In all cases when you do not need to constantly carry your luggage on your back (then it is better to take a backpack), a good suitcase will become an indispensable assistant and companion. On a plane, on a trip, on a car trip or on a bus - a roomy and strong travel bag will allow you to put everything you need for your trip without getting wrinkled or broken. Unfortunately, even the most durable and sturdy suitcase can break down if used regularly. In particular, individual mechanisms may break. For example, the handle is broken and does not fold. What to do in such a situation? Is it possible to fix a suitcase handle yourself, or do you need to urgently rush to a repair shop?

First, decide for yourself whether the problem is worth the effort and expense. Or it's a sign that it's time to upgrade your travel accessory. If the latter, then it’s worth considering what the modern suitcase market offers, what advantages and features new models from various brands have.

But in many cases, repairing the handle of a suitcase on wheels with your own hands can be done quite quickly and without unnecessary difficulties. Minor repairs will not require any special skills or a large set of tools from you. Often you can deal with it right on the road. But keep in mind that the aesthetics of the bag will suffer greatly.

How to repair the telescopic handle of a suitcase in an emergency?

The best way to repair a suitcase is to take it to a workshop, where they will certainly put it back on its feet, or rather, on its wheels. But what if you need to repair the retractable handle of your suitcase urgently, right during your trip? And craftsmen sometimes charge so much for their work that this money would be enough to buy a simple replacement for a broken suitcase. If you are not too worried about the aesthetic appearance of the case, you will be able to repair it, even if you are very far from nuts and bolts. How exactly can this be done? It all depends on the degree of damage.

Assembling the swivel joint of the landing net

And now I would like to draw your attention to the assembly of the hinge connection of the sides of the folding landing net with a common rod, since this is the “rotten” place on the moving device.

Firstly: in the author’s landing net design, both side rods are similar, like twin brothers (see Figure 3, bottom position).

This means that if one of the side beams of the landing net is turned in a mirror image in relation to the other, then their areas ground for hinge joints will end up in the same plane and on the same side of the rods.

Therefore, at the ends of the common rod of the landing net, planes of exactly the same length must be formed, but on opposite sides. Although no one forbids you to figure out how to make them one-sided.

If the handle breaks on the road...

When the handle breaks right on the road, there is no talk about the beauty and durability of the repair. It is important to do everything quickly and relatively reliably: so much so that you don’t have to drag your suitcase in your hands to your destination. And a real pro of express repairs – tape – will help us do this.

So, the most common problem is a fracture of one of the tubes of the retractable handle. In terms of DIY repairs, the situation is very similar to applying a splint to a person with a fracture.

1. Find a rigid frame that will act as a tire. This may be a small metal pipe, but in the field you usually have to rely on a pencil, ruler or comb - the stronger, the better, of course.
2. An improvised splint is applied to the fracture site along the pipe.
3. Now the fracture site is wrapped with tape or tape along the entire length of the tire or at least 5-7 cm in each direction from the fracture.

Of course, it will be impossible to put the handle and tire back together, so if you still have to check your suitcase as luggage, limit yourself to simply wrapping the break in several layers of tape.

Not everyone takes adhesive tape or electrical tape with them on trips (but in vain!), so the short-sighted will have to try to replace this irreplaceable product with improvised means: a handkerchief, cling film from sandwiches, office clips, if they fit the size.

By the way, this method can be used even if the handle has broken in several places, practically crumbling. You’ll just have to find a slightly longer tire or increase their number, and you’ll need to wrap it with tape more securely.

Deciding on design and construction

Folding picnic tables come in a variety of styles and materials. Hence there are many design and construction options. You can make furniture entirely from wood (solid, chipboard or slats), light aluminum, plastic, combine plywood (tabletop) and metal (legs), etc.

It is much cheaper to make a folding structure with your own hands.

The shape of the tabletop can be round, square or rectangular. The picnic table is made on frames that can be easily folded or brought into the desired position during use.

In order to make a folding table for equipping a picnic area, you need to adjust all the parts to size.

The legs play a major role in this design. Correct calculation of the length and installation of fasteners will ensure the convenience of folding the table into a compact position and stability when unfolding.

How to fix a pen at home?

So you brought your broken suitcase home, and now you have enough time to slowly deal with the problem and try to repair the telescopic system yourself. Let's say right away: without experience in welding and polishing metal, it will not be possible to make the handle look like new, so all aesthetes will have to go to workshops. But if you only need functionality from a suitcase, you can improve the method of strengthening the break by replacing the tire with a pin.

• Unscrew the bolts of the telescopic structure and remove the broken part.
• Insert structural reinforcement into it in the form of a metal rod slightly smaller in width than the cavity itself.
• Secure the broken area with the same tape or tape.
• Secure the reinforced structure back with bolts.

If the fault allows, you don’t even have to unscrew the pipe from the telescopic holders, but it is important that the length of the pin is equal to the length of the handle itself, otherwise your reinforcement will dangle inside.

Another possible problem that you can solve yourself is unscrewing the bolts holding the structure and, as a result, the handle dangling from one or both sides. To repair it, it is enough to tighten these or put new bolts and nuts in place of the old ones, for which you need to get to the frame from the inside through the upholstery.

If it is not the telescopic handle that has unscrewed, but the stationary handle, you can also secure it with a bolt and nut, if it has not been mechanically damaged (not cracked or broken into pieces)

Choose suitcases with telescopic, stationary and side handles, so that if one or even two of them break, you have a backup transportation option.

Assembling a homemade folding landing net

After making the handle, you can start assembling the homemade folding landing net into a single whole.

The lower position of the drawing shows the configuration of the bends of the ends of the two side rods of the head of the fishing device and the location of the hinge pads on them.

