Master class: how to make a tutu skirt from tulle with your own hands

I think all the mothers of the world will agree, there is nothing more charming in the world than a baby in a tutu skirt.
By the way, the tutu skirt, or tutu as it is also called, is a real find. After all, with its help you can make almost any costume for a girl for the New Year, birthday or matinee in kindergarten, etc. In general, it doesn’t matter on the eve of what holiday you decide to make a tutu skirt with your own hands, the main thing is that with the help of our selection of master classes you will surely cope with this task with ease. I won’t focus too much on the choice of materials. You will need tulle, fortunately, nowadays the choice is simply huge. You can buy tulle in bobbins or in large rolls, of any color and different hardness. Plus the base on which the tulle will be “attached”. This can be a ribbon, elastic band or knitted base - see the master classes below for more details.

Fashion trends

The tulle skirt is light and delicate, it can be combined with a wide variety of elements of your wardrobe. You can wear a top, a T-shirt, a blouse and all this will look extremely beautiful. It will be very difficult to find an identical model of a skirt in a store that you make with your own hands, so such needlework may interest you. After the first successful execution of your plan, it will be much easier for you to work with both tulle and other materials.

It is recommended to use patterns with which you can cut out all the details for the future product. Think in advance about the style of the skirt, whether accessories and other components will be used. The combination of such products will always be interesting and in demand. All modern fashion trends are directly related to tulle, as it is truly beautiful and interesting to fashion designers.

The advantage of a tulle skirt is that it goes well with sneakers, shoes, ballet flats and even flip flops

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. You can also make a tulle skirt for your daughter.

In this case, everything is also done according to a pre-developed plan, only the appropriate length is taken.

How much tulle do you need for a tutu skirt?

A few words about how to calculate the required amount of tulle. For a detailed example of tulle calculation, see the photo instructions below.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to buy tulle in bobbins. But ordinary tulle can also be carefully cut into standard 15 cm strips. Watch the video on how to quickly and easily cut ordinary tulle for a TUTU tutu skirt - both with smooth and sharp edges.

How to make a tutu skirt from tulle master class

So, the first version of the skirt with the base as a ribbon. In this case, you will get an apron skirt. We cut the tulle into strips, their length should correspond to the desired length of the skirt multiplied by 2. Next, fold the strip in half and tie the ribbon as shown in the photo in points No. 7-9.

We continue to tie the ribbon with tulle until the skirt is completely formed. At the end, for beauty, you can cover the nodules with a cloth.

Or you can leave it as is.

For greater reliability of such a skirt, make “tacks” at the beginning and at the end. To do this, make knots on the base of the ribbon itself (at the beginning of photo No. 3 and at the end of No. 8), additionally tie the first and last tulle ribbon in half.

It turns out to be a beautiful tulle skirt.

The photo below shows a knot that can be used to secure the previous option. Those. you first thread the ends of the ribbon into the loop as shown in the instructions, then tighten the knot as shown in the photo below (you will only need to thread the ends of the ribbon again). Or you can use this knotting method as a DIY way to make a skirt. You tie loops on strips of tulle, which you simply put on the ribbon.

Although the previous options have a drawback: there is a possibility that the tape will come undone at the most inopportune moment. Therefore, it is better to use a wide elastic band. Its length should be equal to your daughter’s waist circumference minus 2-3 cm and plus a seam allowance. We sew the elastic band into a single ring, put it on a hanger, jar or box (this is necessary to make it more convenient to tie). We tie it in the same simple way, the main thing is to pay attention to the fact that you do not need to tighten the tulle too much (the elastic band should not be pinched).

In addition to a wide elastic band, a narrow one will also work. In addition, to make a full tutu skirt, you can tie two strips of tulle at a time.

Tulle can also be tied with a simple knot (twice). The main thing to remember is that the elastic band should not be overtightened. In the video, the process of tying such knots begins at 3:47.

The finished tutu skirt can be decorated with a bow.

Ribbon bows simply tied to strips of tulle look cute.

Model selection

Feminine and weightless tulle skirts differ in their cut and length. Before you start sewing, you need to decide on the style, since not every model is easy to make. Types of skirts:

  1. The tutu is short, consists of several layers of semi-rigid tulle, sewn to a belt or elastic band.
  2. A tulle chopinka is an elongated model, sewn from one or several layers of soft material. The cut is rectangular, wedges, “sun” or “half-sun”.
  3. Tutu – strips of tulle that are attached to an elastic band or belt (without sewing).
  4. American or Pettiskirt is a combination of a tutu skirt and a sun pattern, creating a very fluffy product.
  5. With large frills - during manufacturing, strips of fabric are gathered and sewn onto the lining in tiers.

