It would seem, how can an ordinary small rug change the interior? But it turns out that it can become not only useful, but also a bright, interesting detail in interior design. Of course, you can buy it in a store, fortunately, now there are rugs for every taste and color. But think how nice it will be when you make it yourself, especially since such a rug can be easily made from old things, for example: threads, fabrics, wine corks, belts, and much more. All you need is to know the step-by-step instructions, stock up on the necessary materials and patience.
How to make a rug out of towels with your own hands
There are several techniques that can be used to make a high-quality rug.
The weaving technique will allow you to quickly create a simple product. You don't even need to use a sewing machine to weave. This technique is suitable for children's creativity.
Since all towels are different in color and shape, the carpets will not be the same. You can “play” with form and content.
The patchwork technique is quite labor-intensive, since it will be necessary to cut out and process each piece.
The appliqué technique will also require perseverance, but will help you create original works with different textures.
Classification and purpose of rugs
All rugs that you can make with your own hands are divided into:
- textile;
- natural;
- synthetic.
A bathroom mat is an item necessary to ensure a safe and comfortable showering environment. If water gets on ceramic floor tiles, it is unsafe to walk on them. A mat on the floor prevents slipping.
Bathroom rugs, made in the same color scheme as the interior of the room, look like fashionable designer accessories.
Is it possible to make a rug out of old towels?
It is clear that such a carpet will differ from store-bought options, in addition, it will also be quite weighty, but its main advantage is the absence of harmful impurities, glue, cost-effectiveness and warmth.
You can make a carpet from old towels or unnecessary items using three techniques. Each technique, or more precisely, its choice, depends on what materials will be used and how much time a person is willing to spend on it. It is also worth choosing the method of making a carpet based on the density of the fabric and the shape of the carpet that you want to get in the end.
A towel mat in the bathroom is actually a very necessary thing, since with it you will not slip on a wet floor or smooth surface. It is economically profitable to do such a thing, because at the same time you will give a second life to old towels that you no longer want to use.
The design of the rug is quite modern, so you don’t have to worry that such a thing will somehow ruin your modern bathroom. Moreover, many people will really like this rug. This thing can be used not only for the bathroom, but also for your four-legged pet to live on it. Just a few simple steps and you will get a multifunctional piece of furniture. Just to make your rug look expressive, choose brighter towels for it.
What tools are needed to create a rug?
You can create a rug from old towels with your own hands in just half an hour. You will need a minimum of tools and materials for this:
- Old towels
- Cotton cloth or an old smooth towel
- Tape measure or ruler
- Tailor's scissors, which can be replaced with large stationery scissors
- Sewing machine or thick needle with strong thread
- Inspiration and desire to create
We suggest making a soft rug from old towels for the bathroom, toilet or hallway.
To make the model neat, it is better to choose plain towels. When weaving, the pattern on the canvas will turn into small motley ripples, which can ruin the overall impression. But several plain towels of different colors will create pleasant shimmers.
Every home has old terry towels. Usually in the middle part they are worn so badly that they become transparent when held up to light.
If the towels have already been painted with a bright print, they can be used to create a rug using the patchwork technique. The diversity of this option will be justified, which will create a rustic flavor in the bathroom.
They can be used to make useful things in the future, for example, a do-it-yourself rug from old towels.
Making a rug with your own hands
Before you begin, you should decide on the material from which the rug will be made. It can be done:
- from yarn;
- from a terry towel;
- from wine corks;
- from pebbles;
- from packages;
- from old clothes;
- from pompoms.
The decorative top can be glued or sewn to the rubber base with strong threads. It is better to use silicone glue. It is quite strong and not afraid of moisture.
What else will you need for work?
To work with thick yarn, you need a hook number 5-8. You can try different sizes, knit samples and evaluate the result. The carpet in the bathroom should be dense, without unnecessary openwork.
Before starting work, you need to wash your hands, especially if the threads are light. The finished product should be washed, but it is better to keep it clean during the process.
Crochet hooks should be large and have a strong handle.
Round foot mat made with a hoop
You will need a gymnastics hoop and old knitted clothing, such as T-shirts.
Operating procedure:
- Cut the T-shirt into strips horizontally to create rings.
- Place the rings on the hoop so that they radiate out from the center in the form of rays. The fabric should not be too stretched. If the diameter of the hoop does not allow this, you can simply tie a strip of fabric in a knot. All base lines should intersect in the center.
- Next, a strip of fabric is secured in the center and pulled alternately above and below the warp thread, moving in a circle. When the strip ends, the next one is tied or sewn to it. After the entire hoop is filled, the warp threads are cut and tied.
- It is recommended to sew or glue a rubber base at the bottom.
