DIY ultrasonic mosquito repeller, diagram and description

Do-it-yourself electronic mosquito repeller using Arduino

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an Arduino-based ultrasonic mosquito repeller. The repellent is shaped like a screen that connects to Arduino, and the frequency of its radiation can be easily changed.

This project is ideal for those who are going outdoors. The device emits sound with a frequency of 31 KHz, which repels mosquitoes. The sound frequency can be adjusted from 23 to 54 KHz, so it can also be used as a dog whistle. Human ears do not recognize these frequencies.

Glue ambush

Most often, no matter how hard you try, mice still appear in the area. How to fight is a painful question, to be sure. One of the most effective methods is glue traps. An ordinary disposable plate is taken, special glue is applied along its rim, bait is placed in the middle, and it is left in the places most attractive to mice. Rodents, following the tempting smell, stick to the edge of the plate - and this is where your determination comes into play. In most cases, they are simply thrown into a bucket of water or beaten with a broom. Of course, in some ways it is cruelty, but war is war. But the pest does not suffer for long.

Advantages of repellers

A homemade repeller is easiest to assemble for radio amateurs or people who have an understanding of modern radio components. Although the simplicity of the design makes it accessible even to an inexperienced user.

  1. Duration of use. It can be used repeatedly without loss of quality.
  2. Cheapness. The cost of such a device is not much different from a purchased cream, but much cheaper than buying a ready-made ultrasound device.
  3. Efficiency.
  4. Numerous positive reviews from users who have personally tested the repellers indicate that the device really works.
  5. Mobility. When creating a device, you can immediately set its dimensions. As a result, it is possible to obtain a repeller of various sizes for mobile use.

It’s not difficult to make such a device; the most important thing is to choose the right circuit.

Criterias of choice

When deciding which device to buy, you should determine the purpose of its use. Stationary models that require a constant connection to the network are suitable for the home; mobile and compact devices that do not take up much space are suitable for the street.

You should first study customer reviews. Some devices don't live up to the promises their manufacturers make.

Attention! There are a lot of fakes on the market - you need to buy devices only from trusted suppliers who have proven themselves on the positive side

Possible applications

DIY mosquito repeller

A device for repelling mosquitoes works on the principle of how insects perceive various sounds. When assembling ultrasonic models, special frequency microcircuits are used. It is inaudible to humans, but extremely unpleasant for mosquitoes.

Repellers imitate sounds that are unpleasant for mosquitoes, which are similar to those of bats, male mosquitoes, and dragonflies. It is precisely such vibrations that females try to avoid, which pose the greatest danger to humans.

There are so many designs for ultrasonic repellers that they can be effectively used both outdoors and indoors. The type of power source of the mosquito repellent device plays a key role in this case.

There are stationary and portable versions of mosquito repellers. For lovers of outdoor activities and travel, small models are suitable, and for home use, you can use the schemes of larger models. Let's look at how to properly make an ultrasonic mosquito repeller.

Comparison of parameters of different models

Model Typhoon LS-200

The power source of this design is mains voltage. But the Tornado OK.01 model operates on an area of up to 50 square meters. m, the frequency range is much wider: from 4 to 40 kHz. This model is powered by three batteries.

User opinions on different versions

Model Cosmos Economic

The lowest rating belongs to the Cosmos Economy device. None of those who had the opportunity to evaluate it in action were satisfied with the results. Although its cost is extremely low, which is very attractive, however, these costs in almost all cases turned out to be impractical.

But, if you really need to purchase an effective ultrasonic mosquito repeller, which device is better today?

It will be difficult to answer this question unequivocally for the same reason that the range of oscillations of ultrasound frequencies emitted by different types of such insects differs. But there are often positive reviews about Tornado brand devices.

