A fishing box is a very useful, practical, and convenient thing. Initially, such boxes were created specifically for winter fishing, but later summer models appeared on sale, which have a number of advantages:
- increased number of departments, sections;
- large size;
- ease of use;
- stability on soft ground.
Many people use a fishing box for summer fishing as a seat. The top cover is finished with soft material. Especially for this purpose, the designers have equipped the boxes with convenient pull-out compartments that can be opened without getting up from the lid.
The main purpose of the boxes is to store the necessary equipment, including:
- bait;
- floats;
- bait;
- hooks;
- sinkers;
- coils;
- nozzles, etc.
The variety of summer boxes is unusually large. On the shelves of specialized stores you can find a wide variety of models, differing in size, shape, type of opening, number of compartments and other characteristics. The problem is that the cost of such boxes is sometimes very high. But there are several options for making summer fishing boxes with your own hands. We will look at the most popular models and talk in detail about manufacturing technology and assembly.
Overview of species
Today the range of boxes is quite wide. So, the following models are popular:
- with compartments for sandwiches, containers with tea and coffee;
- with small drawers for fishing tackle;
- with containers intended for bait, lures, baits;
- with a compartment in which the catch will be stored;
- with additional pockets for fishing rods.
Among fishermen who are keen on competing in their hobby, sports boxes are in great demand. Such models have a stylish design, most often weigh just over 2 kilograms, and are made of PVC.
Those who like to get to the fishing spot on foot like backpack boxes and bag boxes. The fishing accessory is placed in a container specially made for it, equipped with straps, and carried like a school backpack. The bag can be hung on the shoulder. This makes the unit easier to carry and extends its service life.
In addition, models of fishing boxes can be additionally equipped with skis. These skis will be a great help for fishermen who have to regularly drag all their equipment from place to place. Thanks to the skis, it will be easy to pull it through the snow.
Charabancs are made from different materials. Let's look at the features of each of them in more detail.
From foam
Foam boxes are incredibly popular. They are lightweight, but strong and wear-resistant. Such products serve as a kind of thermal bags, maintaining the internal temperature of the container for a long time. The fish will not spoil in them even if you are driving back from fishing in a hot car.
Foam units are also good because they are very comfortable. The models do not cool down in the cold, so it will be warm to sit on them. And the accessories are quite thick, and even if you try to damage them, they will not lose their original appearance. The only drawback is the price.
Made of metal
Aluminum metal boxes are durable and very wear-resistant units, popular since Soviet times. The models are easy to repair and easy to care for, and a fisherman who is used to working with his hands can even improve them by adding additional pockets, compartments and compartments.
However, along with undeniable advantages, there are also disadvantages. First of all, aluminum stainless steels are heavy. They will be difficult to transport on foot and move on ice. The second disadvantage is that such a box, of course, will be simply icy. To sit on it, you will have to additionally cover the lid with insulation. It is recommended to handle such a unit only with gloved hands.
Made of plastic
Such models are very budget-friendly and can be found in any fishing store. The main feature is the ability to use many additional accessories. For plastic containers you can choose pockets, various compartments for fish, food or bait, and gear.
The weak point of plastic models is their fragility. The material itself is quite fragile, over time it begins to wear out, which is why the latches on the drawer suffer. They constantly break down, and finding new ones takes time and money.
Speaking about manufacturing materials, one cannot fail to note the options for homemade containers, which fishermen often make at home. So, today the following solutions are known:
- from a bucket (metal or milk pan);
- from the freezer;
- from a gasoline can;
- from plywood;
- from the computer case.
An unchanging “grandfather’s” classic. Charabanc from the freezer
The advantages of this model: ease of manufacture, because having a freezer, the box is already 70% ready. Light weight and dimensions allow you to move freely on ice over long distances, without you feeling like a riding horse. Extremely convenient for actively fishing for pike perch in a reservoir.
