In order to master a simple technique for creating soft toys from socks, it will be enough to carefully study the photo or video master classes given in this article.

General principles for making toys from sock

Of course, not everyone is a super fashion designer or seamstress, and creating a test toy will require a lot of effort, so you should adhere to the following principles:

  1. Sock selection . It is better to take a sock made from natural fabrics; it will not stretch too much and lose its shape. You can try making your first toy from socks that have already been used 1-2 times, after washing them first. If suddenly the toy doesn’t work out, you won’t mind throwing it away;
  2. Thickness of the sock fabric . Choose a thin fabric so that it is convenient to pierce with a needle and stitch it;
  3. Filler it should be convenient to use, it is better to choose cotton wool, padding polyester or leftover pieces of fabric (knitting thread) for the first time;

  4. Color selection . To start working with socks, choose plain socks, this will make it easier to model the shape of the craft;
  5. Tools should be chosen that are convenient.

There are only 5 principles that will help a child or parent create the best toy - with their own hands.

Fabrics, their features and methods of working with socks

In stores and on shelves you can find socks made of completely different materials. Several types are popular on the market:

  • cotton;
  • linen;
  • bamboo;
  • wool;
  • half-woolen;
  • polyamide;
  • angora;
  • nylon;
  • rabbit fluff.

Not everyone is suitable for creativity, so it’s worth highlighting several options.

Cotton fabric is made from natural materials and occupies one of the leading positions, being a favorite of many buyers.

Cotton is lightweight and thermoregulatory. This is a breathable material that allows moisture to pass through well. After washing, the products do not hold their shape well, but all the disadvantages are compensated by the cheap price.

Linen, like cotton, perfectly absorbs moisture and is a natural material. In addition, this fabric has a high level of thermal conductivity. An undoubted advantage will be their hypoallergenicity. The material will not cause irritation or allergic reactions even in the most sensitive skin.

In addition, linen is a very hygienic material, so it is perfect for children's toys.

The downside is that linen fabric wrinkles easily and quickly, and also shrinks.

Wool and wool mixture. These products are very similar, but, of course, they have differences. Wool has a warming effect and retains heat well, but can cause irritation to delicate skin.

Wool-blend products also contain additional threads - usually acrylic. Thanks to this, they become softer, do not shrink and have good strength.

Required materials and tools

DIY socks toys are created using different materials. The master classes presented below will help in the implementation of any idea.

The main tools that may be needed include:

  1. Scissors – small and large. Small ones with thin edges are easy to cut out corners and small patterns, large ones are easier to make even cuts from the toe;
  2. Threads - choose to match the tone of the toy, #40 will be enough. You can make additional decor from thick, contrasting thread and sew it onto the seams;
  3. Needle – small thin and large. Small, convenient to sew kinks and corners;

  4. Material for stuffing the toy : cotton wool, padding polyester, fluff, foam rubber, leftover fabric (knitting thread), sand, cereal, beads, sawdust. The choice of material depends on the wishes of the performer.
  5. Decor – choose a nose, eyes, bows, twigs, flowers for the toy;
  6. Glue gun.

Having prepared all the materials and stocked up with ideas, choose a convenient place and start making crafts.

Snowman

The sock snowman craft is made on the same principle as the bunny. The only exception is that you don't need to sew anything. This product can be made together with children starting from the age of three.

We will need: a white sock, rice, thick white thread, a glue gun, buttons or beads, a ribbon or a contrasting piece of fabric for a scarf.

How can you decorate a toy?

Creating a toy and adding zest to it using various decorative means is not an easy task, because it is difficult to choose just one from a wide variety of ideas. For example, you can add hair, flowers, a hat, a cap, a ball, a bow, and earrings to a toy. Or make a backpack out of it by sewing 2 ribbons. As an addition to the toy there will be a costume made for it.

You can trim the craft with beads or ribbons or contrasting threads.