It is better for inexperienced craftswomen to start with such simple models as tutu and American.

According to the length of tulle skirts, they are divided into:

  • super-mini (very short, worn with leggings);
  • mini (above the knee);
  • knee-deep;
  • midi (below the knee);
  • maxi;
  • with differences in length.

Many people wonder how to find a model and how to sew a tulle skirt that will look good on its owner. First of all, you need to determine your body type, and also take into account your height, age, and build. Stylists' recommendations:

  1. Those with a pear-shaped figure need to choose a style so that excessive fluffiness does not weigh down the hips. A long Chopin skirt made of one or two layers of tulle with lining will look good.
  2. Short curvy models are also not suitable for an apple-shaped figure. It is better to stay with a moderate midi version. In this case, the waist can be slightly raised and emphasized with a belt.
  3. A full skirt will visually balance the “inverted triangle” figure. It will distract attention from the massive shoulders and give the hips the missing volume.

Very short curvy models are suitable for little girls and slender young girls who often use super minis for sports and dancing.

The length for young slender women can be any. As for overweight ladies, not every style of tulle skirt will suit them. It is better to choose a one-layer option with a lining. The length depends on height; knee-length, midi or maxi skirts are preferred.

Skirts with a difference in length are suitable for special occasions. As a rule, these are models with a train and a short front. They look spectacular at weddings, parties, and other celebrations. For convenience, the train can be made removable. It should be sewn from a softer tulle than the main product, so it will flow and fall beautifully.

How to make a beautiful tutu skirt with your own hands

In addition to additional decor in the form of bows and flowers from ribbons, you can beautifully hem the bottom of a tutu skirt. The result is stunning, and not much work. True, in this case you will have to resort to the help of a sewing machine. Choose a ribbon and thread to match the tulle, and make the skirt in a way that is convenient for you. From the ribbon, cut strips corresponding to the size of the tulle and sew them on.

Important: you need to burn the edges of the cut pieces of ribbon so that they do not fray.

For more details, watch the video instructions:

Wrap the belt nicely with the same ribbon.

The result is a simply gorgeous tutu skirt.

Video instructions in Russian: tutu skirt with satin ribbons (working with ribbons from 4:30).

Plus, if you make a tutu skirt according to this master class: the bottom will turn out with full rings, and not with hemispheres.

The original hem of the skirt can be done faster. Simply cut small strips of tulle in contrasting colors and tie them around the edges of the ribbon on both sides, as shown in the photo below.

Speaking of edges, you can make them ragged or pointed - cut the strips at an angle. And pay attention, this master class demonstrates a new method of fastening using an elastic thread.

Plus, due to the different lengths of the stripes and different colors, after separating them we get a beautiful multi-tiered skirt.

For greater clarity on how to fix tulle strips using an elastic thread, watch the video (from 4 minutes).

In addition, to create a multi-tiered mesh skirt, you can tie an elastic band first in one color, then in another.

Or combine the stripes, as shown in the photo below.

Another way to make an interesting skirt is to add stripes of fabric to the tulle.

Actually, you can make a tutu skirt purely from strips of fabric.

Instruction No. 2: pack with a train

Make a regular pack as described above. Then cut the ribbons of different lengths, stack them on top of each other in layers (place the longest ones at the bottom) and baste them, stepping back a few centimeters from the top edge of the stack. Next, stitch the entire stack to a wide ribbon, and then sew the ribbon itself to the knots on the base pack. From the ends of the ribbon you can tie a beautiful bow in front or on the side.

You can use an elastic band instead of tape. Cut long ribbons, but do not fill the entire circumference with them, but only half. This "half" skirt can be worn over or under the main skirt.

Knitted tutu skirt

Finally, a few words about knitted bases for a tutu skirt. In particular, in some online store (for example, on Aliexpress) you can order a factory-made, crocheted elastic band “pipe” (it is also called a top trumpet - you can use it to make dresses from tulle). Or buy a smaller copy of it: an “elastic bandage”, this is the same as a tube top, just smaller in size. Actually, the photo below shows a narrow elastic band (bandage). Working with it is quite simple; you tie it using any of the methods presented above.

Moreover, you can only knit a couple of bottom rows so that a small belt remains on top (as shown above). Or you can fill all the rows - this will give you a very full tutu skirt.

But keep in mind: if you tie all this elastic, the skirt will turn out heavier. Therefore, it is better to further strengthen this foundation. To do this, insert 2 narrow elastic bands in a checkerboard pattern from the wrong side into the “loops” (as shown in the photo instructions below). In addition, this technique is clearly demonstrated in the video above with satin ribbons.