Materials:
- Freezer
- Thin galvanized for internal partitions and drawer bottom
- A piece of plywood for the lid
- Insulation (foam or polyurethane foam)
- A piece of fabric to cover the lid with insulation
- Hinges
- Aluminum rivets
- Wide, dense elastic band for attaching gear under the lid
- Straps
Tools and manufacturing:
- Take a tape measure and measure the chamber to cut out the bottom from galvanized steel. It can be attached using aluminum rivets, of course, if you have a riveter (you don’t have to buy it, you can ask your friends for one time).
- You can fasten the internal sections to the same rivets; this is the most reliable and easiest way.
- Make a lid from a piece of plywood (2 cm thick).
- Then stuff it with insulation, previously wrapped in waterproof and durable material.
- You can install mounts for gear under the cover. Next, install the straps and clasp.
- Don't forget to insulate the box from the inside.
Tools you will need:
- jigsaw or saw
- riveter
- construction knife
- metal scissors
- wire cutters
Tip: A freezer drawer will cost you pennies if you borrow the missing tool. The freezer can be found at the metal collection point.
Summer fisherman's box from a canister
To make it yourself you will need:
- large and two small plastic canisters;
- two hinges for the box lid;
- aluminum corner;
- latches for fixing the lid in the closed position;
- rivets and screws.
We cut off the top part of a large canister, and an aluminum corner is attached to the cut along the perimeter with small bolts or rivets to increase the rigidity and strength of the structure. A plastic partition is made inside our fishing box.
The top cover, which also serves as a seat, is made of plastic or plywood, with a slight overlap over the edges of the box. The bottom and top of the lid are covered with a rubber bath mat. On one side, at the top of the product, two loops are attached, with which the lid is also fastened.
Pockets made from two small canisters are attached to the sides of the box, to which lids can also be attached
It is important to choose a wider and stronger belt for the box
Fishing box designs
Boxes with two or three internal compartments separated from each other by partitions are known. Everyone can use the compartments differently. But the original idea of the manufacturers was that models with two compartments would store catch and food for the fisherman, and models with three would also store gear.
Inside the compartments there may be separate sections for storing fishing equipment. The largest compartment of the box can store your catch.
Fishing boxes are designed for a load of 100 - 130 kg, i.e. can support the weight of a large sitting person. For ease of carrying on the shoulder there is a strap with adjustable length.

A fisherman is recognized from afar by his charabanc
The importance of a fishing box, or as it is also called - a charabanc, is difficult to overestimate. It is especially necessary for ice fishing. This piece of winter equipment is also used as a summer fishing box.
Just like in winter, in the warm season it provides the fisherman with maximum convenience and comfort. Charaban is a multifunctional thing. It will easily fit all the gear, especially since there is very little of it for winter fishing.
In the box you can put complementary foods, a thermos of tea and lunch, replacement gloves and warm mittens. Another important function of this item is to use it as a comfortable chair.
Drawing
If you are an engineer by profession, or at least remember a school or university course in engineering graphics and descriptive geometry, then making a drawing will not be difficult for you. If not, you will have a bit of a difficult time, although this is not a big problem.
The point of the drawing is to determine in advance exactly what dimensions each part/detail of the box should have, so that in the end they all smoothly and clearly come together into a single structure. Otherwise, there may be holes in the final product or, conversely, the box will turn out crooked and will not be durable. In general, if you want a good box, you need a good drawing.
There are three options for completing the drawing:
On the computer. If you know words like AutoCad, Compass or SolidWorks, you don't need to explain what to do. Just create a high-quality drawing and enjoy the beauty of the result of your work. For those who do not know, the above words are programs for engineering drawing, and they are so simple that a person who has never worked with them can master them in literally an hour. They are made in such a way that they can be understood purely intuitively.
On graph paper. In principle, you can even draw in a school notebook on squared paper, but you need to understand that in this case sufficient accuracy will not be ensured. Graph paper will allow you to calculate the length, height and width of parts down to a millimeter.
Sketch on paper
This method is suitable for those who do not pursue beauty and accuracy, for those for whom it is important not how good the box turns out, but simply that it turns out.
