Headrest pillow - how to sew it yourself. 140 photos of models for children and adults

A headrest pillow is an integral accessory in the car interior for those who highly value their own comfort and safety when driving a vehicle. A specific functional element of the interior of a car is:

  • Driving safety and driver concentration on the road surface, which allows you to react promptly and adequately even in the most unforeseen situations.
  • The ability to maintain posture - when using a headrest, there is no overstrain of the neck and shoulder muscles, as a result of which the driver does not slouch or bend his back in an attempt to reduce the load during a long non-stop trip.
  • Additional protection of the spine as a whole and its cervical region from fractures, punctures, displacements during a traffic accident, as well as the ability to protect the muscles and ligaments in the neck from ruptures in the event of an accident.
  • Increased comfort - fatigue does not accumulate in the neck and shoulders, the driver and passengers do not become angry or irritated.
  • Increasing the comfort and general qualities of the interior - such a pillow will be the finishing touch to any interior design, and a do-it-yourself pillow for the headrest of a car is especially good.

Useful for everyone who goes on a journey

Modern life dictates a frantic pace, and there is less and less time for sleep. While on the road, we often fall asleep to give our bodies a rest. You can sleep in a car, train, plane and subway.

If a person falls asleep while sitting, his head may fall back or tilt to the side. This is inconvenient, and as a result, sleep is far from complete. When a person wakes up, he feels discomfort.

Benefits of homemade furniture

Today, furniture and fittings manufacturers offer customers a huge range of finished products, striking in the variety of shapes, sizes, materials, and design ideas. However, hand-made chairs always have a number of obvious advantages:

  • Possibility to choose your own model.
  • Constant quality control of pre-processing, grinding of parts, assembly and decoration.
  • Unique style of finished products.

The large number of available instructions and video lessons is also a plus in practice.

Creating optimal conditions for sleeping while sitting

A soft headrest must be chosen wisely so that the product is truly comfortable to use in the future. Please pay attention to the following criteria:

  • dimensions;
  • filling;
  • material;
  • weight.

It is also important to take into account physiological characteristics. Manufacturers produce variations of portable models.

Required materials and tools

A travel pillow, the pattern of which is simple or complex, is made according to the same principle. Therefore, the approximate set of tools and materials is basic:

  • 2 types of fabric. The main case for the filler will be made from a simpler material. Decorative textiles are used to create a removable cover that can be washed or replaced with another.
  • Filler. It can be padding polyester, holofiber, foam rubber, helium balls or buckwheat husks. It is strictly forbidden to use cotton wool, fluff, or feathers.

  • Additionally, you will need a template or sketch. For this you need paper, chalk, pencil, safety pins and a ruler. Tools are needed for the pattern.
  • Additionally, you may need accessories for fasteners and decorations - zippers, buttons, ribbons, lace and other material options.
  • Scissors, a needle, and thread are required for marking ready-made parts. To ensure smooth and neat seams, it is advisable to do the finishing stitching using a machine.

Some tools and materials for work
Please note ! It is better to choose natural fabrics and materials for filling. This will avoid allergic reactions and irritation.

If all these tools and materials are at hand, then you can sew a product of any complexity and configuration.

Inflatable model

The velvet-like surface of the pillow is pleasant to the touch. The shape of the collar completely follows the contours of the neck. Your sleep will be sweet and serene.

This model is ideal for practical people. It fixes the head in the correct position, due to which the cervical vertebrae relax.

Preparing the ties

First of all, you need ties to prevent the pillow from slipping off the seat. But sometimes they can be used as product design elements. Beautiful ribbons, laces, cords and just strips of fabric are suitable for tying ties.

Strings

After completing the preparatory work, select the master class you like on sewing a pillow, and then follow all the steps according to the instructions. It is worth considering the simplest manufacturing option, which even a novice needlewoman can handle.

Models designed for babies

Often for young children, time spent on the road turns into a real test. To make it easier for kids to endure road adventures, you will need a comfortable children's pillow.

The youngest travelers are advised to wear a helmet. This model perfectly protects both the head and neck. If the child is already 3 years old, you can use another variation, shaped like a square.

For teenagers, it is better to buy an inclined soft belt. This option makes it possible to lay your head to one side without pinching the cervical vertebrae. This design can also be used by adults.