Required Tools

It will be very easy for a novice seamstress to work with this material, as it is easy to process. But it is recommended to prepare some tools first. In addition to pieces of fabric of the required size, you will need:

  • centimeter tape for measurements;
  • scissors;
  • pins for chopping parts;
  • needle;
  • threads in the color of the fabric;
  • elastic band (for a tutu skirt you can use a checkerboard one, which is used to make hairbands);
  • satin ribbon for decorating the belt.

You also need to prepare your sewing machine by installing a needle for thin and stretch fabrics. If you plan to process the bottom, you will need bias tape.

Some types of tulle shrink. To avoid this, and at the same time eliminate all creases, you should steam the fabric with an iron before sewing.

Simple 4 ways to make a tutu skirt with your own hands

To make such a skirt, you will first need tulle (thin mesh material).

It can be purchased either in the form of a single piece or in rolls about 20 cm wide, of any color and different hardness .

You will also need a base on which the material will be attached.

This can be a wide (about 3 cm) elastic band or an elastic band.

Advice! It is better to use tulle of medium hardness for this purpose, since the hard one is noticeably prickly, and the soft one does not hold its shape.

To correctly calculate the required amount of fabric, it is advisable to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • for babies, products with a length of 20-25 cm are suitable (40-60 strips of fabric measuring 15x50 cm will be needed);
  • for girls 3-5 years old, a skirt 30-35 cm long with an addition of 6 cm per knot is suitable (strips of material measuring 12x66 cm will be required);
  • for adults - add 5-6 cm per knot to the desired length (80-120 strips will be needed depending on the waist size and the fullness of the product).

American skirt for girls with a ribbon without a cut

To make a model of this type you will need:

  • a piece of satin for a yoke 20 cm wide and a length corresponding to the child’s waist circumference (F), multiplied by 4;
  • a piece of fabric for the first tier of a skirt, 12 cm wide and 6-9 cm long;
  • material for the second tier with a width of 12 cm and a length equal to multiplied by 18-24 From;
  • ruffles 5-6 cm wide and 36-45 cm long;
  • wide elastic band for the belt and satin ribbons for the bow.

To make a yoke , you need to fold the prepared piece of satin in half and sew it into a ring, leaving a hole in the center for the elastic. Then you need to thread an elastic band into the hole, stitch, sew on satin ribbons and a bow, and stitch again.

The material
for the first tier must be sewn into a circle and gathered along the upper edge to dimensions 2 From.
Then sew it to the bottom edge of the yoke. The material for the second tier must also be sewn in a circle and gathered to sizes 6-8 Ot. Then sew it to the bottom edge of the first tier.

Ruffles need to be sewn in a circle and form a gather to sizes 18-24 From . Then sew them to the bottom edge of the second tier.

After this, you need to sew the second skirt in the same way and sew it under the first to the bottom edge of the yoke.

Tutu skirt made of tulle (weaving without cut)

To make such a product, you will need a wide elastic band (about 1.5 cm wide) and tulle (organza can be used instead of tulle).

Technique:

  1. First, you should measure the child’s waist and cut off the length obtained from the elastic band minus 2.5 - 5 cm. This will be the belt for the skirt.
  2. The ends of the elastic must be connected, overlapping each other by approximately 0.5 - 0.8 cm, and then sewn.
  3. To determine how much tulle is required, you should measure the distance from the belt to the desired length of the product, then multiply this result by 2 and additionally add 2.5 cm. If you have a solid piece of tulle, you need to cut it into strips about 7.5 cm wide .
  4. The elastic band for the belt must be secured to the back of the chair. A strip of fabric should be folded in half, threaded under the elastic band and, pulling the ends of the strip into the loop formed on top, tied with a loop knot around the belt. If you want your skirt to be as full as possible, it is better to tie the elastic stripes with a regular double knot.
  5. Having made 4-5 such knots, you should squeeze them tightly and move them towards each other. Then you need to secure other strips of fabric to the elastic, arranging them in the same way. The elastic band should eventually be completely closed.

The finished product can be decorated with various elements according to personal preferences.

Tutu skirt for girls with elastic band

This is one of the varieties of tutu skirt. The splendor of such a product depends on the width of the selected elastic. To make such a skirt, you need to prepare 5 m of tulle, 1 m of lining fabric, 25 cm of thick knitwear and 1 m of wide elastic.