Rules for minor fishing rod repairs
- Inspect your rod regularly. If you notice small cracks, immediately cover them with furniture waterproof varnish.
- If the crack is deep enough, or a pressure mark has formed, use epoxy glue to repair the rod. After a day, go over the repair area with fine sandpaper.
- If the frame is not held securely in the bandage and is wobbly, rewind the ring.
- The fishing line often frays on the rings. To prevent this from happening, polish them with soft flannel.
- To prolong the life of the reel seat, you need to keep it clean. You can wipe it with a cotton pad soaked in an alcohol-containing solution. You can also treat the nuts and bolts to prevent them from rusting.
- The cork handle can be wiped with an alcohol solution, dried and rubbed with fine sandpaper. After this procedure, the pen will be like new.
- If a crack has formed on the foam rubber handle, it can also be sanded. But you need to choose the right grain size.
Industrial boxes
They are made by many manufacturers, for example, Aquatech, Pontoon 21, Plano, A-Elita, etc. All of them are involved in fishing tackle, but only the US company Plano is seriously involved in fishing boxes.
For more than half a century, Plano has been a world leader in the manufacture of boxes for carrying and storing fishing tackle. The entire range of its product models meets international quality standards.
- The cheapest box is Plano 1140. It is made of lightweight and safe plastic. Its fittings are made of stainless brass. The box has two compartments, with the bottom one being deeper. There is also a removable container.
- One of the best boxes is Plano 1363. It is made of the same plastic. However, it is larger than the previous one and has three retractable (organizer-type) boxes made of transparent plastic in front, closed with a durable door, as well as a compartment under the top cover with a handle.
More expensive models of Plano boxes are distinguished by wide functionality, contain numerous pull-out plastic compartments for storing various fishing accessories, and are also distinguished by excellent design and ease of use.
Features of selection and purpose
There are many areas of application for a fishing box. The main task is to store and transport all equipment to the fishing site: baits, baits, jigs, fishing rods and much more. It is also used as a catch storage point. Its design is such that it can serve as a comfortable seating area, eliminating the need to carry a stool with you. In search of a cool place, fishermen often go quite far, and every additional gram of luggage can always be unnecessary, so you need to take into account the weight of the box itself.
When choosing an option suitable for ice fishing, you also need to pay attention to the following properties:
Box volume. You need to put everything you need in it and leave room for the caught fish.
It is important to maintain a balance between the capacity and weight of the box. Practicality. In the cold it is not easy to remove a stuck accessory from the charabanc compartment. Strength
A fishing chest is subject to serious loads, given the weight of the fisherman in winter gear. Price. When purchasing a finished product, it is best to focus on a product in the mid-price category.
For those who prefer vertical lures, you don’t need a lot of gear: spoons, balancers, one or two fishing rods don’t take up much space. This is how they fish for perch or pike perch, covering a considerable distance when moving from one fishing point to another. This method of fishing involves getting up frequently to continue moving, so the box should be light, tall and small in size.
Having found a good place with frequent bites, jigs and floaters stay there for a long time. In addition to gear and other accessories, they have groundbait, different types of bait, a scoop for cleaning the hole and a tent that protects from the wind. Usually, a low rise with this method is more convenient, so the box should be voluminous and squat.
A capacious charabanc is needed by those who like to fish for predatory fish. The set consists of a dozen girders, a hook, a yawner, an extractor and various other equipment. Due to the length of the process, an extended supply of food and drinks is necessary. Fans of combined fishing need a box of medium height and dimensions.
Metal boxes are the most popular. This is especially true for duralumin products. They can withstand low temperatures, are strong and durable, and have an attractive appearance. However, this is the most expensive and rather heavy accessory.
In recent years, plastic boxes have gained a lot of fans. They attract buyers with their light weight and variety of colors, but cannot boast of strength and frost resistance.