Bathroom rug made from wine corks
This version of a warm, and even moisture-resistant rug can be made after celebrating an anniversary, wedding or other celebration at which you will collect a large number of wine corks. To make a medium-sized rug, you will need about two hundred corks. They, in turn, need to be cut in half lengthwise and sanded on the rough side.
The resulting blanks should be glued with a waterproof type of glue to a suitable base option. For example, it could be thick fabric or an old unnecessary rug. The simplest option would be to make a square shape of the product by gluing corks to it in even rows. Well, if you are a fairly creative person, you can turn on your own imagination and place the corks at different angles to each other, as a result of which you will get interesting, original patterns.
We offer another version of the carpet made of the same material. The plugs need to be collected on a fishing line/cord made of nylon. In this case, the work will resemble collecting beads fastened together in rows. The peculiarity of this option is that it is completely moisture resistant and dries very quickly when wet. To save traffic jams, connect them in a checkerboard pattern. But in this case it is better to leave them intact.

Have a relaxing time using pebbles
But it’s true, walking along the sea coast is a pleasure. But you can bring a little of this coastline into your own bathroom! A rug made from sea pebbles looks beautiful and is also very healthy. In this case, you can use sea/river/mosaic pebbles. It is attached to a mesh base.
The simplest methods include the following. Take a tray that is not too deep, pour small pebbles into it so that the bottom is completely covered. The walls of the tray will not look boring if they are painted blue or green. You can also paste over a base with imitation seaweed.
We invite you to familiarize yourself with the instructions given at the DIY bath mat master class.
You can also use a more complex option, but making such a rug also does not require any skills. The base will be some version of an old unnecessary rubber or other carpet, the main thing is that the material is smooth.
If you want the product to be patterned, it is best to first arrange the stones in the order that will be most beautiful. Then you will need to lift each pebble, lubricate it with water-resistant glue, lubricate the base and glue the pebbles to it. If you manage to purchase pebble-based tiles, making a rug will be much easier. In this case, the finished squares will only need to be glued to the base, and after about ten minutes you can enjoy your own efforts.
Ideas for creativity
To make bathroom rugs with your own hands, you should clearly understand what function they perform. This is necessary in order to select the optimal material and think through the design of the model.
Homemade rugs from different materials
One of the safety rules is to choose non-conducting materials. In the bathroom we often use appliances - a washing machine, a hairdryer and other electrical appliances. The base must be anti-slip and moisture resistant. Rubber, silicone and rubber have such properties. To make the tactile sensations as pleasant as possible, the decorative part of the rug can be made of bamboo, soft-touch textiles and other materials. The main properties that an accessory should have are low thermal conductivity, an anti-slip effect, and a beautiful appearance. To learn how to make a bath mat with your own hands, there are many interesting lessons. It is easy to create original and functional home decor, while the time and money spent on its production are minimal.
Fluffy rug
Homemade Bath Mats - Basics
A bathroom rug must have certain properties:
- do not slip;
- warm;
- be resistant to moisture.
These factors must be taken into account when choosing materials. Products made from natural fabrics or yarn can quickly become damp and moldy. It is better to give preference to materials with a large share of synthetics. For an anti-slip effect, it is recommended to use a rubber backing. It can be purchased at a hardware store.
Difficulties
Needlewomen who have at least once made a carpet with their own hands will confirm that this is not a quick and very difficult task.
- Firstly, you will need at least 5 hours of free time. For a carpet with a diameter of 70 cm you will have to use approximately 4 skeins of thick yarn or 170 wine corks, 4 knitted T-shirts, 3 kg of pebbles.
- Secondly, you need to give the rug a neat, symmetrical shape. To do this, use materials of the same size and thickness. Special patterns and tools for weaving will also be useful.
Lifehack
To make work easier, many craftswomen use a special mesh - Stramin. It can be used in different techniques:
- tie scraps of fabric;
- attach yarn pompoms;
- perform crochet weaving.
What’s most important is that the bath mat turns out to be neat and regular in shape, and the weaving process is greatly simplified. You simply intertwine the threads with the mesh. By the way, Stramin can be replaced with construction mesh or anti-slip mat from Ikea.
The mesh size and thread thickness should be approximately the same.
Textile mat
How nice it is to stand on a soft textile rug when leaving the bathroom! The stores offer textiles of all colors, shapes and textures. But is it worth paying more? You can make a stylish and practical set of rugs for the toilet and bathroom with your own hands from old things.
Rug made from old things in a marine theme
We suggest making a rug from old T-shirts or any knitted items. The phenomenon of such a product is that a stranger would never guess what the chic, shaggy and soft flooring is made of. To work, you will need several old multi-colored knitwear items, scissors, a sewing machine and a piece of durable fabric for the base.
The algorithm is as follows:
- Preparatory stage. First you need to prepare the strips. To do this, we cut the T-shirts into thin strips, stretch each one a little in length so that it curls into a tube. The width of the cut strips is no more than three centimeters.
