Necessary materials

The easiest way is to make a pneumatic gun from improvised means. To do this you will need a minimum set of materials.

Parts for making homemade pneumatics can be bought at any hardware store or ordered online.

Set No. 1 of materials for the simplest “air”:

  • plastic (air) pump (collapsible design);
  • steel spring for pump piston;
  • aluminum tube 30-40 cm long and with a diameter for 4.5 mm balls;
  • acrylic paint black.

Set No. 2 of materials for PCP pneumatics:

  • plastic bottle 1 l + cap;
  • valve from the camera (from the wheel) + 2 rubber washers + nut;
  • sprayer valve;
  • aluminum tube 30-40 cm long and with a diameter for 6 mm balls;
  • air pump + hose (for pumping air).

The main part of a homemade pneumatic gun is the barrel. The size of the projectile depends on its diameter. Usually an aluminum or metal tube is used as the barrel. You can buy steel balls of 4.5-6-9.5-12 mm caliber on the Internet. The projectile should easily enter the barrel.

I suggest straining your memory and remembering a simple design . no, not arson, but a more innocent one - a children's air gun . What do we need for this: first. no, street pillars have nothing to do with it, we just need a piece of board forty mm thick and long. choose the length yourself according to the length of your forearms. Secondly, a rubber tourniquet, preferably medical. You can cut it from an old gas mask or, at worst, a bicycle or car tube. We also need a pump, an ordinary bicycle pump. We will cut a weapon stock out of wood, and cut out a small hollow on the fore-end to place the pump barrel on it. We will thoroughly sand the butt with sandpaper and begin making the trigger mechanism from ordinary thick steel wire. Here we will probably need a vice, pliers and a hammer. We bend the wire like a rocking chair, you can see the design in the picture. Now we will attach the rubber band to the end of the forend; all that remains is to firmly screw the pump to the butt, for example with electrical tape.

Setup phase

How to test in practice the simplest “air” made from set No. 1:

  • place a cardboard target at a distance of 1-2 meters;
  • insert a 4.5 mm steel ball into the barrel;
  • push the ball down with a wooden stick until it stops;
  • take aim (point the barrel at the target);
  • pull the pump handle towards you and release sharply;
  • the ball will fly out of the barrel;
  • check whether the projectile hits the target.

How to set up and test a hunting PCP airgun made from kit No. 2:

  • place a cardboard target at a distance of 1-3 meters;
  • use a hand pump to pump air into the bottle;
  • insert 1-2 6 mm steel balls into the barrel;
  • take aim;
  • press the sprayer hook;
  • steel balls will fly out of the barrel;
  • check if you hit the target.

If the shells do not fly out of the barrel, it means that the pneumatic is not made airtight. Air leaks through the cracks of the structure and does not push the steel balls out of the tube. It is advisable to lubricate all joints of parts with superglue.

Criterias of choice

When purchasing a gun, you should first determine for what purposes the weapon will be used. If you need a weapon for fun, then a cheap, simple model with minimal muzzle energy will do. In the case when you take an air gun for hunting, you should take a magnum-pneumatic model.

When purchasing, you should pay attention to such model parameters as:

  1. Power . This is one of the most important parameters. The more powerful the rifle, the higher the destructive power of the fired bullet and the more accurate the hit. Only the most powerful models are suitable for hunting and sport shooting.
  2. Accuracy . It depends not only on how well the inside of the barrel is polished, but also on the design of the sight. Cheap models have a simple comb-shaped sight at the end of the muzzle. The optical sight for the air gun can be purchased separately. On more modern and expensive ones, aerial optics are installed.
  3. Mechanism . Not only the mass of the rifle and the speed of the shot depend on this parameter, but also the trajectory of the bullet, and this also affects accuracy. The price per shot depends on the method of producing muzzle energy. For example, for air guns with a gas-cylinder mechanism, you will have to buy cans of carbon dioxide. And this, considering the cost of one cylinder, is very sensitive.
  4. The material from which the air bag is made. The strength and durability of the gun depends on this parameter. Traditionally, blowguns are made of metal and wood, but recently models made of plastic and its varieties have appeared. They cost less, but are not as durable and are a bit risky to use.
  5. Price . If you want to purchase something of high quality that can be used for various purposes, including hunting.