The upper part of the seat must be covered with moisture-resistant soft materials. Manufacturers use foam rubber or polyurethane foam for this. The entire body must be covered with a thermal insulation coating.
Properly planning the interior space is no less important than choosing external characteristics. The presence of separate compartments for each type of accessories will allow you to quickly select the necessary gear
Fish stored in a separate compartment will not permeate sandwiches with its smell, and a thermos in a specially designated compartment will not be damaged by rolling around the box. A small window on the side will allow you to throw your catch inside without getting up.
An additional advantage will be convenient access for cleaning the fish compartment. The bottom surface of the lid should also not be empty. It can accommodate many compartments for all kinds of small items. If the gear is tightly packed and does not move chaotically when walking, then it will never get tangled.
Caring for spinning rods
Each rod should be washed with warm water and a cleaning agent.
After this, look at the rings and joints of the rods, if you wash them poorly, there will be particles of dirt; during the storage of the rod in winter, they will dry out and turn into something similar to powder, which, even with slight movement, will get into the knee. The mud will make itself felt already on the first fishing trip after wintering.
When you finish these procedures, pay attention to the cracks and chips on the surface of the fishing rod. The easiest way is to take your knee, point it at the lamp and look inside, from one end, then from the other
The flaws look like dark stripes.
Fishing rods with rings are examined for cracks exclusively from the outside; bright lighting should help. You can also detect a flaw with your palm, lightly pressing on your knee.
If you manage to find a crack, then repair is required. Scratches are an even more frequent “guest” on the rod. The degree of complexity of their elimination and the method depend on the depth.
If the depth is large, then the scratch will definitely loosen the knee, you need to use the most liquid type of glue. It is smeared onto the area of the flaw, the excess is removed with a piece of cloth.
We recommend “treating” small scratches by rubbing mastic into their places, although such “treatment” cannot be called particularly successful.
There is no point in covering a damaged fishing rod with a new portion of varnish and paint. You don’t know what kind of varnish was used in production, and you cannot be sure that the new layer will not dissolve the old one.
The next check point before storing your fishing rod is to check the rings. If you clearly see a flaw on the ring, it needs to be replaced. The ring is detached and a new one is installed in its place.
Material
When choosing a box for winter fishing, the material from which it is made is of no small importance. It must withstand low temperatures, resist water and snow, and cope with the weight of the angler
1. Different types of metals are most common in the manufacture of boxes. They are resistant to impacts in frosty weather, durable, and have an aesthetic appearance. The disadvantages of such models include heavy weight and high cost. 2. Plastic boxes have recently become popular among winter fishermen. They are lightweight and come in many different colors. However, at low temperatures, plastic becomes brittle. The slightest impact on a hard object or ice may cause the box to break. 3. Plywood and wooden structures can only be used in dry weather. But after each fishing it should still be dried, since over time the remaining moisture will destroy even treated wood. 4
Particular attention should be paid to the seat trim. Many manufacturers prudently make it from soft, moisture-resistant materials using insulation.
Foam rubber, polystyrene foam and construction foam have good thermal insulation. Please note: when using foam rubber or foam to make the seat, you must use moisture-resistant materials. They completely cover the thermal insulation material, which prevents moisture absorption and increases service life.
Origin
Obviously, these items owe their appearance to equipment for sport fishing. In conditions of limited time, participants could gain an additional advantage due to preliminary preparation.
Over time, summer boxes began to become increasingly widespread among fishing enthusiasts, and today they are very popular among them.
In competition conditions, when the duration of the round is limited to several hours, a short rest sitting on a box is quite enough. During recreational fishing, which is much longer, the lack of a backrest to lean on ends in back pain. For this reason, many anglers prefer a chair with a backrest to a box.
The second reason for this choice is the immersion of the legs in the ground. If the box rests stably on a wide bottom and side, then the chair rests on a small area of the plate.
In addition
We did not describe how to make additional containers in the charabanc, cut a hole in the box for storing fish, or attach straps and latches. The homemaker must decide on this choice himself, based on the materials of manufacture and the available accessories.
