How to create an original chandelier from a cart wheel with your own hands

I have been creating original items for themed interiors for many years. Not long ago, one customer needed a chandelier made from a cart wheel for installation in a cafe. It was interesting for me to create such a decorative element with my own hands. I will tell you in more detail in the article what materials and tools you need to prepare.

Thus, ensuring a pleasant pastime for all family members, developing the handicraft skills of the younger ones, you can make a useful and practical souvenir for your grandmother or an extraordinary piece of decoration for your country room with your own hands.

Hand-made wooden chandeliers are an option for a creative approach to decorating a room. With such a product you can achieve an unusual decoration of a room that does not require material costs. Pleasant lighting and positive energy can create a soulful and homely, or stylish and original atmosphere for many years.

Once upon a time in Moscow and Rus', carriages, carts and carts were the main means of transportation. Now, finding a real wheel from them to use as an element of country decor is not so easy. One of the options is as the participants of the “Home and Dacha” forum did. The task is simplified by the fact that in this case there is no need to follow ancient technologies, creating with your own hands using special equipment a durable product that must withstand many kilometers of travel.

However, there is another way - you can find a real wheel somewhere in the outback of the village. In this case, the chandelier will be truly unique! Already known to our readers, a forum participant with the nickname Ottt

turned out to be such a lucky guy. Local residents brought him well-preserved old cart wheels, the rim of which was made up of two bent halves rather than separate segments. The decision came immediately: it would be a chandelier - a DIY wheel into the gazebo.

Manufacturing of axles and fastening of the structure

To attach the wheels to the body of the cart, you need to place them on axles, for which you can use, for example, cuttings from shovels or other garden tools. These cuttings can be cut into pieces according to the required length of the workpiece. You need to make holes in the chocks in which the axles will be secured. Therefore, the inside of the hub must be flat.

Additionally, 4 more lumps should be prepared. One of the sides of each of them should be beveled. These structural elements are used to be attached to the body. They are fixed under the axles in order to ensure a stable position of the cart body.

Spokes

For a wheel with a diameter of 60 mm with a given rim width, it will be necessary to make 8 spokes with a length of about 190 mm. To do this, take 50x50 mm bars with a length of 230 mm. The difference in length of 20 mm on both sides is necessary for arranging dowels that provide fastening to the hub and rim. Each part is carefully processed with a plane, as can be seen in the photo of a wooden wheel.

To decorate the dowels, you will need to mark a distance of 20 mm from the edge on both edges and cut to a depth of 15 mm. Using a knife, excess wood is removed and the dowels are given a cylindrical shape.

Having secured the knitting needles with a clamp on a workbench or stool, cut off the edges of the workpiece using a milling device. As a result, all eight parts become more rounded.

How to decorate an old chandelier

The most affordable ways to decorate purchased chandeliers are painting and decoupage.

Coloring

To paint, you need to purchase special acrylic paints and an outline for glass and ceramics.

Advantages of round structures

A wheel-shaped chandelier has many practical advantages. Let's look at some of them:

  1. Round-shaped lighting fixtures are capable of creating diffused light. This results in uniform lighting that affects the entire space, even its most remote corners.
  2. With the help of a “wheel” chandelier it is easy to completely illuminate fairly spacious rooms. Modern stores offer a wide range of designs of different sizes. With their help, you can easily provide enough light to even a very large space.
  3. If you install one or more round ceiling chandeliers in your home, you can easily create the necessary accents with the help of light. In a similar way, it will also be possible to divide the space into several separate zones.

One of the most important features of such products is their presentable appearance. A stylish and luxurious wheel-shaped chandelier will fit perfectly into absolutely any interior. At the same time, it will certainly add luxury and originality to the atmosphere. If you like stylish and unusual things, be sure to take a closer look at this product.

Caution in operation

  • The hygroscopicity of wooden appliances leads to changes in shape and cracking of the surface when exposed to a humid environment. Therefore, it is not recommended to install wooden chandeliers in damp rooms with high humidity, for example, bathrooms and basements.

  • The flammability and fire hazard of wooden lamps makes it necessary to provide additional safety measures against fire.

Materials:

  • bicycle wheel
  • a piece of furniture board 1.8 cm thick and an additional piece of wood 10 cm wide, 1 cm thick
  • stain
  • PVA glue
  • cartridge E-27 (4 pcs.)
  • nuts for E-27 cartridges (8 pcs.)
  • incandescent lamps E-27 (4 pcs.)
  • wire ShVVP 2/0.75 (60 cm)
  • crimp connectors
  • block
  • wood screws
  • screws (2 pcs.) and plugs (2 pcs.) for attaching the lamp to the wall.

How to treat wood?

According to experts, it is necessary to use only natural compounds, since they evaporate under the influence of heat. The simplest option is to use homemade peppermint oil.

The ingredients are as follows:

  • Purified linseed oil - 1 l.
  • Mint - 1 glass.

Application:

  1. Mix the ingredients and leave for 14 days in a dark place, shaking every day.
  2. Add natural beeswax to the resulting mixture (proportions 1:3, 1:4 or 1:5 are possible) and you will get an excellent mastic for wood made from natural materials.

Important! A less labor-intensive and cheaper option is to use a solution of potassium permanganate as a stain.

Some specific examples

No wonder they say: it is better to see once than to hear a hundred times. Therefore, it is worth considering several illustrative examples of the location of a “wheel” chandelier in different rooms.

