A snood is a scarf that closes into a ring. Has been in fashion trends since 2015–2016. If you add interesting elements when sewing this product yourself, then each time you get a more interesting and original solution.
There are many options on how to sew a snood scarf with your own hands. For example, instead of knitted knitted fabric, you can use lace. This will be an option not for winter, but for autumn. It will be a good combination with a jacket.
Why make a hat out of a scarf?
Some may ask, why not go to the store and buy a new hat? Perhaps many will do so, but the question is different. Using, for example, an out-of-fashion scarf to make a hat has its advantages, which inspire the needlewoman to be creative.
- Firstly, if the accessory is knitted from wool, then after a certain time of use, the yarn becomes much softer and more pleasant to the touch.
- Secondly, the needlewoman is firmly confident in the quality of the material from which the accessory is made, so she can easily use it for a children’s hat.
- Thirdly, the product, even after numerous washes, has not lost its shape and color - this means that the hat will be worn for a long time and will serve faithfully.
Now let's take a closer look at three options to make a scarf hat.
How to sew an original snood scarf with your own hands
Can add a stylish and fashionable item to your wardrobe. We will remake an old jacket into a warm, stylish snood scarf with a button closure. For this we need:
- a jacket you don't wear;
- scissors;
- needle;
- matching threads;
- sewing machine.
Let's get started:
- Cut off the top part of the jacket just below the armhole.
- We process the cut with a zigzag seam or overlock.
- After processing, we turn the edge inside out and hem it by machine.
- The original snood is ready!
Progress
We chop off the side parts of the hood from the central one.
If you use knitted fabric for the main parts, be sure to process them with an overlock or zigzag stitch on a machine.
We baste and sew on the machine parts both from the main fabric and from the insulation. Iron all seams. On a hood made of lining fabric, we sew a loop along the line of sewing into the neck, so that it is convenient to use the hood.
We attach a piece for the back to the hood made of the main fabric. Iron the seam.
We will carry out the same operation with a hood made of lining fabric. Iron the seam.
We will finish the details of the scarf along the entire perimeter with bias tape in the same tone from the face to the back.
In the corners, re-stitch the binding diagonally.
Having folded the binding to the wrong side, we stitch it 0.1 cm. The binding is not visible on the face, but the stitching seam is visible.
We will overlock the side of the scarf that you will sew into the hood, and then you can add folds or sew it on a machine so that the scarf has the width you need. If you immediately cut out the details of the scarf of the required width, then you can skip this step.
Place the scarf pieces in the marked places and baste them.
How to sew a knitted snood
In order to sew the edges of the snood with an invisible seam, you need to take the appropriate threads. To prevent the thread from breaking during stitching, its length should not exceed 40-45 cm. The seam is applied with even ties, and there is no need to tighten the thread too much to prevent wrinkles from forming.
The order of sewing knitted parts:
- The edges of the finished knitted product must be steamed with an iron and pinned together.
- Run a basting stitch before proceeding with the final stitching.
- Try the product on.
After successful fitting, sew the product with the seam shown in the figure. For a master class on knitting knitted items, watch the video below.
Step-by-step master class
The finished snood scarf measures 36 cm by 152 cm.
Step 1: cut out the details
We cut out and cut out two identical blanks from lace fabric and knitwear - strips of 18x152 cm. Moreover, they must be the same length and width.
First of all, we make the knitted part of the snood.
Step 2: sew on the border
Then we make the outer border. To do this, we sew the braid in a circle.
We do the same with the lace part and make the second outer border with braid.
What accessories to combine the snood with?
Like regular scarves, snoods can be combined with other practical accessories. The most common is a hat. Often a snood and a hat are purchased as a set in the same color scheme. But this is the exception rather than the rule. It is popular to “dilute” the same color. For example, a black down jacket + a blue hat + a gray snood. It is also fashionable to select gloves and mittens to match one element of the accessories: to match the scarf or hat. But there are no restrictions here either.
Wearing a snood with a hat
Current and irreplaceable accessories are hand luggage. Small shoulder bags and backpacks are popular for girls. Older women cannot imagine their look without practical bags. Snoods can easily be combined with all types of bags and backpacks. The main task is to maintain a single style in the image.