- If the tubes are long, cut them into pieces 10 cm long.
- We draw a sketch on a thick fabric base. As a rule, the kit consists of a large rectangular rug and an irregularly shaped rug, with a hole cut out for the toilet stand.
- We sew the prepared knitted strips to the base. Lay out in one layer and sew with a machine exactly in the middle of the ribbons.
- To give the rug a neat appearance, the edges of the base are hemmed.
You can use plain or multi-colored stripes, lay them out randomly, or draw a pattern. During use, it is important to dry the textile product well in order to extend its service life and avoid the unpleasant “aroma” of dampness in the room. An original shaggy set of rugs will not only provide warmth, but will also lift the spirits of everyone in the household.

Children's variations
Children prefer their own rooms with appropriate furnishings - everything should be bright and fabulous. Therefore, the task of parents is to take into account every little detail. If you previously did not take care of purchasing furniture or textiles for the children's room with appropriate prints, then today you can easily correct the situation:
- First, buy curtains with a child's pattern for your child's room.
- Secondly, replace the existing dark blanket on the bed with a bright children's option.
- Third, tie the rug! But not a simple one, but a special one - in the form of an animal.
Do you think knitting rugs in the shape of animals is a difficult task? Not at all - here only circles, ovals, squares, hexagons, rectangles and other individually connected figures are correctly assembled into a single composition
For example, you can see how to knit a simple rug in the shape of a bear:
- tie the bear's face - a simple circle of a suitable size in a gray shade;
- bear ears - 2 semicircles of white and gray;
- the bear's nose is a white circle, and the triangle is cut out of black suede (later it will be sewn on);
- bear cheeks – 2 circles of pink shade;
- eyelashes - 2 suede parts, which are also later sewn on in the designated places.
The rest of the children's rugs are knitted using the same principle - use your imagination and don't look for complications in the patterns! Everything ingenious is simple!
From packages
A bathroom rug made from plastic bags has many advantages: products made from recycled materials save the family budget and have a positive impact on the environment. This rug will last a long time, since the material from which it is made does not absorb moisture. Garbage bags come in different shades, which means your bathroom rug will delight you with its variety of colors.
The photo shows a rug that is durable and pleasant to the touch, knitted from plastic bags.
What to choose
The choice of pattern and technique depends on skill, availability of free time, and also on the size of the bathroom. For a spacious room, you can take a complex, beautiful pattern of cotton cord.
For a small room, it is better to limit yourself to a simple path or a small “owl”.
A crocheted rug will warm your feet and massage your feet after each bath, and in the morning it will provide you with energy for the whole day. This accessory is suitable for an interior in a classic, rustic or Scandinavian style. You can make it for your home or as a gift to your loved ones.
For experienced craftswomen
Experienced craftswomen can choose to crochet more complex patterns and variations, where most techniques use stitches that are difficult to knit. It is also worth noting the compatibility of complex patterns - pineapples are combined with cones, and cones with floral motifs, and so on. But you should still present several models for crocheting rugs yourself.
Rug based on the "Grand" napkin
You can easily make carpets from crocheted napkin patterns, and here, if necessary, you can increase the size of the future canvas by combining or “wedging” several rows with certain patterns. So the “Pineapple Song” napkin prompted experienced craftswomen to knit based on the existing pattern of the rug, called “Grand”. The new model fits perfectly into the interior design of Provence, Rococo, Baroque, Classicism, the more luxurious Gothic or Empire style. There is nothing complicated in knitting it - the main thing is to use the given patterns with descriptions:
- Cast on 8 chain stitches and close the chain into a ring. Next, continue knitting according to pattern 1. If necessary, you can increase the diameter by repeating the last few rows.
- Next, move on to knitting pattern 2 - here you can also increase the size of the carpet by adding a third row of petals above the pineapples.
- When finished, go to diagram 3 - this will allow you to finish the carpet smoothly and texturedly.
- For edging, pattern 4 is used, consisting of air loops and picot.
The presented model is recommended for independent execution in white, but if necessary, more attractive shades of thread that suit the color scheme of the room are also taken into account. The finished rug is simply soaked in cool water and laid out on a cloth - you can immediately lay it on the floor until completely dry
Pineapple openwork
Next, the rug in question becomes convenient for implementation by those craftswomen who cannot independently enlarge the diagrams to the required dimensions of the canvas. An openwork rug with additional pineapples can be knitted in two ways.
The first method involves starting knitting immediately according to pattern 2, where the required number of air loops is cast, but taking into account the proposed rapport. Further knitting is carried out according to the pattern without deviations.