Technique:

  1. Cut the tulle into 10 equal pieces 50 cm long.
  2. Insert a special foot for ruffles into the sewing machine (if you don’t have one, you can set the stitch length a little longer than usual).
  3. Fold the tulle in half and stitch along the top edge. Gradually connect the pieces of fabric together.
  4. The resulting seam does not need to be secured. You should carefully pull the thread at the ends to gather the product, the width of which must be calculated so that it matches the child’s waist circumference (with an addition of 3-5 cm).
  5. Sew the edges of the fabric several times to secure the circle.
  6. Cut a piece of fabric for the lining that is a few cm shorter than the length of the skirt (taking into account seam allowances).
  7. Sew the lining fabric along the side line and gather the top using the above method.
  8. Sew the lining to the tulle piece.
  9. Cut out two strips from thick knitwear, equal in width to half the waist circumference with an addition of 10 cm. These are blanks for the belt.
  10. Sew the short sides of the strips at a distance of 5 mm from the edge. Leave a hole for an elastic band on one side of the part made in this way.
  11. The resulting circle needs to be folded in half with the inside out and ironed. The belt is ready.
  12. Sew the belt to the top of the skirt. The hole for the elastic should be located high from the edge of the tulle.
  13. Fold the waistband along the ironed line and sew the second edge with a zigzag stitch. Insert an elastic band into the belt that matches the child’s waist size.

Adult Long Tutu Skirt

To make such a product you will need: tulle, light fabric for lining (for example, satin) and a thick elastic band for the belt.

Technique:

It is necessary to cut out a “sun” skirt. To make the appropriate pattern, you only need 2 measurements: the desired length of the product and the waist circumference.

Measurements and calculations

To understand how much tulle is needed to sew a product, you should make some calculations and measurements. Much depends on the chosen model. If a craftswoman plans to sew a rectangular-cut tulle skirt with her own hands, she needs to know the length of the product. For example, for a pack 60 cm long, you will need a piece of material 3 m wide. The length of the fabric is 2.40 m (the length of the item multiplied by 4). This fabric will make 4 layers of 3 meters each, or 2 layers of 6 meters. Both options will be quite lush. But if the waist circumference is more than 75 cm, then in order to get a pronounced gather and tails, it is better to take layers of 6 meters.

If the fabric is thin and very see-through, it is worth adding a petticoat in the same color. The material should be smooth, giving a beautiful drapery. To add extra airiness, you can use thick fabric for the petticoat. If, on the contrary, the volume is required to be minimal, the material should be soft. With a fabric width of 1.5 m, you will need a cut whose length is 5 cm less than the length of the skirt.

A petticoat is needed in products made of very thin material with a small number of layers. It also serves to ensure that the edge of the hard tulle does not cling to the tights. It is calculated and cut in the same way as for a pack.

For a shopenka consisting of several layers cut in a “sun” pattern, the calculation of tulle depends on the number of layers and the length of the product. To cut out one of the elements, you will need a square, the side of which is calculated using the formula: (length of the item + waist circumference, divided by 6.3) x 2. Thus, with a waist circumference of 70 cm and a skirt length of 60 cm, for 1 layer you need a cut with a side (60+70/6.3) x 2, that is, approximately 142 cm.

If you plan to make your own tulle skirt with an elastic band that is worn through the bottom, then you need to take into account the girth of the hips, not the waist. That is, for a shopenka 60 cm long, consisting of 4 layers, you will need 3 m of fabric with a width of 3 m, and for six layers - already 4.5 meters. To make this model gather at the waist, you need to either increase the waist circumference, or use a “double sun” cut, when the resulting parts are cut and sewn in pairs.

To sew a fluffy three-tiered skirt with large frills, you will need 4.5 meters of tulle and fabric for the base, the length of which is 5 cm shorter than the length of the product.

To make a children's tutu skirt without sewing, you need to take strips of tulle 15-20 cm wide. The number of parts is equal to the waist circumference in centimeters. You can take a little more to increase the pomp and reduce transparency. The length of the strips is equal to twice the width of the product. To calculate how much tulle is needed for a thing, you should count the number of vertical elements. For example, for a tutu skirt 30 cm long with a fabric width of 3 meters, you will need a 3 meter long piece. This piece will make 75 strips measuring 60 x 20 cm.

Decor

A similar skirt can be decorated with various decorative elements. For example, sew down a wide satin ribbon that matches the color of the main material or a contrasting shade. Stitches during the sewing process must be made in the middle of the tape.

The hem can be designed in the form of beautiful waves. To do this, you need to sew a fishing line of medium diameter there in a zigzag. It is recommended to use mode 2 or 3 of the sewing machine for this purpose. In order for the fishing line to hold well, its size must correspond to the size of the stitches.

To make the “American” even more original, you can sew a soft tulle train to the back of the belt. In addition, you can decorate such a product with flounces, frills, braid, beads, bows, flowers, rhinestones and other decorative elements.

