions;
- The resulting workpiece must be carefully bent;
- We weld the workpiece into place and make final adjustments to the shape during the process;
- The resulting overlay is puttied, primed and painted.
Styrofoam
This is the simplest option:
- A foam mold is cut out. This is the most difficult moment. You need to do everything very carefully so that the overlay looks beautiful;
- The resulting workpiece is covered with fiberglass in several layers;
- The finished trim is attached to the threshold using epoxy glue, puttied, primed, and painted;
- Polyurethane foam pads are made in the same way.
Conclusion
. Many craftsmen make various devices for tuning their car. This allows you to make the car original. This is why the question of how to make door sills with your own hands is so popular. After all, this is the easiest and most convenient way to change the appearance of your car. Every car enthusiast can do this kind of tuning at minimal cost.

Equipment and assembly
Do-it-yourself assembly is done on a surface with ideal horizontality. Assembly is carried out in the following steps:
- Place the door leaf on the floor, raising it to the level of the width of the beam above the floor. During the process, the beam should move easily without excessive clearance. When assembling the box, you need to provide 3-4 mm gaps on all sides. If the gaps in the purchased box are less than the required value, the fastening nails are removed.
- 2 beams are laid on both sides of the canvas, ensuring a gap between the beam and the frame.
- The top crossbar is being prepared. It is necessary to mark the length and use a saw to prepare a groove into which the side beam will be attached. Then, at a distance of 200 mm from the edge of the fabric, mark the loops.
- Drill holes for nails. To connect elements, nails 70-90 mm long are usually used. They are driven in 2 pieces from the hinge side. From the lock side, 1 nail is driven in between the middle and the edge of the beam.
