#facts | How does a manual phone charger work?

Hi all.! Every home needs a generator to charge their phone. If there is a power outage, while fishing or mushroom picking, you will always be in touch.

So I took out a 6 volt generator with a charging unit from a broken flashlight, this unit charged a NI-MH 3.6 volt battery, so the unit is ideal for lithium.

Everyone has at least once experienced their phone being completely discharged and unable to charge it. The reason may be either the lights are turned off or the lack of an outlet. Being left without communication, music, or the Internet, you feel like you have no hands. But modern scientists have found 10 ways to easily charge your phone without a charger.

Charging pan

Japanese scientists have developed a special saucepan that can be used to charge a smartphone.

Even a fire is suitable for such a charger as a heat source.

For tourists and travelers, such a charger will become an indispensable thing.

Another positive feature is that the time of day or weather does not matter for the operation of this charger.

DIY generator. Gasoline 25kW 220V AC + 400V DC. Part 1

DIY generator to power an electric car and a country house Friends, hello everyone. Anyone who follows our channel knows that we have been creating a powerful electric buggy for almost the entire year. And in the fall the first combat tests were carried out. If anyone is interested, you can read here Homemade electric buggy.

In parallel with the buggy, we started a second project. This is a power generator project called Move&Move.

What are his main tasks:

  1. Work as an emergency generator for a country house. AC operation.
  2. Works as a charger for electric vehicles with the ability to charge on the go. DC operation.

2-3 times a year, almost every owner of an electric car needs to travel long distances. It is very convenient to have such a generator on a trailer (trailer) and go anywhere without thinking about charging stations. It will be very useful for Tesla owners to rent such a generator when traveling long distances, for example. Unlike conventional generators, it will allow you to immediately output direct current to greatly speed up charging.

  3. Experiments with high voltages of the order of a million volts in remote, unpopulated areas. Tesla Coil.
  4. Gaining experience in the development of high power electric generators.

To produce electric current we need to convert one type of energy into another.

The basis was the internal combustion engine HR12DE from Nissan. It met several search criteria at once. Since in the future it is planned to install this self-made generator on a rolling stock, the engine had to be light and compact. At the same time, it should have low fuel consumption throughout the entire rev range. And finally, the engine itself had to have a low price of up to 20 thousand rubles (at the end of 2021).

So:

The Nissan HR12DE internal combustion engine was released in 2010 by Nissan Motors. Has 3 cylinders and 12 valves. The volume of this engine is 1.2 liters. In a piston system, the piston diameter is 78 millimeters and its stroke is 83.6 millimeters. The fuel injection system is Double Over Head Camshaft (DOHC). Such a system predetermines the installation of two camshafts in the cylinder head (cylinder head). Such engine manufacturing technologies made it possible to achieve a fairly strong reduction in noise and obtain a power of 79 horsepower and a torque of 108 Nm. The engine is quite lightweight: 60 kilograms (naked engine weight).

HR12DE
Volume, cubic cm 1200
Gas distribution system DOHC, 12-valve, 2-cam
Power, hp (kW) at rpm 79 (58) / 6000
Torque, kg*m (N*m) at rpm. 106 (11) / 4400
engine's type 3-cylinder, 12-valve, DOHC, liquid cooled
Fuel used Gasoline Regular (AI-92, AI-95)
Fuel consumption (mixed mode) 6,1

Next, the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy occurs by rotating through the flywheel of the generator from the box of the electric version of the Nissan Note. The engine itself had to be modified a little to get the gearbox bell to fit properly. Moreover, there are 2 electric motors installed in the box. One is power, and the second is auxiliary at 50 kW (pictured on the right). This is the auxiliary one we need. The power one will be dismantled and put on a shelf, waiting in the wings.

DIY electric motor for generator

At the output, the generator produces 3 high-frequency phases of about 1 kHz, depending on the speed at which the internal combustion engine reaches.

The generator itself fits into the gearbox housing.

Next, the alternating high-frequency voltage is supplied to the rectifier unit. An IGBT module from Toyota Aqua with a power of up to 50 kW was used as a rectifier module.

After which the rectified voltage is supplied to the DC-DC converter, also from a Toyota Aqua with a power of 27 kW.

The converter itself had to be heavily redesigned. At the output we have a well-stabilized voltage of 400V DC. And those outputs that were previously used to connect electric motors can now be used to connect a 220V 50 Hz load.

Mechanical charger

Every person has a source of energy, and to obtain it you do not need to use any unusual devices.

All you need is the simplest mechanical charger.

If you turn the handle of such a device for two minutes, you will be able to make a short call.

And to fully charge the phone, you will need to turn the handle for more than one hour.

Air Mask

This mask is a miniature windmill.

Although wearing such a mask a person will look like the villain Bane from the film “The Dark Knight”, he will have a real opportunity to charge his phone.

The mask itself contains small turbines that are powered by human breathing.

Turbines are capable of generating a sufficient amount of energy, which, when transferred to the phone battery, charges it.

Windmill for charging

A Dutch company has created a small windmill that can be combined with a phone such as an iPhone.

If you have a good and continuous wind, the gadget can charge in just six hours.

Well, if you don’t have that much time, then get on a motorcycle or in a car and put this mini-generator out the window. It will charge much faster.