A light material such as tulle or organza, designed in the form of a fluffy tutu skirt, will create a romantic look. Little ones will look great in this outfit at any children's party. Adult representatives of the fair sex can wear such skirts under new-look dresses, combine them with leggings, and even wear them in the office in combination with a blazer.

Decorating the product

Weightless tulle items look elegant in themselves, so for everyday wear you don’t need to add decorations. But if they are intended for a holiday, then there are several ways to decorate the products to give them shine and showiness. The belt can be decorated with a wide satin ribbon, which is tied at the back or side with a lush bow. The latter can be replaced with an artificial flower or brooch. All these decorations can be used without a satin belt.

The hem is also decorated with ribbon or trim to emphasize the volume. You can insert fishing line inside the fabric to create beautiful folds along the edge. If desired, the hem is embroidered with beads, seed beads, sequins, and decorated with decorative embroidery. Children's skirts are complemented with beautiful buttons, bows, pompoms, and lace.

We sew a tulle tutu skirt without a machine

DIY tulle tutu skirt in a couple of hours?!

Easily! Catch a new master class on making a chic tulle skirt! Without a sewing machine, we will sew by hand!

Such skirts are called by many names: tutu skirt, tutu skirt, marshmallow skirt. They have become very popular among modern fashionistas for their volume, airy lightness and incredible combination: with sneakers and a leather jacket you create an incredible rocker combination with a touch of tenderness, and with heels and a silk blouse - even for the red carpet! Of course, for our simplified version we will need leggings, bicycle shorts or a basic skirt, but we can follow the link to my previous master class and sew ourselves a whole basic set, for example, in beige color for translucent things! But an ultra-fashionable handmade item will appear in your wardrobe! However, I finish with an introductory word and move on to the description. ⠀ We will need:

  • Soft tulle, consumption is calculated using the formula:

(Waist circumference: 4+1): 3 x Two skirt lengths For example, I have a waist of 68 cm, I want a midi skirt length of 70 cm, then: (68: 4 + 1): 3x140 = 840, that is, I need 8.4 m of tulle . Don’t be alarmed, regular tulle is an inexpensive fabric, but industrial tutu skirts require up to 30 m of tulle!

Also, as an example, I give the calculation of fabric consumption for a girl 110 cm tall (length from the waist 30 cm) and with a waist circumference of 50 cm: (50: 4 + 1): 3x60 = 260, that is, 2.6 m of tulle.

  • Elastic band 5 cm wide, length = waist circumference, thread to match the fabric, scissors, needle.

1. We make a belt from an elastic band: cut off the length = waist circumference, fold it into a ring and sew it together. No allowance is needed, the elastic stretches and fits perfectly at the waist.

2. Cut the tulle into strips: width = 50 cm, length = two lengths of the skirt (mine is 140 cm). Number of stripes=Waist:4+1. I have 68:4+1=18 bands.

3. We put the belt on the mannequin/girlfriend/husband/chair back, take the strip and thread it strictly in half through the belt as in the photo. Carefully gather the strip to a width of about 4cm.

4. Using strictly matching threads and a thinner needle, we sew the strip under the belt with three or four dot stitches, that is, we will have almost invisible dot stitches from the face. We fasten the thread at the back with a pair of knots. We continue to sew all the stripes in a circle in the same way.

5. At the end, when the space on the belt runs out and there is one more strip left, we slightly move all the strips close to each other and sew the last strip onto the resulting space. And, you won’t believe it, the skirt is ready!

How to make without sewing

A funny and interesting DIY tutu-style skirt is made from strips of tulle fastened with an elastic band without sewing. This item is suitable for a girl or a teenage girl. Sequencing:

  1. To calculate the amount of fabric for a tutu skirt, measure your waist. You will need as many strips of tulle as there are centimeters. The size of the rectangular strip is 20 cm and double the length of the skirt. You can take several different colors of fabric.
  2. We sew an elastic band suitable for the waist circumference into a ring and stretch it over the back of the chair.
  3. We bend each strip of fabric in half and tie it with a loop knot to an elastic band. It is important not to overtighten the latter so that the product remains level. To secure the stripes without excess bulk, you can use a hat elastic, using it to secure the tulle using the back-needle stitch method.

After all the strips are tied, we collect their ends into a bun and trim the hem. The belt can be decorated with a ribbon, wrapping it around an elastic band with knots.

Cut the tulle into 40-50 strips. Wrap the strips around the formed elastic band.

Ready product

Easy way

Tulle fabric is a thin mesh of synthetic fibers. It is produced in rolls of the usual width of 1.5-3 m and sold by the meter, like other types of fabrics. There is also tulle in bobbins made in the USA.