Materials needed for decoration:

  1. Multi-colored threads, ribbons;
  2. Paints;
  3. Fur;
  4. Beads, sequins, beads, rhinestones, stones;
  5. Fabrics;
  6. Buttons;
  7. Figures of eyes, ears, lips, nose;
  8. Pompoms;
  9. Floral nets;
  10. Foam tubes, multi-colored.

You can choose material for a handmade toy at any fabric store.

Cut up a tennis ball and hide your dog's favorite treat in it.

The treat can be hidden not only in a plastic bottle, but also in an old tennis ball. Cut it with a knife, making a small hole measuring 5-7 cm. Fill the ball with small pieces of your dog's favorite treat. Then give the finished toy to your pet. Not all animals immediately understand where the tasty smell is coming from and how to extract it from the ball. In this case, the owner must show the dog how to get it.

Master class on making a snowman from a sock

DIY sock toys (master class) are often made in the shape of snowmen. For the first work, it is better to use the simplest idea. The Snowman toy can be entrusted to be sewn by a 5-6 year old child, under the supervision and help of parents.

The snowman is white - therefore, take a white sock, white threads, buttons, eyes. You will also need a piece of fabric or a red or orange sock (nose), scissors, glue, a smaller colored sock (hat), filler (sand). If you need a large snowman, then choose a sock size 52 or larger.

Performance :

  1. Divide the sock into two parts, cutting off the part with the heel at a right angle with the elastic of the sock;
  2. Iron the second part a little with a warm iron;
  3. By eye, outline 2-3 parts of the snowman, if desired. It’s better in 2 parts, so it will look more voluminous;
  4. Fill the sock with sand to approximately the middle and tie it tightly with white thread, first shaping it into a ball;
  5. Fill the upper part with sand so that it is smaller than the lower part (this is the head);
  6. Sew the upper part with thread, twist and tie the tip, as after the body. It turned out that the tail was sticking out;
  7. Fold the red fabric in half and draw a triangle at the bend with a pencil. Cut without cutting the fold of the fabric. Sew 2 edges with red thread, stuff with light filler (cotton wool);
  8. Sew the nose to the snowman, bending the edges inward so that the cuts are not visible. Or you can immediately sew the nose and then sew it to the snowman;
  9. Glue the eyes, sew 2 buttons on the body, sew the mouth with red thread;
  10. For the hat you need a smaller colored sock; cut off the top part with the elastic band. The side of the elastic band will be worn on the head. So, sew the lower part of the cut with a suitable thread and make a pom-pom. Put it on the snowman's head. Instead of a hat, you can buy a small bucket in a souvenir shop and glue it on with a glue gun;
  11. Make a scarf from a red ribbon or knit a braid from red knitting threads and tie it around the snowman’s neck.

Snowman is ready! Joy for the child and the development of fine motor skills, plus additional time spent next to the mother. In general, there are only advantages and pleasure. • You need to stuff the “filling” not in large parts, but in small pieces.
  • Constantly massage to thicken and shape.

  • Any color variations are acceptable.
  • The contours of the parts are applied to the wrong side.

This craft can be a good design for a gift for dad or grandfather. Apart from imagination, little is required for it, and the original shape will make it possible to please a loved one even with classic socks.

Let's start assembling the tank.

  1. Take several pairs of black socks, roll them up and secure them with elastic bands.
  2. Lay one red sock flat, heel up. Place black ones on it and wrap the structure with a red scarf. To prevent the composition from falling apart, you can fasten it together with paper clips.
  3. Use the second red sock to make a tank turret. Place it on top of the “caterpillars” and tie it with ribbon.
  4. For example, stick in a beautiful (expensive) pen as a barrel.

The gift is ready. This is the “light” option. If you want to give a larger item, increase the base proportionally (10 pairs of black socks will also come in handy). It will no longer be possible to place a small hand on it, but a bottle of good wine or any other item. The main thing is that it has a cylindrical shape and resembles a cannon.

We have not presented all possible crafts made from socks. There are also options such as snowmen, dogs, dolls, and chickens. The basic working techniques are described above, so by safely combining them, you can invent and make a craft, even without detailed instructions, and you can find photos on the Internet.