You had to assemble them into a solid structure, joining them with hinged connections to the common central rod of the folding device, following my tips posted on the previous page of the topic. The dimensions of the rod common to the assembly are indicated in the middle position of the drawing.

If you carve the handle for your folding fishing landing net from birch with your own hands, then after fishing it will become non-separable, since the wood will stretch out in the tube.

Therefore, the landing net handle for fishing conditions should be made of bamboo or, in extreme cases, carved from coniferous trees. But if you have an old telescopic fishing rod lying around somewhere, then it is better to make a handle from it when assembling the landing net.

In addition, I would tie the diameter of the folding landing net handle to the internal diameter of the found tube (from 20 to 24 mm), and not vice versa. At the junction with the side bars of the frame, the tube should slide quite freely along the handle.

The length of the handle is 120-180 cm and depends on the fishing location (from a boat or from the shore).

For fishing from a boat, the handle of a folding landing net with a length of 120 cm will be clearly too long. I would shorten it in such a way that our homemade assembly would not sink under the influence of the buoyancy of the handle.

A quick way to wedge a handle

The second most common problem with telescopic systems after their fracture is jamming inside the suitcase. This is especially unpleasant if the suitcase is heavy: you won’t be able to carry it on wheels!

• To begin, feel inside the frame through the upholstery for the frame of the handle. Your task is to find holes with springs that secure it.
• Now you need to press these springs simultaneously: the handle will release and “shoot” out of the groove.

The opposite situation is also not uncommon: the handle refuses to fit back into the groove, and the suitcase must be checked in as luggage. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to solve this problem without disassembling the structure. In order not to completely break the structure during transportation, you can try to dismantle it completely with your own hands, tightening the bolts under the upholstery from the inside, or ask someone more experienced to do this for you. Then pack the pen in a suitcase, and wrap the suitcase itself with packaging film so that things don’t fall out through the hole and get dirty.

The telescopic handle and its quality are almost the main criterion when choosing a suitcase. Give preference to wide handles made of strong and thick metal, and then the likelihood of them breaking will be lower.

To avoid having to repair the telescopic handle, just roll the suitcase by it, and do not carry it, do not sit on the suitcase, and do not stuff it with heavy things under the maximum permissible weight. Preparing a folding landing net for fishing

Preparing a fully manufactured fishing folding landing net for fishing is very simple.

The free ends of the sides (2) are inserted into the grooves selected in the wooden handle (or glued in) and pressed with a cap brass or duralumin tube (3) (painted in red in the drawing of the handle) 50-60 mm long with an internal diameter of 24 mm.

The device is disassembled in the reverse order.

For transportation, the free ends of the rim, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise, are folded until aligned with the central rod and wrapped in mesh. In this unique assembly, a homemade folding landing net is prepared for transportation.

No belts? They can be replaced with rope. In this case, the repair system does not differ from the previous method. If there is no item nearby to replace the handle, then it can be made from the rope itself. To do this, you need to twist the string and wrap it with adhesive tape at the bottom, leaving a rope ring as an impromptu handle.

Damage to a telescopic handle for a suitcase or a retractable handle is difficult to eliminate in “field” conditions.

The easiest way is to purchase a new telescopic handle and replace the broken one with it. Of course, repairs can be made by contacting specialists, but this is quite an expensive pleasure. 3. Unscrew the same screws on top of the product, in the inner part (there can be up to 5 pieces).
4. Remove the handle from the top. Sometimes its upper part is attached to the suitcase with latches; they need to be disconnected using a screwdriver.
5. A replacement part is installed in place of the broken handle. Sometimes the mounting holes for the new handle are in a different place, and therefore you will have to carefully tighten the screws or bolts in the new places.
6. Fasten the lining.
7. Do-it-yourself repair of the telescopic handle is completed.

The algorithm for repairing a retractable suitcase handle with your own hands is as follows:

1. Unscrew the screws on the sides of the telescopic tubes to remove the handles.
2. Drill holes in the corners with a drill equal to the diameter of the screw or bolt used.
3. Drill through holes in the handle itself, in the places where the factory screws were.
4. Flush with the surface of the handle, you need to fuse, using a soldering iron, a screw with a screwed nut. Before doing this, widen the hole for the nut so that it fits in there with difficulty.

Punching should not be done from the side of the planes of the hinge areas, but from the side of the rounded surfaces of the rods and strictly in their middle. If you use drawing (3), then a distance of 14 mm from the rounded ends of the rods (with a length of hinge pads equal to 28 mm).

Next, the platform of one of the sides of the fishing landing net is combined with the platform of the common rod. At the edges of the overlap, both planes are pulled together by twisting copper wire, and a hole is drilled in one go in both rods. You saw the drawing on the previous page of the topic.

The same actions are performed with the other hinge joint of the fishing folding landing net. Then the holes on the outer sides are countersunk and rivets are placed for fastening.

If one of the fishermen may be hampered by the twisted wire when drilling holes, then slightly heat the pads over the flame of the burners and tack (spill) the grooves with solder with acid flux.

Then remove the twisted wires, drill holes, heat the soldering areas again over the burner flame, separate the landing net components, remove the remaining solder with a file, but keep in mind that aluminum alloys cannot be soldered with tin-lead solder.

3. In order to avoid relapse, it is recommended to simultaneously perform similar manipulations with the second corner.
4. In the handle itself you will need to make through holes with a diameter corresponding to the fastener.
5. Now screw the nut onto the screw and use a soldering iron to fuse it flush with the surface of the handle. The resulting melted plastic is removed with a blade or smoothed with a file.
6. The corners are fixed directly to the crossbar using pre-prepared screws and washers.