Its width is 15 cm. To make a tulle tutu skirt, it is best to purchase just this one to simplify the work. If there is no material, you will have to manually cut the canvas into separate strips.

For a tutu skirt, girls will need:

  • rubber;
  • satin ribbon;
  • tulle in bobbins, you can take several different shades;
  • scissors;
  • ruler or template.

You can calculate the amount of material by measuring the child’s waist circumference and the length of the finished product. The last measurement must be multiplied by 2 to get the length of 1 piece of matter. The number of segments can be equal to the number of centimeters of waist circumference. In this case, the tutu will turn out very lush and beautiful. The length of the elastic band is calculated to be 2/3 of the waist circumference.

Sections of individual pieces of tulle can be made at an angle, in this case you will get protruding sharp edges of the finished skirt. With an even cut, the bundle will have a softer texture.

Assembly is carried out in the following order:

  1. Bend a piece of tulle in half. Place the fold around the elastic band stretched over the mannequin.
  2. Thread the free ends of the fabric into the loop formed from the fold of the fabric. Tighten the resulting knot not too tightly so that it can be moved along the elastic band.
  3. In the same way, attach 3-4 more parts. Move them tightly together and make another 4-5 knots, moving them too. Continue until the entire elastic band is filled with tulle ribbons.

The fluffy skirt for the girl is ready. It is held at the waist with an elastic band, but can be accessorized with a belt and bow. For the belt, fold a wide satin ribbon in half lengthwise and iron it. The length should be such that after sewing there will be long ends for the bow. Sew the ribbon, starting from its middle, like a belt to a skirt, covering the top edge of the product.

Elegant tutu with satin trim

The version of this tulle skirt for girls will require more complex work and the presence of a machine. Cut strips from bobbin tulle. For finishing, choose a narrow satin ribbon to match and cut it into pieces 15 cm long. The number of pieces should be 2 times greater than the number of pieces of the veil. Burn the ribbon sections.

Stitch the satin to both ends of the veil strips, matching the edges and leaving long thread ends. When everything is finished, join the edges of each satin ribbon into a ring, tying the remaining ends of the thread. Then proceed in the same way as in the previous option. Use a checkerboard elastic band 5 cm wide, then the tulle tulle can be made in several tiers. To do this, the veil ribbons are attached one above the other, threading them through the holes of the elastic band. You can complement the outfit with a corsage made of a wide elastic ribbon. If you make the product longer and attach veil straps to the elastic band, then a children's tutu skirt can look like a chic sundress, which is tied with a belt at the waist.

Processing secrets

Tulle is sewn with a zig-zag seam: stitch length 2 mm, width 1.5. There is no need to process the bottom - it does not crumble.

Each panel is assembled separately. Departing 0.7 cm from the top cut, machine stitching is done, setting the largest stitch pitch. Then lay a second line - 1 cm below the first. Leave long ends of the threads, which are carefully pulled together.

DIY tutu skirt

There are several ways to make a tutu skirt with your own hands. Based on your experience in needlework, you can do it in a simple way with virtually no sewing, or you can make a more labor-intensive multi-tiered product such as a tutu with a train.

Whether it’s just an “American” or a tutu skirt, they are all made from translucent, airy fabric that holds its shape and does not wrinkle. Either light mesh fabric - tulle or organza - will suit you. The advantage of these materials is that the cut does not “crumble”, i.e. the edges can be left without additional processing. The result will look very light and airy. However, the raw edge of tulle has a big disadvantage - it can cling, and the “layers” will get tangled together. If you decide to process the hem without using decorative elements, it is better to sew with zigzag seams; they are less noticeable due to the mesh structure of the fabric.

Features of tulle

Tulle can be recognized by its mesh structure. This fabric, usually synthetic, is lightweight, translucent and durable. Materials of this type can have different densities, plain or shiny texture. They do not fray when cutting the edges, even without hemming, and can be easily decorated with embroidery, sequins and appliqués. All this makes tulle ideal for DIY tutu skirts. You can make something from this fabric without any special preparation, using the simplest means at hand.

Method without cutting

So what you need:

  • wide, dense elastic band for the belt, at least 5 cm. The length is slightly larger than the waist, about 2 cm, so that it can be easily removed from the hip.
  • material. For a girl with a waist size of 60-70 cm, you will need 12-15 m of fabric. A little girl will need from 2 to 6 m.

Operating procedure

  1. First we decide how long the product we need. We multiply the resulting figure by 2 and add another 2 cm to the result.
  2. We cut strips of fabric 5-10 cm wide and the length determined above.
  3. We sew the ends of the future belt.
  4. We bend the ribbons in half. We tie them with an elastic band. In this case, the knots do not need to be tightened too much - the base will twist unsightly, and we also make sure that the edges of the strips after tying are at the same level.
  5. We continue tying until the entire space is covered with fabric. The more stripes, the more magnificent the “American” will be!

