How to make a mask out of paper: master class on creating scary, funny, voluminous, large and small origami masks

Materials for masks

Carnival masks in Venice were exquisite. They were made from expensive fabrics, decorated with precious stones, and trimmed with feathers and fur.

In the modern world, you can find well-established accessories, but papier-mâché variations, lace masks, and pieces made of feathers and felt are very popular. They are for sale, but you can create a stylish piece at home using scrap materials.

Breath of Venice

As a basis for a chic Venetian mask, buy a finished product made of plaster or plastic. Variations made of leather or papier-mâché are also suitable.

If you make the base yourself, then you need an assistant who will have to “work” as a mannequin. His face will be the base for creating the mask. Apply a thick layer of Vaseline and a plaster bandage to your face. You cannot move until the plaster hardens. It is better for the mask master himself to wear rubber gloves. It usually takes about a quarter of an hour to harden. When the base is removed, it must be allowed to harden on a flat surface.

Now it's all about the decor? Not at all! First, outline the contours of the mask with a marker and remove all excess. It is most convenient to cut the mask using a woodworking machine. The easiest way to make eye holes is with a drill. The mask must be smoothed, for which it is covered with adhesive tape and putty. Next, apply a coat of white paint and sand. Now it's time to decorate. Apply patterns with paints and accent the desired areas with beads. Attach black tape to the sides to put the mask on yourself.

Current masks

To choose an option, we will find out the existing types of these decorative masterpieces. A small selection is presented here.

DIY paper masks

For the simplest crafts for games and events, a little preparation is required. After all, the item must fit the size of the person wearing it.

In order for the brainchild to please its owner for a long time, all attachments must be strong and decorative elements secured.

  • White A4 sheets for the frame, colored for addition;
  • Ruler and pencil;
  • Centimeter or tape measure for measurements;
  • Scissors;
  • PVA and brush;
  • Raw materials for decoration (feathers, beads, sequins, stars);
  • Hole punch or awl for fastening;
  • Ribbon.

Taking measurements

The first measurement is the distance between the center of the eyes. An even segment is drawn on a piece of paper. Next, the interval between the temples is measured and a sketch is drawn. Afterwards the bottom edge is marked. Dots are placed along the lower edge of the product, the middle - below the tip of the nose. This is done for any product so as not to get confused with the sizes.

Next, side slits and cutouts for the look are noted. They can be anything, it is important that they do not interfere with the view. The markings for the mask drawing are ready.

Preparing the base

After transferring the dimensions, cut out an oblong piece of sheet, retreating from the drawing. Fold the sheet in two, with the fold line in the middle of the nose. Mark the interval between the eyes and divide it into two. Let's move this value away from the fold and make punctures for the eyes. Thanks to the large eye sockets, there will be no need to adjust the pad if the item moves off.

We complete the design and cut it off. If any inaccuracies arise, it is better to correct the workpiece by periodically applying it to the head.

Paper animal masks. Mask coloring page

If the mask depicts any animal, then additional details characteristic of a particular animal are drawn on it - horns, fangs, fur, ears, etc.

We strengthen, we formalize

We work with the prepared mask pattern. We trace the cut out paper shape on cardboard and multi-colored sheets and cut it. Durable material will strengthen, details will decorate. We glue everything together.

The dried prototype must be bent into a semi-oval shape and brought closer to the shape of the head. Then it is important to extend the model on the sides. Having fixed the art on the edge of the table, gently pull it towards the edge.

We decorate, make mounts

To decorate the original mask you will need feathers, glass beads, fabric, and lace. Start designing and decorating as your imagination allows. To make fasteners, use a hole punch or a sharp awl to make holes on the sides.

We will insert the tape into the holes. Alternatively, it is possible to attach the stick with a glue gun. Then you will need to constantly hold the craft in your fingers.

The importance of details

By the way, it is not at all necessary to make homemade paper masks in a hurry. It can be painstaking work on a piece of family art. Such crafts, as a rule, are stored for a long time and delight with shared memories. Masks may be needed not only for small children. Perhaps you are planning a family party or a surprise birthday. In such cases, the mask is an element of the costume and complements the atmosphere of the holiday. The material for its creation can, of course, be paper, fabric, cardboard, plastic and even wood. In general, it all depends on the skill of your hands, the courage of your imagination and the amount of time you have. To work you will need glue, paints or pencils, threads, scissors and colored ribbons.

Raven head mask

This celebration image is created through a simple manufacturing process. Therefore, it can be easily performed with children. You will need: snow-white Whatman paper for the bottom layer, black thick paper, scissors, glue, rubber band and stapler for fastenings, dark marker for coloring.