Do-it-yourself repeller

If you plan to purchase an expensive model of such a device, you can easily try to assemble it yourself. It will probably cost significantly less. But to create a truly effective design, you will need some experience in such work. A do-it-yourself ultrasonic mosquito repeller can easily be assembled using one of the many schemes offered by the most advanced users in this field. Here is one of them, created in the Splan 4.0 program:

For work, simple, non-scarce elements are used, which can always be found in the right quantity

Particular attention should be paid to the piezo emitter, since it is advisable to purchase an option that creates increased sound pressure during operation. This could be ZP-22

For those who have the opportunity to make a printed circuit board, the following option is offered:

To implement this solution, you will need a ferric chloride solution, with which you will need to etch the tracks on the board, after which they are covered with a protective gel flux. To complete the picture, it is necessary to select a battery of sufficient voltage for comfortable operation of the device for some time.

Watch the video and do it yourself:

When assembling an ultrasonic compact mosquito repeller with your own hands, the most important thing in achieving this task is to create a sufficient level of sound vibration frequency. To adjust this parameter, you should select frequency-setting capacitors C1 and C2 (see diagram). With a fairly large capacity of these elements, the output frequency is within the range of not ultrasonic, but simply sound vibrations.

How to make

DIY ultrasonic mosquito repeller

For assembly, only simple elements will be used, which can always be purchased in specialized stores at an affordable price. The design is based on electronic circuits. They are the heart of the device. You can use one of the most common K555la3 microcircuits or buy another board and make it yourself by etching the tracks on a special canvas.

The PCB manufacturing process includes the following steps:

  1. Print the drawing with the tracks.
  2. Etch the workpiece on the microcircuit in a ferric chloride solution.
  3. Clear.
  4. Cover with flux-gel.
  5. Tin.

After this, you can begin soldering the mosquito repeller according to the chosen scheme.

The ultrasonic invention drawing also includes the following elements:

  1. Power supply. It can be a regular battery.
  2. Sound source.
  3. Bipolar transistors.
  4. Capacitors.
  5. Variable transistor.
  6. Toggle switch for putting the device into operation.

Circuit example

Physicists can make a device that produces sound of a certain frequency. But using their drawings, it will be possible to make an effective device within an hour.

The electronic circuits of the ultrasonic repeller show the chain along which the components of the device should be connected.

The designations on the chip mean the following:

  • R1-R5 – DC resistors with a power of 0.25 W;
  • VD1 – diode to protect the device from short circuit or incorrect connection;
  • BQ1 – emitter producing ultra-frequency sound;
  • VT1-VT2 – bipolar transistors;
  • R6 – variable resistor;
  • C1-C2 – capacitors;
  • S1 – toggle switch for turning on and off.

All components of the drawing are located on a printed circuit board; you will need batteries or rechargeable batteries for outdoor use. Power supply with voltage up to 12 V.

You can adjust the sound frequency using variable resistor R6. A homemade repeller is used indoors or outdoors.

You can use the K555LA3 microcircuit with good frequency characteristics and low electrical energy consumption. There are only 4 parts in the diagram.

The designations are similar. Assembled on a breadboard. The signal is generated by capacitor C1; if it needs to be changed, it is regulated using a variable resistor R6. An ultrasonic repeller can be made in a few hours with minimal knowledge of physics.

If someone is interested in whether it will work or not, you can spend a few hours of your free time making an ultrasonic repeller. But, it is much easier to buy a ready-made device at an affordable price with similar, or even better, action.

When warm days arrive, it's not only good for sunbathing lovers, but also for pesky mosquitoes, which are considered one of the oldest insect species on the planet. Their distant relatives were five centimeters long and did not give peace to the dinosaurs themselves.

Mosquitoes cannot tolerate temperature changes: they hide in frost and extreme heat. The most comfortable temperature for them is +15… +22 degrees. At this time, they become active and annoy people.

It is also known that mosquitoes do not rise high into the air, but fly above the ground. Therefore, residents of apartments located on the lower floors of residential buildings often need means of protection against these annoying insects, including a mobile ultrasonic mosquito repeller.

Reviews

I managed to assemble an ultrasonic mosquito repeller myself. I took the simplest diagram from the Internet. Powered by a regular battery. The entire device cost no more than 150 rubles. We tried to use mosquito repellent outdoors, on a hike, and were satisfied.