Definition of the concept

An aerial weapon is a weapon similar in shape and operating principle to a firearm, but only it uses not the energy of gunpowder as a combat force, but the energy of air movement. Many modern models have greater power and range, so if you plan to use the weapon for hunting, it is better to immediately purchase an aerial sight. Aerial shots are practically inaudible, so the most suitable option for aerial hunting is hunting birds and small animals that can be scared away by the loud shot of a conventional gun.

  • disassemble the plastic air pump;
  • put a steel spring on the pump piston (it should be slightly longer than the piston);
  • Drill a hole in the upper part of the plastic pump housing with a drill;

  • screw (insert into the hole) a 40 cm aluminum tube (glue with superglue);
  • secure the structure from above with electrical tape;
  • paint the “air” with black paint.

How to make a homemade PCP pneumatic gun for hunting from kit No. 2;

  • Make a hole in the bottom of a plastic 1 liter bottle (heated on a gas burner with a metal screw);
  • put a rubber washer on the valve and insert this blank through the neck into the bottle;
  • stick the tip of the valve out of the hole drilled in the bottom of the bottle;
  • put the second o-ring + nut on the valve;
  • attach the valve from the sprayer to the lid;
  • screw the cap with the valve from the sprayer to the bottle;
  • insert the aluminum tube into the sprayer head;
  • secure the structure with electrical tape.

Tips for increasing rifle power

How to make the air gun more powerful and more accurate? This question is asked by many owners of old, low-power air guns. This is much easier to do than it seems. In some cases, this will require some material investments. Usually, in order to achieve the goal, they either improve the sealing or replace the rammer spring with a more powerful one.

And if everything is more or less clear with the spring, then increasing the tightness of the cylinder and piston will require significant effort. In any case, before strengthening the air, it is necessary to improve the working cylinder.

To increase tightness, change the piston head. It is cut out of denser rubber and adjusted to size. The inside walls of the cylinder are coated with machine oil. The breech is expanded to allow more air into the chamber, and a new spring is installed.

Choosing the right blow guns

If you plan to buy a pneumatic gun for blowing with compressed air and use it for many years, then you need to choose models that are not cheap. When buying a gun for a compressor whose body is made of steel, you need to take into account one main factor - the tendency to corrode. To protect the steel case, paints and varnishes are used to paint the case. When using the device in conditions of high humidity, as well as when storing it improperly, oxides and rust occur.

Even on steel devices, the dimensions of the nozzle change due to the formation of a corrosion layer. To eliminate such negative consequences, it is recommended to buy a blow-off gun for the compressor, the body of which is made of mineral ceramics. They are durable, have less weight, but are inferior to steel units in terms of strength. In addition to the body material of the blow guns, the following factors must be taken into account when purchasing them:

  1. The limit value of compressed air consumption, which is measured in liters per minute. This value is also an indicator of productivity, and the more liters per minute a gun can push through the nozzle, the higher its efficiency. It is also worth considering that the rate of emptying of the compressor receiver depends on the flow rate. This means that the unit will need to be turned on more often to pump in a new portion of air. Air consumption also affects the quality of work; the lower the value, the worse the tool copes with the task.
  2. Pressure - its value usually varies from 2 to 8 atmospheres. For domestic needs, conventional compressed air guns, which are designed to supply pressure in the range from 2 to 4 atmospheres, are sufficient. The production uses reinforced models of pneumatic blow guns
  3. Connecting hose diameter. There are models of guns that are equipped not only with nozzles, but also come with a high-pressure hose. It is not rational to buy such a kit, since the hose for the blow gun can be purchased separately, choosing the required length and material of manufacture. Depending on the throughput and size of the connecting fitting, it is necessary to take into account the diameter of the connecting hose, the size of which can vary from 6 to 10 mm
  4. Weight - the simplicity of the device’s design does not make it heavy, but if you compare mineral ceramics and steel products, steel will be heavier. Devices made of aluminum are considered a Chinese or basement counterfeit, and their service life is 3-5 times less than their high-quality counterparts. The weight of the device affects the ease of use. If you use the tool for a short time, then the likelihood of feeling tired is excluded, but with prolonged manipulations, when large volumes have to be blown, weight plays an important role. The weight of the devices is from 0.20 to 0.40 kg, but also take into account the weight of the connected hose