You can tie the ribbons yourself with a knot, or you can tie them with braid, emphasizing the waist line: the strip is thrown over an elastic band, and instead of a knot, it is tied with braid, which should form one line on the finished product.

This is how easy it is to make a beautiful tutu for a girl with your own hands. It can be decorated with satin ribbons and rhinestones. Such skirts are worn either with an opaque petticoat or with tight tights or leggings.

Petti skirt

Needed for sewing

  • half a meter of non-woven fabric;
  • three meters of chiffon with a width of one and a half meters;
  • half a meter of satin for the upper part;
  • five meters of tulle for ruffles;
  • elastic band (length according to waist size);
  • silk ribbon along the length of the elastic, taking into account the seam allowance.

ABC of terms

  • yoke - the top of the skirt, where an elastic band with a ribbon is attached at the waist, and fabric to the bottom;
  • tier - the lower part of the skirt, we attach frills to it;
  • ruffle - the basis of the skirt, made of tulle 11 cm wide.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Cut the tulle into rectangular strips 7-10 cm wide.
  2. We also cut the chiffon into tiers 11 cm wide.
  3. Using a zig-zag machine stitch, we process the loose edge of the chiffon parts.
  4. On the narrow side we connect the rectangles into a ring.
  5. We sew the tulle on a machine using a “basting” stitch to collect the ruffles.
  6. Sew the chiffon piece with frills.
  7. Using a pre-prepared pattern, we cut out a yoke from satin, sew the sides and duplicate it on the wrong side with non-woven fabric for rigidity. If you don’t have a pattern, you can mark it using a ready-made skirt that fits you perfectly. Don't forget to add seam allowances.
  8. Attach the belt and silk ribbon.
  9. We combine a yoke and a fluffy skirt.
  10. Let's try on the finished product.

Sewing method requiring cutting

In this case, “sun”, “half-sun”, and also rectangle cut models can be used. It is important to note that tulle is an excellent material for cutting on the bias; it retains its shape due to its lightness.

  • elastic for a belt from 5 cm wide, taking into account that the finished product can be easily removed through the bottom.
  • tulle or other suitable fabric. We calculate the amount of material. You need to know the length of the finished product and find the waist radius. Add 5 cm to the first number. Measure your waist, divide by 3.14, multiply the resulting number by 2. Add both values. If the result is less than 27, 6 m of tulle is sufficient, with a width of 1.7 m. If it is more than 27, then 10-12 m will be required.

Operating procedure

  1. We fold the material in several layers.
  2. The number of layers corresponds to the number of “suns” cut out. If the cut blanks are the same, then the entire “chopinka” will look like a single whole with beautiful coattails at the bottom.
  3. Or you can make them different: the longest is the bottom layer, the shortest is the top. In this case, you will get a fluffy, flowing tutu skirt with your own hands.
  4. We make a lining of opaque fabric, which in width corresponds to the circumference of the hips and can be a simple rectangle sewn in a circle. It should be 5 - 10 cm shorter than the main skirt. We grind the edges. The petticoat simply gathers with an elastic band.
  5. The ends of the wide elastic band - sew the belts.
  6. All pieces are gathered along the waist line using a needle and thread until soft folds are formed. Then they are sewn to the belt.
  7. We sew the resulting structure to the lining.
  8. Using satin ribbons we decorate the belt.

Sewing from rectangles will differ only in the pattern, where instead of “suns”, rectangles are cut from tulle. In this case, the height is equal to the length of the intended product, and the width is equal to how full the skirt you want.

Decorating the product

A tulle tutu can be decorated at the bottom with a wide satin ribbon to match the main color, darker, lighter, or a contrasting shade. When sewing, the stitches should run in the middle of the tape.

Beautiful waves along the hem are obtained using a medium-diameter fishing line, which is sewn in a zigzag, sewing machine mode 2 or 3. It is important here that the size of the stitches matches the size of the fishing line and holds it. In this way, the effect of large waves or small “lamb” is achieved.

An original addition to the “American” is the train. It is used either as a separate wardrobe item: for this purpose it is tied under the base. Or it is part of the whole, if the train is attached to the belt.

  • Only soft tulle is used.
  • Strips of different sizes are cut out, which depends only on your desire.
  • The stripes are gathered.
  • First, long strips are sewn onto a satin ribbon or other belt, then in descending order to the shortest.

As impressive as a tutu skirt is when creating an image, it is so easy to make.