My husband built me this thing to get rid of mosquitoes at the dacha. I used it every night throughout the summer and am very pleased.

We assembled the ultrasonic repeller at the beginning of the years according to the k555la3 scheme. Used only during forays onto the river. In order for the device to start working, it was necessary to search for the desired frequency. Why did the values differ in different places, but after setting everything worked?

Thus, even a beginner can build a simple repeller using a transistor. After a short training and dexterity, everyone will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the device.

What you should know

When assembling a device of this type, you should not expect that you will be able to get rid of rodents as soon as the device is connected and starts working.

In kitchens and pantries, where there is something for small pests to profit from, it is worth installing appliances that are more powerful than in other rooms. In such premises, the fight against mice and rats can take even two months. Where there is no food available, the process will go much faster and will take about two weeks.

To combat rodents in unheated basements and storerooms, you need to assemble a device using radio components that can function at subzero temperatures.

Pets can sense some of the frequencies emitted by the repeller. In this case, they feel anxious. In order for pets to stop feeling the effects of ultrasound, it is necessary to change the frequency of vibrations emitted by the device. If such actions do not lead to the desired result, you will have to purchase a factory-made one. True, many devices from domestic manufacturers also operate at frequencies audible by pets, but there are models from foreign brands that do not affect animals.

Each device is capable of protecting a certain area of the room based on its rated power. However, mathematical calculations made using formulas attached to the diagrams may result in an indicator that does not take into account the load of the room with furniture or other obstacles that reflect ultrasound. Therefore, it is necessary to make an adjustment, taking into account the characteristics of the room where the device will operate.

After studying the reviews of people who have already used purchased and homemade devices, you can decide on your choice. Of course, you can make such a device with your own hands using circuit diagrams and necessary elements from a radio store, but this requires certain knowledge.

The penetration of mice and rats into the house becomes a big problem for its inhabitants. Rodents not only spoil food, things and furniture, rats and... There are many ways to combat gnawing pests, ranging from chemicals and ending with folk recipes. An excellent alternative to all these methods can be one, which works by emitting high-frequency sound waves. Among the popular brands, devices stand out. Considering the rather high cost of the device, many craftsmen have learned to assemble an ultrasonic rat and mouse repeller with their own hands.

How to make a mosquito repeller with your own hands

Every year we buy many products that can protect us from mosquitoes. These are all kinds of creams, ointments, sprays, sockets, spirals, etc. However, all this costs a lot of money. To save a little money, we suggest you make your own mosquito repeller using available materials. Without spending a lot of time.

For the first version of the repeller we will need: - matches; - metal plate; - mosquito repellent; - round flat candle; - pliers.

The first option works well at home or outdoors in the complete absence of wind.

We take a metal plate and use pliers to bend it on both sides at an angle of 90°. So that we get some kind of street bench without a back.

Then on one side we fold one edge again. We will get an inclined plane.

After this, we place our curved metal plate on the metal body of a lit candle and place a mosquito repellent plate on top.

For the second version of the repeller we will need:

- a box with a metal lid; - metal plate; — ferrite ring: — mosquito repellent plate; - round flat candle; - pliers; - matches; - glue gun: - bolt and nut.

The second method can be used outdoors even in windy conditions.

We take a metal plate and make a small hole at one end. Then use pliers to bend it. After this, we make another bend on the same side so that our mosquito repellent plate fits on the remaining part of the plate. Once again we bend the ends of the plate so that it fixes it.

We cut out a round hole in the metal lid in the middle, as well as another small one at the edge.

Now we need to glue the ferrite ring onto the lid, aligning it with the large hole. You can use a narrow piece of any plastic pipe as such a ring.

We glue the metal candle stand inside the body of the box exactly in the middle. We insert the candle, close the lid and check how accurately the candle wick fits into the center of the hole. While the glue is not completely dry, center the candle body.

