Step-by-step instruction
The most recognizable parts of a cowboy costume are the chaps (or chaps), vest and hat. The neckerchief and holster are additional elements and are not included in all looks.
Sewing overlays for jeans (chaps)
These jeans overlays can be made from faux leather or suede.
Cut:
- The fabric is folded 4 times (the front side of the material is inside).
- Jeans are placed on top of the material in an unfolded state (one pant leg and the top of the product will be outlined).
- The jeans are outlined with chalk, +7 cm is added to the outer side seam (of which 1-1.5 cm is for allowances), only allowances are added to the bottom and crotch seams.
- The belt line (top and bottom) and the starting point of the crotch seam are marked separately.
- 10-15 cm is retreated from the beginning of the belt line; point A is placed here.
- Point A is connected to the starting point of the crotch seam.
- 8 cm is laid upward from the top line of the belt, a rectangle is drawn (its width can be any, the average value is 10 cm).
- The material is cut out.
Sewing:
- Four cut blanks are folded in pairs facing inward.
- The crotch seam is stitched.
- Between the two blanks, on the side of the outer side seam, a fringed braid is inserted (it can decorate only the bottom of the chaps or run along the entire length).

Steps:
- The children's shirt (T-shirt) and fabric are folded in half, face inward, and the fold lines are aligned.
- The shirt is outlined with chalk, excluding the sleeve area.
- The lower and upper parts of the armhole are connected by a concave semi-oval line.
- Allowances (1-1.5 cm) are added and the material is cut out.
- One cut piece is folded in half (wrong side out).
- From the bottom point of the resulting fold line, 5 cm are laid up and to the left, two points are connected.
- From the top point of the fold line, 10-15 cm are laid down, 5-7 cm to the left, the points are connected.
- The front part is cut into two parts, excess material is cut off.
- The back of the vest is alternately folded with the two front parts, the side and shoulder seams are sewn together.
- All cuts (if necessary) are turned over to the reverse side by 1 cm and stitched.
The vest is ready, all that remains is to decorate it with fringe. To do this, 10 cm are laid down from the shoulder seam. A straight line is drawn through the resulting point, onto which the braid is sewn on top.

Making a cowboy hat
Real cowboys only wear Stetson hats. If such a headdress is in the wardrobe of a father or grandfather, great; if not, then you will have to try a little and create a unique hat for the young cowboy yourself.
Steps:
- The paper pattern is transferred to the material, allowances of 1-1.5 cm are added, and the fabric is cut out. The result is 4 parts (bottom, crown and two hat brims).
- The parts are duplicated with interlining fabric.
- The brim is folded in half, and darts 2-3 cm deep are drawn on both fold lines. This is necessary so that the brim of the headdress “stands.”
- The darts are cut out and the margins are sewn together by machine.
- The resulting seams are tapped with a heavy object, for example a hammer - this will make them softer - and unraveled.
- The two parts of the fields are folded together (wrong side out) and stitched together, the workpiece is turned inside out.
- The edges of the crown are connected with a sewing line, the seam is tapped, softened and unstitched. The detail is turned on its face.
- A bottom is placed on top of the crown, which is first pinned or manually secured with thread, and only then stitched from the inside using a machine.
- The resulting seam is tapped, softened and unstitched.
- The hat brim is sewn to the bottom of the crown. The resulting seam can also be softened and stitched.

Making a neck bandana
If the adult family members don’t have a suitable neckerchief in their closet, then you can literally make a children’s bandana for a cowboy costume in just 3 steps. It should not match the color of the vest or pants.
Steps:
- The material is spread on a hard surface.
- The top left edge of the fabric is pulled down until it reaches the bottom edge.
- The resulting triangle of fabric is cut from the main fabric cut.
If the edges of the bandana look sloppy, they can be hemmed by 1 cm. If the neck accessory is large, it can be folded in half and cut along the fold line.
Accessories
What could a cowboy costume look like? Photos of kids in similar outfits are very different. After all, there is room for imagination here. So, special attention should be paid to the baby’s accessories. It is thanks to them that the costume can look original.
- Neckerchief. It can be anything: plain or painted, checkered or striped. The main thing is that it matches the suit. It is also worth pointing out that a scarf can stand out against the background of a suit, being a bright detail that will attract attention to the child.
- A New Year's cowboy costume also requires a pistol and a holster. If everything is clear with a toy weapon, it is easy to find and buy, then most likely you will have to sew a holster yourself. So, for this you need to take black leather. A holster is a simple pocket for a pistol, which may not even have a bottom. It is necessary to sew the fabric on the sides so that the weapon can be comfortably placed in it. This part is attached to the child’s belt with straps specially made for this purpose.
- You also need to put a leather belt in your baby’s pants. This will be not only a detail of clothing, but also an element of costume decoration.