For the shape, it is important to cut off the nose so that a cardboard beak can be inserted in its place. Bend the leaf in half and draw half of the beak. The width at the base should correspond to the size of the cut pieces plus the flaps for gluing. Glue the inside of the mask on the inside.

For feathers, bend a sheet of cardboard as many times as possible. We cut the feathers and glue them with the bend inward. In the slots for the eyes we glue decorative parts according to their shape. We paint over all the joints where the base is visible with a marker.

You will also get images of other birds: sparrows, parrots, roosters. Only the beak should be made of light cardboard, and the feathers from dense material the color of the bird’s plumage. For example, for a parrot you can take multi-colored whatman paper for the feathers, yellow for the beak.

Masquerade for kindergarten

A Venetian mask is also a good present, but it is still incredibly labor-intensive. Therefore, the question remains: how to make a mask out of paper?

It is very simple, allows for an abundance of colors, so it is suitable for a children's party. Stock up on colored paper, glue and scissors. If you only have white paper at home, you will need pencils or paints. Ideally, you need a ready-made template, but you can do everything yourself. For example, make a bear mask. Using a pencil, draw a round or oval bear's face on the paper. Don't forget the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Draw a larger face than your child needs, as there will be room for trimming. Now redraw the sketch on two copies of colored paper. Let them be brown and beige. Cut out sections of the muzzle from colored copies. So, the inside of the ears should be lighter, as well as the iris of the eyes and the area around the nose. Glue the cut out templates onto the white sketch. Make a slot on the sides of the mask for an elastic band and secure it. All you have to do is let it dry - and you can go to the masquerade!

DIY Zorro mask

With the simplest method, many unusual variations can be made.
You can make a Zorro headband at home. For an accessory, it is better to take thick stretchy knitwear from which to cut a model. To add density, we fasten it to a cardboard base. Then the headdress will stay well on the back of the head. We sew textile ties on both sides. Hem or singe over a candle.

Volume mask

To give the brainchild volume, it is enough to stumble upon patterns of its component parts on the World Wide Web. Print the parts on a printer, cut them and glue them together.

The second modification of the accessory can be done independently. To do this, recesses are cut out on the temples and forehead. The cutouts on the top of the head and near the mouth are glued together, and inserts are added near the forehead. The lower segments of the product are brought to the center and glued. Traditional decorations and additional components are added.

Master class on creating a carnival fox mask

Using the same technique, you can create a fox mask. A distinctive feature of such crafts will be some details.

In this craft, the animal’s face will be painted in a bright red hue.

  1. For work, you can use thick orange cardboard or colored paper. You can use a ready-made product template or draw it yourself. In 4 parts we make triangular notches. Carefully glue them together and get a voluminous mask.
  2. Let's move on to creating the eyes. Here we carefully cut out through holes. They can be made round or almond-shaped. We decorate the borders with bright sparkles. Spread a small amount of glue over the surface of the cardboard base. In the side parts we also make places for attaching elastic bands.
  3. Let's move on to creating the fox ears. Cut out 2 triangles 8-10 cm long. Make a triangular notch in the middle and glue the two halves. Paint the inside of the ear with pale pink paints.
  4. Let's start decorating the animal's face. To do this, we use several shades of red. In this way, on the surface of the cardboard blank it will be possible to create a texture reminiscent of the fur of a predator.

Origami mask

Origami is the ancient Japanese art of folding paper figures. It requires high concentration and finger dexterity to achieve more complex shapes.

Schemes can be found at the end of the article, but before creating in a large format and on durable paper, it is advisable to practice with small pages.

Mini origami devils are used as room decorations for Halloween. And we modify the origami Guy Fawkes mask into an exotic example by gluing a stick holder.

Halloween mask idea

In stores on the eve of All Saints' Day, costumes of scary characters and horror movie heroes are on sale. They look very realistic: all the skin irregularities, folds and exceptional features that indicate a specific character are visible.

Such additions are made of latex or plaster. From the mass of newspapers, they turn out no less scary. This requires a special manufacturing technology, such as papier-mâché.

It uses old books, tabloids, paste or PVA, greasy cream or film. You can buy the basis for creativity. You can form a blank on the owner’s face.

We work with papier-mâché

A version made from a denser and more form-fitting material - papier-mâché - will be more individual and comfortable, but you will have to tinker with it. This is a technique known to many art and craft lovers for creating three-dimensional sculptures and objects.

Papier-mâché is made from small pieces of newspaper, paper and cardboard mixed with flour and natural flour glue. To form the base, you need to stick the mass in a thin layer onto the original form. For example, to create a model of a house or jug, take a decanter or box and coat it with the mixture. But for the mask you need to cover the child’s skin - what can you do?