Neck pillow for computer or car seat

Modern computer and car chairs have headrests sewn in the form of a bone pillow, which are designed for comfortable work and rest. Such pillows perfectly relieve tension and pain in the neck area, so when working for a long time or traveling, this accessory is simply necessary. If your chair does not have such a pillow, you can sew it yourself. It's not difficult at all.

The headrest pattern resembles a bone in appearance, hence the name “bone pillow.” What size should I sew such a pillow and where can I get the pattern? Popular sizes of bone pillows (height and width): 14x33, 15x35, 16x36, 15x38, 17x31, 18x34, 19x25, 20x27, 20x30, 20x32, 20x38, 20x40, 20x50 cm. Thickness: up to 10 cm for a car seat , and until 18 cm for home relaxation.

The pattern is very simple, drawn by hand on paper in literally a matter of minutes. If you are not confident in your abilities, you can find a pattern on the Internet or use the ones below:

What fabric is suitable for making a bone pillow? Almost anything that holds its shape well - artificial or natural leather, drape, felt, raincoat fabric, gabardine, all types of furniture fabrics, etc.

What additional features are provided?

A compact pillow for the car weighs little, it will definitely come in handy for active pastime. They take it with them not only to the car, but also to the beach.

The inflatable product perfectly supports the body in the water. If you go camping, then the pillow will come in handy both when fishing and near the fire. You can sit on it comfortably.

I posted this entry on my blog. But not everyone reads it. I was advised to post everything related to the salon here. Therefore, I decided to duplicate the post in this community.

I would like to immediately apologize for the quality of the photo. Some were taken on the phone, just automatically for the sake of history. Then it was no longer possible to re-photograph it on camera.

I’ve been planning to sew some pillows for my car for a long time. But somehow I didn’t get around to it. And then a request came in to sew these pillows. I think I’ll do it for myself at the same time. As it turns out, these pads are not as simple as they actually seem.

I’ll say right away that those pillows that are sold in stores are worthless. Those. they are intended to be universal for any user. But people are all different, and even such a simple thing as a bone pillow largely depends on the physical parameters of a particular person. The shape of the pillow, the material from which it is made, the material of the back of the pillow, the filling, the density of the filling, as well as the shape of the headrests - everything plays a role in the ease of use of such a simple thing. My personal opinion is that if you want to have such a pad, then order it individually, taking into account your anatomy. Made 5 variants of patterns. Three versions were previously sewn from non-woven material, then it was made from artificial leather.

The pads were stuffed with holofiber filler (comforel hard “A” n/v).

The front part is made of various artificial leathers. The back part of the pad was sewn from leatherette and raincoat fabric.

10 pillows were tested before the final result was obtained.

So, sewing a pillow: 1 child is cut. front end,

2 parts (pattern halves) back

If necessary, we sew off the front part of the pillow

Next, we fold the front and two rear parts with the front part (straps are inserted inside for attaching the pillow to the headrest posts - locks for connecting the straps are at the discretion of each)

I put simple ones - 2 half rings or two frames. It tightens well, holds up well and couldn’t be simpler.

We sew this sandwich together along the cuts. Turn the resulting pillow shell inside out

Stuff with filler (you don’t need to stuff too much - the shape will be lost). And besides, a tightly stuffed pillow will be uncomfortable.

Sewing a headrest with your own hands

If you want to save money, you can sew a neck pillow yourself. You need to prepare:

  • Cotton fabric for the cover
  • Pillow material
  • Filler
  • Decorative tape
  • Lightning
  • Pins with thread
  • Sewing machine

Pattern of a miracle pillow

The car version of the miracle pillow is usually a horseshoe-shaped product. This could be the basis. To diversify the design, such a “horseshoe” is equipped with additional elements and details: pockets, animal faces, hoods. This is especially true for child car seats. Patterning a neck pillow for a car with your own hands is carried out in accordance with the sequence:

  1. Lay out whatman paper and transfer all dimensions onto paper. Prepare a sketch of a horseshoe shape with the specified parameters.
  2. You can make only half of the part, and the second will be symmetrical. This technique will help make the parts more equal in relation to each other.

Paper-based blank for pattern

  1. Cut out a blank from paper and attach it to a fabric of a simpler sample. Secure the element to the canvas using safety pins.
  2. Trace the piece with chalk and cut it out. Next, attach the finished piece of fabric to the textile fabric, which will later become a removable cover. It is advisable to retreat 2-4 cm to make the product voluminous + seam allowance.
  3. Baste the blanks for the cover and then sew them on a machine. Leave a 3 cm hole through which the filler will be placed.
  4. Then, using the same principle, sew a half for the cover. Leave an unsewn seam where the zipper will be sewn in or the ribbon ties will be attached.