In the shape of a cart wheel with candle lights

This version of the ceiling lamp is an example of a classic chandelier of this type. The base is a large wooden wheel. The spokes on it are made of metal with elegant forging.

The entire structure is attached to the ceiling using several massive metal chains. This adds special charm and originality to the chandelier.

And the design is completed by modern light bulbs that resemble real wax candles. This chandelier will be a great addition to the interior of a hunting lodge. At the same time, it will provide enough light for the entire room.

Sources of light

Based on the number of knitting needles (12), the forum member calculated the number of lamps - 6 pieces (12 would be too much). Six E14 minion cartridges were purchased - they looked more sophisticated than the full-size E27. Light bulbs were also purchased that imitate the fire of a candle.

The next step was to decide how to secure the lamps. There was an M10 threaded hole at the end of the cartridge. The wires should also come out through it. The forum member came up with the following idea: he drilled blind holes in the wheel (15-20 mm) for the wires to exit (perpendicular, 10 mm in diameter, and at an angle of 45 degrees, 6 mm in diameter) - see photo.

How to make a wheel out of wood with your own hands - Smart Summer Resident

Civilization has long penetrated into our villages and villages, and it is becoming less and less common to see a cart with wooden wheels on rural roads. But all the ancient craftsmanship of making wooden wheels has not died out, and in some cases such wooden products are in great demand.

Firstly, now wooden wheels are often used for decorative purposes, and secondly, there are still owners who prefer wooden wheels.

Nowadays, wheels with tires are more often attached to carts - the ride is more comfortable, there is less shaking on potholes, but for a horse it is much easier to pull a cart on wooden wheels, they are easier to move and dirt sticks to them less.

The wheel manufacturing technology can be useful for a wheelbarrow, cart or other device with rotating structural elements.

Peculiarities

The circle and wheel have always had a special, sacred meaning. People associated the circle with the sun, which gives life to everything on earth. The peoples of India, Mesopotamia and Byzantium compared the spokes of the wheel with the rays of the heavenly body. In almost all religious teachings there is a symbol of a circle, meaning the continuity of the cycle of life and new rebirths.

The Slavs have always considered the circle to be the strongest amulet. However, even if people do not know about the real meaning of such a geometric figure, they subconsciously somehow experience an interest in the circle. It represents integrity and constancy.

What rooms are they suitable for?

Such design solutions will be a great addition to any interior. They will fit well into a decor in the style of classic and avant-garde, loft and country. By the way, wheel-shaped chandeliers are successfully used not only for city apartments and country houses.

Very often they become decorations and functional devices for cafes, bars and restaurants. Owners of establishments with a medieval theme will especially appreciate such products.

However, the interior does not have to be classic or aged. A wheel-shaped chandelier is also perfect for modern, stylish rooms. It emphasizes the originality of the interior and the originality of the owner of the house or establishment.

If you want to add a special touch to your space, be sure to take a closer look at these lighting fixtures.

Of course, you should still take into account the style of the room. Try to understand which lamp is best suited in a particular case. If you have any difficulties with the choice, you can contact professional designers. They will be able to choose exactly what seems ideal to you.

Country

The decorative rustic country style, which originated in America, is widely used to decorate private and country houses. The nature surrounding the building is in perfect harmony with the style. This direction combines ethnic notes, comfort and homely warmth. Its main characteristic is the use of a large amount of wood. A wheel-shaped chandelier is ideal for this style.

For the above style, as well as to decorate the main light source, natural materials are used. Not only wood, but also stone are actively used. Forged elements in the form of plants and the like can be used as decorations for the chandelier. Warm wood and cold metal combine to create an expressive and stylish air.

Antique wood wall light

And for dessert, a decorative wall lamp.

In winter, I gave my husband the idea to make a wooden lamp in an old style. I found a photo on the Internet.

Having chosen the option they liked, the couple got to work.

The wooden surface is aged. Painted and varnished.

This is what ended up happening.

The lamp was later replaced with a model more suitable in style.

Solombala also plans to replace the rope with sisal, a coarse natural fiber.

Preparing lamp shades

The husband selected several glass bottles that suited his idea - to make an unusual chandelier from this waste material. He did not remove the labels from them, deciding that it would look quite harmonious for a recreation room in the attic of the garage. In order for the bottles to become lampshades, he needed to somehow remove the bottom of each one.

My husband tried several options for performing such complex work. The first experiment was carried out with a change in temperature - the glass should have cracked along the boundary of the change in this factor. But nothing happened, since the crack simply split the bottle into two uneven parts from top to bottom.

The second experimental bottle went through a grinder with a cutting stone. But this also did not give the desired result - the work was very rough, and the glass also cracked. Then my husband decided that a drill would be best for small carpentry work, and he also taped the cutting line with masking tape. The work of cutting off the bottom of each bottle was very slow and painstaking. My husband had to go through the cutting line more than once to separate the bottom from the body. But even in this case, the cut turned out to be absolutely even on not all bottles - somewhere there are still quite deep chips.

When all the bottles turned into lampshade blanks, the husband began to polish the cuts. This had to be done with a grinder with different degrees of wheel grit - 60, 100 and then 200 units. The grinding process itself took place in water to reduce possible damage. After sanding, the edge of each lamp turned out matte; my husband really liked it and did not continue to polish it.