Wearing a snood with bags
In addition to hand luggage, snoods are combined with other popular accessories: suspenders, belts, leggings (if we are talking about winter wear).
What is snood and why is it so loved?
On sale you can find men's, women's and even children's models. They are combined with outerwear - a coat, jacket, cardigan, or worn under a shirt and tunic. With the help of such a snood you can combine a sports skirt and an elegant jacket into a harmonious combination. This is why they love this stylish scarf - for its versatility.
Plus, this is the fastest and most effective way to add zest to an image and refresh a boring outfit. A snood can also be knitted, however, it is several times faster to sew, since even warm woolen fabrics that resemble hand-knitting are available for sale.

Thank you very much for your attention and time. I was able to download two free patterns, hopefully in my size. Since childhood, I sewed a lot and easily, now I’m trying to overcome acquired fears and complexes in order to return to my favorite pastime. I really hope that with your help I can get through... By the way, using a pattern that my niece bought in this program, I sewed her an excellent sundress, now I’m learning the basics for myself. Thank you, I hope for cooperation. Sincerely..

Tips from needlewomen
If a novice needlewoman doesn’t know how to sew at all or doesn’t have a sewing machine yet, but really wants to create a voluminous fabric scarf with her own hands, there are two options. Both of them allow you to get an exclusive item.
Flannel scarf
Quite a fashionable wardrobe item that can be beautifully placed on the neck. And there is no need to sew such a snood scarf at all.
What you need: a square meter of flannel and scissors.
Work algorithm:
- Lay out the fabric, measure out a square with sides of 1*1 m and carefully cut.
- Pull the threads along the edges to make the fringe the desired length.
Snood from a scarf
You can create such an interesting scarf with your own hands from an ordinary checkered scarf and yarn of two colors, if the basics of crochet are familiar to a novice craftswoman.
You will need: a scarf, yarn of two colors, a hook, scissors.
Get to work:
- Take a scarf and cut it diagonally into 4 pieces.
- Sew the sides of the triangles and tie them with single crochets, as in the photo.
- Connect the parts according to the diagram in the photo.
- You don’t have to sew it into a ring and leave it as a stole.
- Or sew it and get a full-fledged snood.
Simple models
The simplest but most effective patterns are knitted on ring needles. The number of loops is calculated based on the fact that the snood is knitted crosswise in one piece. The length of the panel must be divided by 10 and multiplied by the number of loops in a 10 cm sample.
There is no need to add edge loops - they will not be needed. Before tying a snood, read the description carefully.
The simplest and most universal patterns are elastic bands: 1x1; 2x2; 3x1. Rapport (length of one pattern) – respectively 2; 4; 4 loops.
How to form a tube scarf?
The tube scarf, or snood in other words, is very popular now. However, you can tie a regular scarf in this way without much effort. To do this, you need to choose a wide stole or scarf.
To imitate a snood scarf you need:
- form from a scarf, folding it in half;
- lightly roll the resulting triangle into a rope;
- throw it around the neck and tie a knot in the back of the head;
- Wrap the loose ends around the neck 1 or 2 times and hide them in front under the fabric of the scarf.
You can experiment endlessly with scarves and scarves. Recently, there has been a tendency not to tie a scarf at all, but to place it loosely around the neck.
Now you know exactly the most beautiful and stylish ways to tie scarves, shawls and stoles both on the head, on the neck and over the coat.
Making the task more difficult
Several of the most popular knitted snood models with descriptions are given below.
For snoods, it is better to choose double-sided patterns - then you will not have to constantly monitor the correct placement of the front side of the scarf.
“Putanka”, “rice”, “checkerboard” and other double-sided patterns look impressive in large scarves. Patent and semi-patent elastic with removed loops give the snood volume.
If Irish patterns (a combination of several types of braids) are chosen for the snood, then you should keep in mind that the braids have the effect of an elastic band and narrow the fabric. Therefore, it is necessary to make the canvas wider than calculated from the steamed sample.
The edges of the knitted pipe can be crocheted with scallops. This simple decoration will protect the edges from rubbing and at the same time decorate the snood. Crocheted fringe looks elegant.