P.S

Sometimes users complain about the device, indicating that it worked at first, but then the mosquitoes stopped responding to it. We already wrote about this phenomenon in the article and recommended buying only a multifunctional device or trying not to use it for a while.

But the best option would be to create an ultrasonic repeller with your own hands, which will save money and give you pleasure from work, and in this case you will be 100% confident in the quality of the device that you created yourself.

And you don’t have to rely on mobile repeller apps that are installed on phones and smartphones. As a rule, this is another “scam”, since the quality of the sound produced by the speaker of a mobile device leaves much to be desired, and it is harmless to mosquitoes.

Operating principle

Manufacturers of ultrasonic repellers claim that the devices act on insects thanks to special sound frequencies. The human ear cannot detect them, but the sounds repel mosquitoes.

A mosquito repellent device produces sound waves similar to the flight vibrations of a dragonfly, a bat, or repeats the sounds of a male mosquito. Females pose a particular danger to humans. They feed on blood to give birth to new offspring. After fertilization, females try to avoid meeting males, so the squeak of a mosquito scares them away.

DIY insect repellers

It is not easy to calculate what kind of ultrasound a homemade device will produce, but, according to users, the design of the ultrasonic mosquito repeller is correct and effective.

Ultrasound devices

Ultrasonic devices are currently the most effective devices that guarantee getting rid of annoying pests. Their advantage lies in the absence of the need for constant maintenance and independent operation throughout the season. It only needs to be activated once, and it will work for the entire season even in the absence of its owners, without requiring replacement of components.

The linear range of such devices includes electromagnetic models that are capable of creating very powerful electromagnetic pulses that cause a panic reaction in pests. They begin to refuse food and reproduction and soon leave the area where the device is installed. The device silently generates waves at varying frequencies, preventing addiction. Within 2-4 weeks the maximum effect is noticeable.

Advantages and disadvantages, features of use

The popularity of various models of repellers is due to their undeniable advantages over similar methods of fighting mosquitoes:

  • ease of handling;
  • health safety;
  • no negative impact on other household appliances;
  • long period of work;
  • low power consumption.

Ease of use

But it was not without its drawbacks. Consumers noted the following disadvantages:

  • high price;
  • the gadget is not always able to repel insects;
  • after turning off the device, insects quickly return;
  • there is a high probability of buying a fake.

To get the desired effect, you should familiarize yourself with the features of using these devices:

  • You need to choose a suitable location for the ultrasonic repeller. Acoustic waves do not penetrate objects, but are reflected from them. If the space in front of the device is cluttered, there is no need to hope for a positive result.
  • To protect against insects outdoors, several devices are connected simultaneously. They are placed around the perimeter of the site so that mosquitoes cannot get closer.
  • Models with several operating modes are suitable for long-term use. Insects become resistant to ultrasound over time, so the frequency of the acoustic waves is periodically changed.

Important! Before using the device, be sure to read the instructions and become familiar with the operating rules.

Plastic predators

You can install plastic owls in your garden. Even unrealistic in appearance they have a frightening effect on smaller birds such as pigeons, sparrows

But to achieve the best results, it is important to constantly move the plastic predators so that the birds do not get used to them and do not lose their vigilance. If the bait is also equipped with sound effects, then it’s even better.

You can also put toy snakes on the beds and flower beds. This way the birds will avoid such dangerous places. The main thing is to warn your household about such a thing so that they don’t get scared.

Tree protection

The main thing when deciding how to get rid of mice in the country is to prevent them from eating your plantings. The most common way to do this is to wrap the trunks of fruit trees with roofing material, several layers of cellophane or roofing felt. The lower edge should rest against the ground (or, even better, be dug into it), and the upper edge should significantly exceed the possible snow level.

A simpler and more feasible option is to wrap the trunks in nylon stockings or tights, or cut up sugar bags. You can also use plastic bottles if the trees are not too old and the volume of these containers is sufficient. If there are birch groves nearby, you can tear up old birch bark and wrap tree trunks with it; rodents don’t like it either. In any case, all “wrapping” (except for birch bark, which is still a natural material) must be removed with the arrival of spring so that the trunks do not rot or rot.