In addition, we did not describe attaching skis or any runners to the caravan for transportation. There is no description of production and a story about how to make a cover for a foam or polystyrene box.
Go for it, and your charabanc will take its rightful place among the best fishing crafts!
The best models
Balloons are indispensable for ice fishing, and many anglers strive to buy the best model. The top rating of trusted manufacturers that produce products of the best quality can help them in their choice.
Tramp TRA-152
A universal and high-quality box from a Chinese manufacturer. It can withstand 200 kg of weight, and the lid is covered with polyurethane foam, thanks to which it will be warm to sit on the unit. There is a set of skis that makes it easier to transport the product on snow and ice.
There are 2 compartments inside the model, and on the lid there are 4 additional containers for small items. The product is well protected from water, and also has a very low cost - approximately 1200 rubles. Buyers called the material not very durable as a disadvantage.
Helios 23 liters
A very minimalist galvanized iron box. Incredibly simple, accessible and cheap - 960 rubles. It will be an excellent purchase for tough and experienced professionals who are solely concerned with the quantity of their catch. The weight of the model is a little more than 2 kilograms, and it is also equipped with a convenient carrying strap. There are two sections inside. Unfortunately, such a model can only support weight up to 130 kilograms.
FishBox Helios 19 liters
Another Helios model from a Russian manufacturer. A very convenient product made of plastic in two colors, durable and modern. The maximum weight is 130 kg, there are pockets on the sides where you can put fishing rods and other gear, as well as some tools. The package includes a strap for easy carrying, as well as a comfortable seat. The price of the model is 840 rubles. The reviews are different: most people like the charabancs from this brand, especially since the price is extremely low. But there are also those who are dissatisfied with the quality of the plastic.
Artekno Repakki
The manufacturer of this model is Finland. The Finnish box Artekno Repakki is a real favorite of anglers. This model folds into a backpack and is equipped with straps, making it easy to carry. And the product weighs only one and a half kilograms. In the inner part there is a partition that can be easily removed if desired. The box is easy to clean and does not absorb fish odors. Can withstand up to 350 kilograms.
Rapala Icebox
Another Finnish fishing box with excellent characteristics. It has a large volume, but is light in weight and easy to transport. A distinctive feature is the presence of a built-in pull-out chair. The fabric of the product is dense, does not tear, and there are several pockets for fishing rods on the sides. The backpack box is absolutely waterproof and weighs 2 kilograms. The price may seem high - 2800 rubles, but the quality of the product fully justifies it.
Mikado UAF-002
This is a Polish model, the case is particularly durable. The weight is just over 2 kilograms, so with such a box you can easily move on the ice. The product has a strong bottom, which completely eliminates squeezing. Inside there are several compartments equipped with strong locks. The model has a durable and comfortable belt, as well as rubber pads that reduce slipping. This fishing box costs approximately 6,500 rubles.
A-Elita Sputnik Silver
One of the best fishing boxes from a Russian manufacturer. The plastic frame is reinforced with polypropylene foam, so the model is lightweight and durable at the same time. There is a hinged pocket, as well as a compartment for the caught catch, equipped with a window. The model is very frost-resistant, and its bottom is corrugated, well resistant to excessive slipping. There are removable boxes for tackle, as well as for a thermos. The price of the product starts from 4100 rubles. The disadvantage is the ability to withstand only up to 100 kg of weight.
"Pathfinder 30 liters"
Good and high quality Russian model. The capacity, as the name suggests, is 30 liters, which is quite a lot for fishing boxes. Made of frost-resistant polypropylene, weight is almost 2.4 kg. There is one compartment inside, but the lid has additional containers. The box is equipped with a strong strap for easy carrying and can withstand weight up to 100 kilograms. Costs from 950 rubles. There are two drawbacks - low load-bearing capacity and a not very convenient lid, which quickly becomes unusable if not used carefully.