When preparing a cowboy costume with your own hands, you must also make sure that the child has a cowboy hat, it’s good if it’s black. It must have margins. You can either buy it in a store or make it yourself from cardboard or papier-mâché. Cap details:

Vest
The cowboy costume also consists of a checkered shirt and vest. And if there are no problems with the first item of clothing, it will not be difficult to buy such a shirt, but you will still have to sew the vest yourself. This is not difficult to do. The easiest way is to take a vest suitable for the baby’s size as a sample and cut the fabric based on it. It will consist of three main parts: the back (a single part) and two front parts (they will be the same, but mirrored). If you wish, you can add fringe along the back of the vest: cut the part into pieces and simply sew it on. You can do the same with the front parts: the fringe is sewn in at the level of the chest pockets. To decorate the vest, you can sew on a sheriff's star (made of golden-colored fabric).

And lastly: a real cowboy wears only special cowboy boots. But since most children's parties are held indoors, such shoes can be replaced with more comfortable sandals or soft sneakers.

A cowboy costume also requires shoes. Here again there are many options. If the child is very small, you can use ordinary black Czech shoes as shoes (the children's costume should be as comfortable as possible). If the child is already extremely mature, boots will be needed. Ideal if they come with pointed socks. If there is nothing suitable, you can wear black rubber boots, having previously decorated them with leather overlays. When creating a cowboy costume for a boy yourself, you can also make boots from old sneakers that are comfortable for a child to wear. So, for this you will need to sew a boot that fits completely over the shoes. For this, it is best to take suede. The boot itself will consist of two parts: the main one (which covers most of the leg) and the front one. The parts are sewn from the middle of the foot to the instep line. Shoes can be decorated using special paints by painting a sheriff's star on them.

So, let's create a cowboy costume with our own hands. The work must begin with the selection of materials. So, it’s ideal if you can get the skin. It is good if it is brown, light brown or red. As an alternative, you can use leatherette or suede. However, the suit can also be entirely denim. In this case, you will need old denim pants from an adult, from which you can make a vest and cowboy pants for your little hero.
Shoes
The classic shoe for a cowboy is a tall boot with a top that covers both the ankle and ankle. They have a narrow toe, slightly curved upward - this made it convenient to get into the stirrup even after the man drank several shots of whiskey in the saloon. They have low, stable heels - this is not only good for posture, but also allows you to stay more firmly in the saddle due to the support in the stirrup. The part that covers the foot is tightly fitted, but the boot is wide for better ventilation (it was hot in the Wild West in the summer, and no one wanted to sweat). The material is exclusively genuine leather, soft and with a specific brown color. Jewelry was not meant, since it is difficult to chase a stray cow or prance on a horse without getting caught in a lace or buckle. The only thing allowed was a pattern neatly stitched with bright threads. Cowboy boots cannot be replaced in a carnival costume. But in an everyday look, to which you just want to add a slight touch of romance, you can wear leather boots or even comfortable sandals made of the same leather instead.

Regardless of the fact that the time of cowboys is passing, the color scheme always remains at its level.

The elements of a cowboy outfit are so distinctive and original that they should not be combined with other styles, so jewelry in an ethnic style is suitable for a girl: earrings made of feathers or coins, rings and bone bracelets, a jacket or poncho made of natural wool.

Making a hat from paper or cardboard is not difficult: the material holds its shape well, as befits a real cowboy’s headdress, and the colors of craft sheets or packaging cardboard match the style of the beige-sand outfits of cowboys.