The first way is to buy or make a mannequin; you can also buy it in art and craft stores. But sometimes they can do without it – it’s enough to do some light modeling on a child’s face. The rules are as follows:

Explain to the child in advance that a toy obtained by this method - applying the mass to the face - will be very comfortable and will exactly suit his features, will sit comfortably and will not slip off;

  • Lubricate the baby's skin with cream and glycerin so that the paste does not dry too firmly;
  • apply the papier-mâché mixture carefully, without touching the mucous membranes and respiratory tract;
  • During work, it is better for the baby to keep his eyes open; the adhesive mixture is prepared of sufficient thickness so as not to drip;
  • when moisture appears, it should be blotted with a light napkin;
  • work is suspended until the first layer dries - the child should turn on a cartoon or chat with him about the upcoming holiday;
  • It is important that the tomboy does not move or show facial expressions - praise him for his patience.

When the model has dried well enough, it must be removed carefully without damaging the surface of the skin. Wash your child with baby soap and lubricate the skin with cream.

It is worth waiting until the papier-mâché has completely dried - after that, the pieces that are missing are glued onto it. The beak and ears are glued on - it depends on who will be incarnated. As a result, the work takes 3-5 days to dry. Then the excesses are cut off, the contour is processed and the entire workpiece is painted, emphasizing the features and character of the character. This is how you create an almost masterpiece with your own hands.

How to make an “IT” mask

The main character of the film is the clown Pennywise, one of the characters in horror films, whose image can be used to create an impressive appearance at a party. Papier-mâché is the perfect way to create an image of a hero.

You need to start working by lubricating or covering the work surface with cellophane. The leaves are torn into small, uneven pieces. In a compact one, glue is prepared, diluted with water in a one-to-one ratio.

Soak the torn paper strips in paste and gradually apply to the face. Apply 10-20 layers of pieces, drying every 2-3. If you are making a blank, it can be made of 10 layers. After the 3rd layer, cover the future scary mask with bandages and lace, which will allow it not to spread. We leave the model's eyes blank.

When the craft dries on the “model”, you can carefully remove it. Next, we construct the elements: we press or draw indentations, add horns and other terrifying subtleties.

We create wrinkles and a specific grin for Pennywise. If you use a base, you can dry directly on it. Dry the workpiece at a temperature of 22-25 degrees for about three days.

After drying, prime the cool mask with a mixture of glue and chalk so that the pieces of paper do not fly around. We paint the sample with gouache or acrylic and coat it with varnish for strength. The villain's curls can be formed from cotton wool.

There is a paradoxical way of making it from polyurethane foam. In this case, the curls must be formed before coloring the product. With this addition, success at any costume party is guaranteed!

Thanks to the hit parade of decorations, we learned how to make a paper mask with our own hands. Here are simple decorations that even a child can handle.

The complex attributes of masquerade images are also described, the creation of which will require a lot of time and effort. A DIY mask is an exclusive accessory, and no one else has it.

Tin foil face

It happens that you need something similar to the papier-mâché technique, but there is no way to wait for the material to dry, or the child is not very assiduous. You can make an analogue from foil. Take for this purpose:

  1. foil, about 10 sheets;
  2. glue;
  3. newspapers;
  4. pencil and brush;
  5. scissors;
  6. flour glue;
  7. acrylic paints.

Step-by-step instruction

  • Cut 10 sheets of foil to fit the media.
  • Bend the sheets and straighten them 2-3 times so that the material is applied as much as possible.
  • The foil is placed on the person’s face and gently pressed onto the protruding parts. It is important to give it clear contours so that the sheets completely cover the skin.
  • Mark the places for the cuts with a marker, remove the foil from the face and cut out the holes.
  • Foil usually dulls scissors quickly. It's better to take old ones that you don't mind.
  • Then layers of paper are laid out on the base, three is enough. The paper is blotted with paste and smeared one by one layer by layer. As the upper levels dry, apply the mixture to the inside.
  • When everything is dry, you can make the details - horns, ears, eyebrows, beak. Make the base in the same way and cover it with newspaper.
  • The decor is done after the base has been treated with a primer mixture or whitewash. Spray paint or white acrylic will do. Attention: acrylic compositions are applied with special taklon bristle brushes.
  • When using aerosol paints, it is important to work in a room with an open window or be sure to thoroughly ventilate it. Keep the cylinder at a distance of at least 15 cm from the workpiece.
  • For smoothness, it is better to take a gypsum primer - when it dries, the product is treated with fine sandpaper.

The carnival decoration is ready, all that remains is to decorate it to your liking. You can also watch videos on the Internet on making carnival accessories and find interesting patterns.