A good option would be to coat the trees with clay mixed with cow dung and creolin. The first two components are taken one to one, the last - in a very small amount (only 100 g per 8 kg of mixture).

Discourage sitting down

How to get rid of magpies on your property? Deprive them of the opportunity to rest! Birds are not constantly in flight; they need time to rest, sleep, clean their feathers, and just a place from where they can observe what is happening in the area. Magpies are very curious birds, and the lack of places to perch will greatly stress them out. What can I use?

  1. Install special spikes on parapets, roof ridges, fences, and so on. The pitches of the spikes are different, and in the store the seller will recommend those that are suitable for size forty. Instead of spikes, you can use a cheaper method - pull the wire.
  2. Stretch mesh along flat roofs. Specially designed bird nets are kept in tension at all times, preventing them from perching.
  3. Attach old films from audio and video cassettes to the crowns of trees, bushes and other surfaces where birds like to land. Birds will see the constant movement of iridescent snakes, which also rustle, and will try to avoid these places.

What harm do birds cause to households?

It’s not for nothing that many people make an ultrasonic bird repeller with their own hands, the diagram of which is given below. A visit by feathered guests to a summer cottage, vegetable garden, or garden sometimes becomes a disaster.

Harm to the farm is caused by pichugas in the summer-autumn period, when the berries are ripening. Voracious blackbirds, having flown as a family to a currant bush or cherry tree, easily devour the ripe crop.

Other troubles are discovered after the arrival of uninvited guests:

In the morning, waking up early, the birds sit on the roofs, scream, coo, not allowing them to sleep peacefully. A self-made sonic bird repeller helps scare away visiting guests from your home or dacha. Having a simple device on your farm, you don’t have to sit behind the barn with a slingshot to periodically scare away pests.

Assembling an ultrasonic repeller yourself

Many people make bird repellers for their dachas at home. Available materials are used. Some people make products from plastic bottles, others install huge stuffed animals that resemble evil housewives. In vegetable gardens, you can find a bird repeller made from discs, which you also make yourself.

The effectiveness of such frightening devices is not high enough: cunning birds quickly get used to the frightening devices and cease to be afraid. Modern home-grown craftsmen have thought about how to make a bird repeller with their own hands - so that it turns out to be as effective as possible. Unique homemade devices have appeared. We invite you to meet one.

It’s worth mentioning right away that not everyone can make an acoustic or ultrasonic bird repeller with their own hands, but only selected craftsmen who can work with a soldering iron and understand circuits. Those who are not good at technology and have not yet learned how to handle a soldering iron should not be upset. It is suggested that in your spare time you can build a magpie and crow repeller with your own hands from balloons.

Components to collect

To make a sound bird repeller with your own hands, the diagram is proposed below. But first you need to purchase the necessary components. A real craftsman will find them at home; someone will have to purchase the missing parts in the store.

Having a set of parts, you will have to think about what to attach them to so that the bird repeller is assembled not for one day, but for long-term use. Fiberglass is ideal for the base. It is convenient to attach parts to it. Although someone will find an old board in the workshop that will perfectly serve as a base.

Repeller collection

A good, original device will turn out if you use the circuit. In addition to the parts, you will have to prepare a soldering iron and solder.

13 prepared elements are connected into one circuit. Each person is assigned to a designated place.

A diagram that shows the location of all five resistors, which serve to limit the current and reduce the voltage, helps you assemble a sonic bird repeller with your own hands. Then a variable resistor is installed that determines the frequency of the emitted ultrasound needed to scare away birds. A diode is attached next to the toggle switch if the technician assumes its presence in the device.

After studying the instructions, you assemble an electronic bird repeller with your own hands, the photo of which is given below.

Not everyone will decide to take such a crucial step: to assemble a clever device in a makeshift environment. It is much easier than making an electronic bird repeller with your own hands, buying a ready-made device. It comes with a guarantee. It never fails and works properly.