Salmo 2075
This Polish model is considered one of the best, it is bought very often. The box is made of durable plastic and has 2 tiers. The model is very well thought out, it is pleasant and comfortable to sit on. There is a pull-out shelf-table. The lid contains 4 separate boxes for tackle, and the container itself contains 2 large compartments. A convenient carrying strap is included. There are some shortcomings, but they are extremely insignificant to refuse the purchase. For example, sometimes a belt gets stuck or a pocket opens in deep snow.
What should the box be like?
Each angler has his own requirements for the box. Here, a lot depends on the method of fishing, as well as on the number and volume of things that will be taken for fishing. And in order for all the necessary equipment to remain safe and sound, the internal space must have various compartments and partitions. • Supporters of sheer trolling need a small box volume. As for gear, it is enough to have a couple of fishing rods and a set of spinners and balancers. And since when searching for pike perch or pike perch, the angler has to travel long distances, the total weight should be minimal. In addition, for lovers of spinners, tall models are preferable, from which it is more convenient to rise in order to continue moving across the pond. • Fans of float and jig fishing linger for a long time on catchy holes. The jig fisherman should have with him not only tackle and spare accessories, but also groundbait, bait, a slotted spoon, and a tent. Accordingly, the volume of the box is required to be large. It is more convenient to wire the jig or monitor the float while sitting on low models with a wide seat. • Fans of catching predators with girders put a dozen girders, a hook, a yawner, an extractor, etc. in a box. And since the girders are often installed for the whole day, the supply of food and hot drinks in the box increases significantly. Many fishermen, while waiting for a bite from a girdle, while away the time with a float rod or try to seduce a predator with a spoon. Such fishermen will need a spacious and roomy box. For those who like to combine different fishing methods, a medium-sized and high-height model is suitable. It will be convenient for both walking and static fishing.
Parameters that this fishing attribute must meet
Any fishing box, whether purchased or homemade, requires the following:
- the box should be spacious enough;
- the box should be as light as possible;
- the box should be comfortable for sitting;
- the box must be durable;
- the box should have several compartments intended for different purposes;
- The box should have a convenient carrying strap.

Which layout should you choose?
The choice of layout for a winter box is determined by how the angler prefers to fish, how much space he needs for the individual components of fishing, i.e. gear, food supplies and caught fish, as well as how it will be convenient for him to manage all the tools he needs for fishing.
For example, if a fisherman catches perch or other fish with a jig, then only a little space is required for the fishing rods. At the same time, a fan of stationary fishing for white fish should keep in mind that the gear itself, the bait, and the feeder will take up a lot of space.

Winter fishing requires a convenient and spacious box. Fishing rods, boxes with lures and baits, a thermos with a hot drink, fish, a hook and other fishing accessories are placed in it.
You can make a good fishing box with your own hands. In this article we will consider in detail the process of its manufacture. We will indicate what materials and tools will be required for such work.
Step-by-step process for making a winter box with photos
How to make a box with your own hands? We will make it from wood with dimensions of 45x39x23 cm. It will be closed with a lid-box with compartments inside. On top of the lid we will attach a seat made of a special filler, which we will cover with soft leatherette. We will make the walls of the box from seven-layer plywood. We will fill the planks on each side, and on the sides there will be timber measuring 6 cm wide for reinforcement.
The result should be a box like this.
Let's pay attention to the locks. They can be purchased in specialized stores
We will fasten the locks with strong screws, as shown in the photo.
The lid opens thanks to the following hinges:
We will fasten these hinges with screws. They will allow the lid to open completely. We will nail oak runners to the bottom of the box.
We will make the runners from timber with dimensions of 20x20 cm. We will fasten them with screws. The runners will allow you to drag the box across the ice. This is very convenient in cases where you have to travel long distances. Another plus about them is that the bottom will not come into contact with snow and ice. Oak slats are very hard and do not absorb practically moisture, hold their shape well and do not rot.
The inside of the box looks like this:
We see that there are metal grooves attached to the sides. We fasten them with thin self-tapping screws. You can insert plywood into these grooves, and thus get partitions. It is very comfortable. We will get three branches.