Make an exclusive model for your own wardrobe that will emphasize your femininity, as well as good taste and sense of style.

The main stages of making a shopinka

This skirt is based on rectangle, half-sun, sun and double-sun cuts. The most luxurious item made from this material will be in the latter case, and this will also help to avoid excess volume at the waist. How to sew a tulle shop skirt 60 cm long with your own hands - beginning needlewomen should learn about this.

To make this model, you need to know the length of the product and waist circumference. You will need to cut out 4 layers of material, each of which consists of two sun circles. Fabric consumption for this model: a piece of tulle 6 x 3 meters, a piece of material for the lining measuring 1.45 x 1.45 m. In addition, you need to prepare a double coat for the belt, sewing accessories, pins, and a zipper.

Creating patterns and cutting tulle

First of all, a semicircle pattern is made. To do this, two radii are laid out on paper (wallpaper will do) from one point. The first is equal to the waist circumference divided by 6.3. With a waist circumference of 70 cm, the radius will be equal to 12 cm. The second radius is equal to the first + skirt length + 3 cm for seams and hems. In our case, it will look like this: 12 + 60 + 3 = 75. The result will be a semicircle with a diameter of 150 cm.

After this, the tulle is divided into 8 equal squares measuring 1.5 x 1.5 m. Each of the elements must be folded in half and, using a pattern, cut out a circle with a hole inside. If the size of the fabric does not allow you to cut out each piece from a square, you need a more economical layout. For such a case, there is a chess pattern principle:

  1. We fold the material in half lengthwise, aligning the edges.
  2. The semicircle is applied with the flat side to the fold, and the outline is outlined. After cutting, you will get a solid semicircle.
  3. Then the pattern is shifted and transferred with the flat side to the opposite side, without bending.
  4. Here you will get two half-suns that will need to be sewn together. The pattern is shifted and turned over until all layers are cut out.

You can move not the pattern, but the fabric, after gluing the pattern to the floor with tape. Through the transparent tulle its contours will be clearly visible.

Next you need to do the following:

  1. Cut each circle in one place along the radius.
  2. Cut a circle from the lining fabric in the same way as from tulle, 5 cm shorter.
  3. Cut out a belt with a length equal to your waist circumference and a width of 8 cm.
  4. Glue it with double tape. If you plan to replace the belt with an elastic band, then you do not need to cut out this part. In this case, you should prepare an elastic band, the length of which is equal to the waist circumference minus 2 cm.

In the case when the “sun” cut is taken as the basis, additional volume can be added to the shoppenka by increasing the size of the waist opening. Each layer in such a skirt can have its own gather factor due to different diameters of the waist opening. The thickest gathering is done on the top layer of tulle, while the bottom layer remains unchanged.

Opening radii for a skirt consisting of a different number of layers for a waist of 70 cm:

  1. The bottom (first) layer is coefficient 1, that is, radius = waist circumference /6.3, approximately 11.5 cm.
  2. The top layer is a coefficient of 1.5, which is considered the base layer for the assembly. The radius of the hole will be 70 x 1.5/6.3, that is, approximately 17 cm.
  3. If there are 3 layers, then the middle one can be taken with a coefficient of 1.25. This will be 14 cm.
  4. If there are 4 layers, the coefficients can be taken, for example, 1; 1.2; 1.4; 1.6. It depends on how full the skirt is needed.

In the fabric departments you can find tulle with decorative elements. This will significantly save time, since you will not need to think about how to decorate the product.

Pattern

The fabric needs to be folded. The fabric for the lining needs to be cut according to the width of the hips.

Product assembly

First of all, you need to combine two cut circles and sew them along one side seam. You will get 4 double suns. Two of them are combined along the waist section and pinned together. Along the top of each of the two resulting parts, 2 parallel machine lines are laid with a loose thread and a large stitch.

Then you can start assembling:

  1. By pulling the threads on one side of the stitches, we gather the parts so that their length is equal to the waist circumference. Baste and sew both parts together along the waist line.
  2. We cut the circle of lining fabric along the radius, place it under all layers of tulle, baste it and sew it at the waist. We remove all the basting lines.
  3. We place the belt with the front side on the front side of the skirt and sew along the waist line.
  4. We sew all the layers along the side sections using an overlocker to make it easier to sew in a zipper.
  5. Using pins, pin the zipper to the side seam so that its upper teeth reach the middle of the waistband.
  6. We bend the belt to the wrong side, baste it and attach it to the skirt, bending the edge.

At the very end, sew the side seam below the zipper. We process the bottom of the lining with an overlock or hem stitch with a closed cut. The four-layer tulle shopinka skirt is ready.