The second method involves increasing the size of the rug - they begin to knit according to pattern 1 by the required amount, and only then move on to pattern 2, presented above. It turns out that openwork “fans” from a chain of air loops smoothly transition to double crochets in the middle part. In this way, you can “adjust” the dimensions of the finished canvas.
Patchwork bath mat + towel decorations
A bath mat can also be made using the patchwork technique. Sew the upper part of the rug from scraps, and the lower part can be made, for example, from a towel or terry cloth, as in the master classes above. You can also decorate bath towels with mosaic patchwork strips to create a set.
Woven bath mat made from knitted yarn
For this rug, you first need to knit several long strips of the same length. Knitted yarn is preferable, since cotton knitwear is soft and hygroscopic, plus this yarn is so thick that you can knit from it directly with your hands. The function of a loom can be performed by a board with two rows of nails driven in from two opposite edges. Pull a strong thread between the nails and weave a rug, fastening the junctions of the strips with knots.
Crochet rug
This rug can be made from either thread or garbage bags. Let’s look at the last option in more detail, since this is a rather original solution.
To make the product you will need:
- garbage bags;
- several colors;
- hook No. 5.
First you need to weave the yarn itself. To do this, cut the bags into strips so that rings are formed. The thickness of each element should be about 2 cm. To connect the resulting rings to each other, you need to insert one ring into the other and pull the free end of the element through the resulting loop (like a set of threads in the macrame technique).
When the yarn is ready, we move on to knitting. You can knit a simple rectangular fabric, a circle or even an openwork pattern.
Moss
It’s easy to create an eco-style bathroom interior if you get a natural rug made from living moss. It does not require land, and the temperature and humidity conditions and the lack of natural light in the bathroom are the most suitable for such an accessory. It is very easy to make but will take several weeks to grow.
Operating procedure:
- take 3 handfuls of moss such as Racomitrium, Leucobryum without soil;
- place it in a blender, add 100 ml of liquid yogurt or kefir and 2 tsp. hydrogel for growing flowers;
- beat the mixture for 2-5 minutes at minimum speed;
- prepare a porous base, for example, a wooden surface, a product made of liquid concrete, stones;
- apply the moss mixture with a brush to the prepared surface in several layers;
- cover the surface with film and moisten it every day until the moss takes root;
- After 3-5 weeks, when the mat has grown, water it every day.
Areas where moss has not grown can be re-covered with the same mixture.
Rug made of pebbles
For this attribute you will need:
- the simplest rubber mat;
- small pebbles of different colors or plain;
- transparent glue.
Initially, we lay out the drawing on a rubber mat. The stones here can be laid either in even rows or in random order. If your pebbles have different colors, then you can give free rein to your imagination and lay out various patterns, starting with a regular checkerboard and ending with Arabic patterns. After determining the location for each individual element, glue the stones to the base, let it dry thoroughly, after which the product is ready for use.
Other techniques
You can make a knitted bathroom rug on a machine. Example in the photo:
An analogue of such a machine is made from a wooden frame and nails.
Rag rugs are made from braids. The knitted ribbons are first intertwined and then twisted. You can fasten them together with a needle and thread or simply glue them to a rubber base.
You can also knit carpets from ribbons on this homemade cardboard loom with stretched threads:
A homemade bath mat can be a real source of pride. Choose the option you like and be careful in your work. The result will certainly please you!
Crochet
To make such a rug, you need to have at least minimal crocheting skills.
Tools and materials
List of what you need to prepare for work:
- Big hook. Its number must correspond to the size of the yarn or strips of fabric that replace it.
- Thick threads. Woolen ones should be avoided; The best choice would be yarn that contains cotton and acrylic. If they are made of pure synthetics, you need to check them for hygroscopicity (make sure they absorb water quickly enough).
- Scissors.
- Lots of old T-shirts and pajamas if rag strips are used instead of thread.
- Thread and needle.
- Sewing pins.
Manufacturing instructions
The procedure depends on the chosen knitting method.
From old T-shirts
This rug doesn't cost a penny. Moreover, it will help to reuse things that would have been thrown away, which will be, albeit small, but a contribution to preserving the environment on the planet.
Step-by-step manufacturing instructions:
- Cut the T-shirts into strips 2–3 cm wide and sew the ends together to create a long, continuous strip. Wrap it in two balls. To save time, you can cut things into spirals starting from the bottom. The sleeves need to be torn off, and the part where the neckline begins is cut off.
- Wrap a few turns of the strip around your finger and loosely tie the resulting ring with single crochets.
- Take the second ball and lay a strip over the knitted row; so that during further knitting the loops wrap around it and it remains inside the fabric.
- Continue knitting in the round with single crochets until the rug reaches the desired diameter. To prevent the edges of the circle from turning inward, you need to expand the fabric, periodically knitting two loops from one.
In a similar way, you can knit a rug from threads, using a fabric strip only as an internal filler.