In one you can place fish, boxes of bait and groundbait, and in the second - boxes of bait, a thermos and other accessories. The small one can accommodate fishing rods.
This is the internal configuration of a hand-made box:
We will make a hole on one of the sides through which we will throw the fish.
We will use a belt like this:
We tighten this element with three screws or self-tapping screws.
We attach 10 mm thick polyethylene foam insulation to the lid using waterproof glue. It does not allow moisture to pass through and is quite soft.
We cover the top of the insulation with dermantin:
We will make the dermantine coating in this way:
This cover can be stapled to the sides of the box using a nail gun. The result is a reliable design.
We coat the resulting fishing box with our own hands with waterproof varnish in two layers. You can use parquet varnish. We make sure that all elements and sidewalls are carefully coated.
When opened, the box looks like this:
We will make the lid in the form of a box 6 cm high. Additional compartments can be made inside it. To do this, we will also make grooves into which the plywood is inserted. We fasten the plywood on top so that we get sashes.
We attach special clamps on the sides, and screw the handles on top with self-tapping screws. The result will be approximately the same design as in the bedside tables. To open the sash, you need to pull the handle.
In these compartments you can store elements of fishing equipment.
As you can see, we have a completely functional and spacious box. Now we know how to make a fishing box for winter fishing with our own hands.
Conclusion about the winter fishing box
This box will serve you for more than one season. An inspection is required at the end of each season. If necessary, the box should be re-varnished. Such actions will significantly prolong his life.

Step-by-step assembly instructions
We will assume that you already have the drawing in your hands, you purchased the material (boards, nails, glue and varnish) either in a ready-made shape and size, or you cut the blanks yourself.
- You should start with the frame. In general, in principle, you can use either nails and glue in combination, or just one. The glue requires setting time and, in addition, the product will need to be placed under a press. Nails do not have this disadvantage, but they do not provide complete tightness. The ideal option is to coat the boards with glue and then nail them. As you may have guessed, the nails will act as a press. After you have made the frame, that is, nailed four boards to the base, you can move on to the lid. You should have decided at the very beginning, at the planning stage, whether the lid will be removable or hinged. If you want to make a removable one, take a board with an area slightly smaller than the base and cover the ends with fabric, preferably leather. This will ensure the lid is tight and fits tightly to the walls of the box. If you want to make a lid with hinges, then the sealing mechanism will be different. In this case, your box will resemble a chest, only instead of a lock there will be a tie on it. It can be metal or leather. You can even make it from a regular waist belt.
- Then make a tackle section. It is best to do it separately from the fish container to prevent dirt from getting there. Usually the compartment for gear is made on the lid, that is, you will need to place on it, as it were, a second mini box, where the lid from the main one will serve as the base.
- Once you've completed the frame, move on to the covering. By and large, the box doesn’t need to be varnished, but the problem is that wood tends to absorb moisture and, as a result, change its parameters. In addition, the wood will be saturated with the smell of fish and will always smell like that. Of course, in the cold, moisture will not be absorbed into the wood, since the liquid is in crystalline form, but when you come home, your box will certainly absorb a generous portion of fishy moisture.
It is better to varnish both the internal and external surfaces (when buying a varnish, make sure that it is not smelly so that the fish does not spoil while it is in the box), since the box will often need to be placed on dirt, and the wood may soon wear out. Apply the varnish not too thick, but not too thin. Color to suit your taste.
Work plan
Before starting assembly, you need to think everything through. In order not to forget anything, it is better to make a drawing of the future box. Not everyone was friendly with drawing and geometry at school, and that may have been a long time ago. However, here you will need the simplest option. The main thing is to note the main things for yourself:
- Exact dimensions,
- Shape,
- Some details are in more detail.
To implement the scheme, you can use any convenient option. Common ones include:
- A drawing made on a computer. You can do it yourself or contact a “specialist”. It would be quite suitable, for example, for a child of primary school age.