Making a pattern for a case
To make the idea more vivid, you can carry out additional decoration. Sew eyes and a nose onto one end of the “horseshoe”, embroider the muzzle, and sew on the ears. Additionally, attach a tail, mane, paws and other “identifying” marks for a certain type of animal.

Workflow Stages

  • Draw a template on cardboard. Cut out the pattern in the shape of a semicircle and transfer it to the material. It is important to leave allowances of 2 cm.
  • Sew the pillow.
  • After this, turn the workpiece inside out and put the filler inside. If you need a regular model, then use holofiber.
  • Sew a special cover or pillowcase. Attach a zipper to it.
  • To make the product convenient to use, sew on a small loop. This will make it easier for you to transport and store the headrest.
  • Sew the pillowcase and turn it inside out.
  • Place the finished pillowcase on the pillow.

You can experiment if you wish. Make your design unique. Let the model be decorated with an animal's face. Little travelers will definitely appreciate this creative approach to decoration.

Sew a model specifically for sitting so that your posture is always correct. This device will protect your lower back from shaking on uneven roads. The load between the hip joints and tailbone is distributed evenly. Vibration when driving a car has minimal impact on the pelvic organs.

All pillows have a long service life.

Cutting out the pillow parts

Take a soft fabric, fold it in half widthwise and cut it. Place the resulting cuts on the table with the wrong side up. Place a glass on each corner and trace with a pencil to round off all the corners. Cut it out.

Take a piece of cotton and a ruler. We will cut out a pocket. The width of the pocket should be approximately equal to half the width of the fleece. The length will vary from 15 to 20 cm. Make two mirrored pocket pieces, representing a trapezoid.

Cut four rectangles of cotton measuring 15 by 18 cm.

Main types of chairs

Today, there are quite a lot of designer models, interesting for their shape and appearance, colors and textile base. But among the traditional types of furniture, the following types should be noted:

  1. Classic chair with a rigid frame.
  2. Soft frameless chair or bean bag chair.
  3. Hard garden chair without textile part.
  4. A small hanging chair (most often woven from rattan or wicker).

All presented options are available for independent work. For inexperienced craftsmen, there is always the opportunity to take advantage of video lessons or interesting master classes from real craftsmen.

What can a chair be made from?

One of the most interesting questions for beginning craftsmen is what a chair can be made from at home.

The choice of consumables, first of all, depends on the experience and dexterity of the craftsman himself, his personal preferences in design, the purpose of new furniture (for example, for a home or cottage) and many other factors. There are many examples of original handmade chairs today.

Rigid frames can be made from the following materials:

  1. Solid wood. Excellent for the construction of chairs of traditional shapes and sizes. It lends itself very well to pre-processing, sanding and subsequent decoration.
  2. Sheets of plywood. In terms of strength and a number of characteristics, it is inferior to solid wooden beams, but is a more affordable material. Can be used to make miniature chairs with foam rubber and fabric covers.
  3. The chair can be made of textiles (inner and outer covers) and soft filling. This model is a classic example of a frameless bean bag chair.

There are more diverse materials for the construction of garden furniture, sets of chairs for a summer terrace or gazebo.

In this case, metal profiles, PVC pipes, wooden slats, rattan and willow rods, old wooden pallets, car tires, plastic bottles, metal barrels, hemp of sufficient cross-section may be useful in the work.

It is important to remember that all bases must undergo special treatment before starting work. Wood requires antiseptic solutions and moisture-resistant compounds. It is better to coat all metal surfaces with an anti-corrosion compound to protect against rust.

Decor features

Of course, you want to make such a thing, which is constantly in sight, noticeable and beautiful, so that it does not merge with the surrounding interior, but blends harmoniously into the overall picture. In this case, to decorate the pillow, it is best to use patterned embroidery with threads made from natural materials. But using jewelry and hanging this kind of decoration on it may in the future cause unpleasant pain, since all this will interfere with the comfort of the pillow.

The pillow is elastic, takes the desired shape, supports your head and helps you completely relax.

To sum up all of the above, it is worth saying once again that a bone pillow is very simple to make, but it provides such comfort and convenience that right now you want to take all the necessary accessories and create such a miracle for yourself! Don’t be afraid of imaginary difficulties when making a pillow; rather, think about the convenience that awaits you with its purchase.