Number of revolutions

For generators, there are graphs or tables that relate the output current to the rotor speed. Some models reach rated power at much lower rpm than others. The lower the engine speed at full generator output, the more suitable it is for charging batteries at idle.

Standard engine pulleys and heavy-duty generator pulleys sometimes prevent them from delivering full power within the desired rpm range. This is due to the fact that the pulleys are designed for car engines operating at 2500 - 3500 rpm, and when charging batteries at idle, the engine speed is 700 - 1000 rpm. Since engines and their operating modes on boats and yachts differ, the size of the generator pulley must be selected individually using the following procedure:

  1. Determine what engine speed should correspond to the maximum generator power
  2. Find the maximum allowable rpm of the generator (usually 10,000 rpm).
  3. Determine the minimum engine speed for normal use (or the engine speed for charging batteries and running the refrigerator if the engine is most often used for these purposes when parked)
  4. Select the alternator pulley to achieve the maximum power required at the selected minimum engine speed. Check that the generator does not exceed the permissible rotation speed at maximum engine speed. If the generator rotor exceeds the permissible rotation speed, change the gear ratio so that the maximum generator speed is achieved at maximum engine speed.

Example:

The yacht is equipped with a generator with a rated current of 130 amperes. Maximum power required 100 amps (77% of rated power). The generator produces 100 amps at 3000 rpm. The maximum safe operating speed is 10,000 rpm. The boat spends most of its time at anchor. When parked, the engine idles at 1000 rpm to charge the batteries.

In order for the generator rotor to rotate at 3,000 rpm at engine idle speed, the gear ratio of the pulleys must be 3: 1. The maximum engine speed is also 3,000 rpm. At these speeds, the generator speed will be 9000 rpm, which is within safe operating limits.

Charging T-shirt

At a music festival in England in 2011, spectators were presented with a unique charger T-shirt.

The T-shirt is no different from a regular T-shirt, except that it is made not from ordinary fabric, but with the addition of a piezoelectric film.

This film absorbs vibrations from music and turns them into electrical charge.

By the way, not only music, but also a person’s voice, the noise of a car, or the street can become a source of energy.

Hand generator

As it turns out, our hands are a good source of energy.

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have designed a generator that is activated by touch.

The compact size of the generator allows you to easily insert it into your phone and use the energy obtained from touching your fingers on the display to charge the device.

The generated energy is generated by the frictional force between two polymer layers. This energy will be enough to fully charge the phone.

Crazy and even dangerous “ideas” from the Internet - don’t do that!

And finally, some know-how on maintaining and charging smartphone batteries found on the Internet. Let’s try to figure out how effective they are and, most importantly, how safe they are.

We pierce

The issue, according to many Bolgers, can be resolved in an elementary way. Carefully pierce the battery case, compress it with pliers (alternatively, press it with a brick, compress it with a clamp, etc.) so that the battery takes on a normal geometric shape, and seal the hole.

How effective is this “treatment”? Absolutely ineffective. We eliminate the effect, not the cause. It’s not just that the battery is swollen - there’s clearly something wrong with it. It is better to get rid of such a power source.

Regarding safety. By piercing the battery case, we risk (and this risk is very high) causing an internal short circuit and turning the battery into a thermite bomb that will burn even under water. And if the battery not only catches fire, but explodes, then we will definitely be left without eyes.

Ask a Question

Curious. Some pro-piercing bloggers recommend (quote): “Before piercing, find a non-flammable material that can cover the flame. This way you will block the access of oxygen and eliminate the combustion process.” And laughter and sin...

We arrange a short circuit

This method, according to some, allows you to restore battery capacity if it has decreased due to age. Sometimes it is supposedly possible to increase the capacity by 20 (!) percent. So, remove the controller from the battery and short-circuit the battery contacts for 3-4 seconds. Ready. Let's collect and rejoice.

How effective is this treatment? It is not only ineffective, but, on the contrary, will cause the opposite effect. We will lose everything we had. This method is only suitable if we need to make a thermite bomb quickly and with minimal effort. A current shock during a short circuit will cause an internal short circuit of the battery with all the ensuing consequences - see the animation above.

Even if the battery does not explode immediately, there is a high probability that it will happen in an hour/week/month. And God forbid that only the smartphone is damaged.

Put it in the refrigerator

This method of restoring capacity (still by the same 20%) involves placing the battery in the freezer for 6 hours (as an option - for 2 hours, a day, etc.). One of the bloggers suggesting this writes (quote): “As mentioned above, cold is tolerated much better by the battery than high temperatures, so a number of experts recommend preventive maintenance of the device using cold.”

Dear fabulist, “bears it much better” and “rejoices very much” - is there a difference? By freezing the battery to a decent minus, we will simply kill it or, at best, shorten its service life. There can be no talk of any increase in capacity. Where will it come from? Will Santa Claus give you a ride on reindeer?

We double the resource

It would seem, how? Elementary Watson. We discharge the battery not to zero, but to 50%, and the number of charge/discharge cycles doubles.

I’ll say more on my own behalf. If you discharge the battery not to zero, but to 99%, then the number of charge/discharge cycles will increase 100 times. And this is true, since the cycle is called full discharge/full charge. By discharging the battery to half and charging it to 100%, you complete half the cycle. So don’t engage in tyranny, it’s both stupid and inconvenient.