Functions of bioacoustic repellent systems

A bioacoustic bird repellent system is a gentle way to protect crops from birds. It can emit loud signals or ultrasound:

  • Sonic bioacoustic repellers are triggered when guests arrive. After the sensor is triggered, an alarm signal is activated - the sound of predators, a warning about danger, etc. Until recently, such installations were located at airports.
  • Ultrasound devices. The sound waves are inaudible to humans and domestic animals, but affect winged animals. A small installation creates an ultrasound track that birds hear and try to stay away from its area of effect.

The function of both devices is the same - to scare away birds from the area where the crop is ripening.

EcoSniper AR-115

Country of origin: China. Effectively protects against mosquitoes and midges. Intended for work in stationary conditions, while being very economical.

The principle of operation of the device is the effect of ultrasound on the nervous system of mosquitoes and midges. The operation of the device is indicated by a light indicator. Capable of protecting a room up to 50 square meters.

The repeller can be used both for its intended purpose and as a night light. The main thing is to make sure that there are no objects near the ultrasound source that could serve as an obstacle limiting the propagation of ultrasonic waves.

The ultrasonic repeller is sold both online and in other retail outlets. The approximate cost of the repeller is about 1200 rubles.

Primitive but very effective bottle traps

Empty drink containers are often used to catch insects and even small rodents. A mosquito trap made from a plastic bottle will not decorate the interior of an apartment, but it will reduce the number of insects significantly.

Bait with yeast

To make a catching device, you will need a 1.5-2 liter bottle, a glass of water, a pinch of sugar and 1 g of dry baker's yeast. The process consists of several stages:

  1. Use a knife or scissors to cut off the neck of the plastic container. There is no need to throw in the cut part - it will still be needed.
  2. Dissolve sugar in water. To do this, it is advisable to heat the liquid. Cool the resulting syrup to 35-40°C and pour into a prepared plastic container. To catch flies and wasps, sugar is replaced with sweet jam.
  3. Pour yeast into the sweet solution. These can be baked, granulated, dry. Without yeast, fermentation will not begin.
  4. Place the cut top into the bottle with the neck down to form an analogue of a funnel, secure with tape or tape.
  5. Wrap the trap in dark rags or paper. Place in a place where mosquito activity is observed, avoiding direct sunlight.

Yeast trap A homemade trap does not lose its properties for 2 weeks. After this period, the syrup needs to be replaced. The operating principle of the device is very simple. In essence, this is a primitive mosquito trap using carbon dioxide. During the fermentation process, carbon dioxide is released, which attracts flying blood-sucking individuals. Once in a funnel, they cannot get out of it.

Fishing with sunflower oil

To build the structure, you will need a plastic container, a few tablespoons of vegetable oil, or just an empty bottle of sunflower oil. Trap manufacturing technology:

  • cut off the top of the bottle;
  • generously lubricate the walls of the vessel with vegetable oil;
  • using a sharp object, make holes through which you can stretch the ropes;
  • hang mosquito traps in places where insects accumulate, preferably under light sources: lamps, lanterns.

The concept of this trapping device is not entirely clear. Vegetable oil is not capable of acting as a bait for mosquitoes. It is likely that insects attracted by light accidentally fall into the container, and after coming into contact with vegetable oil, they temporarily lose their flight abilities. You can only check the effectiveness of a trap through your own experience.

Printed circuit board

Due to the impossibility of manufacturing a printed circuit board for a mole repeller using chemical technology, a mechanical method was used to remove sections of copper foil from foiled fiberglass laminate.

The location of radio components on the printed circuit board of the mole repeller is shown in the photo below.

The appearance of the printed circuit board for manufacturing by photochemical method and the location of radioelements is shown in the photograph below.

The board can be made from 1.5 mm thick fiberglass foil on one side.

A site visitor, who introduced himself as San Sanych, kindly provided his version of a rodent repeller, created in a graphic editor for PCB layout Sprint-Layout 3.0R, for which many thanks to him.
