Eternal match: what it is, how it works, how to make it yourself

I welcome everyone to the Volt-Index website. Today we will assemble a so-called “eternal” match, but maybe not quite eternal. In general, “eternal” matches are a sealed container with a flammable mixture inside, then flint, cherry, in general, a hybrid of a lighter and a match.

Obviously, they do not last forever and the flammable mixture will sooner or later run out, and the other components also become unusable over time. But since you and I, after all, are electronics engineers, therefore primitive mechanical technologies do not particularly concern us, and we will make our own eternal match.

This version is electric arc or plasma, as it is often called. It consists of a power source, a high-voltage voltage converter and a battery charging unit represented by a solar battery.

  1. The converter increases the voltage from the battery to several thousand volts and a high-voltage, high-frequency arc is formed at the output, which is very hot and can melt even the copper wires through which it flows.
  2. For assembly, we will need any “dead” computer power supply, or other power sources that have a pulse transformer, for example from a printer or DVD player.
  3. It is the transformer that will be the basis of everything, and on its basis we will build a step-up converter.
  4. Our transformer was taken from a standby source from a non-working computer power supply, it is desirable that it be like the one in the picture, the elongated type will be easier to wind on it.

Next, the transformer must be disassembled; its core is ferrite and consists of two halves that are glued together. Gently heat with a soldering iron for 5-10 minutes, when the glue weakens you can separate the halves.

  • Please note that the halves have a gap in the center; taking into account the inverter circuit that we intend to use, such a non-magnetic gap is ideally needed, but the circuit will work without it.

After removing the core halves, you need to wind up all the factory windings, leaving only the bare frame. Next we wind the primary winding of the transformer and for these purposes a 0.5 mm wire was used and folded in half.

In principle, the diameter of the wire can vary from 0.2 to 0.8 mm - there is no point anymore (the optimal diameter is 0.4-0.7 mm.) We wind 8 turns and bring out the end of the wire, as shown in the picture.

  1. The winding must be insulated with several layers of fluoroplastic tape or tape.
  2. Next, we take a thin wire that was taken from coil 12 in the relay; such a wire can also be found on wall clocks.

It is very thin and its diameter is approximately 0.05 mm. You need to solder a stranded wire to it, as in our case it is a flexible high-voltage wire with fairly thick insulation. Insulate the soldering area with heat shrink, remove the wire and secure it with hot glue.

Next, we begin winding the secondary winding. Turn to turn with such a thin wire will not work, so do it carefully so as not to break the wire. Wind in rows, each row 100 - 120 turns. Then again there are several layers of insulation, where the wire is not cut, but goes along with the insulation. The winding principle is simple.

If the first row went from left to right, the second row went from right to left, and so on. We wind and immediately install insulation and so on 10-12 layers. Thus, the number of turns in the secondary winding will be about 1200.

After winding, the wire is cut off and a stranded high-voltage wire is soldered to it, then heat shrinking, in general, everything that was done at the beginning.

Then we fix all this with several layers of transparent tape and put the transformer back together. After installing the core halves, it was additionally secured with traditional heat-resistant tape.

Now let's return to the primary winding. It consists of two separate wires that are wound together. They need to be phased to obtain the midpoint of the circuit. To do this, the windings just need to be connected as shown in the figure.

The resistance of the secondary winding turned out to be around 320 Ohms, and the inductance was 139 mH. And the inductance of the primary winding is 2.2 μH.

And so 90% of all work has already been completed. Now we assemble everything according to the diagram and connect it to a power source, for example to a 3.7 volt lithium-ion battery.

The arc is formed at a distance of 0.5-0.8 mm and stretches up to 1.5 centimeters. These figures can be increased by increasing the supply voltage. But it's not worth the risk.

The power source, namely the Lithium-ion battery, is constantly recharged by a solar cell made of amorphous silicon. Unlike mono and polycrystalline modules, amorphous silicon can generate electricity literally at night. Even the slightest light source is enough for the battery to produce a current, albeit miniscule.

The battery produces 5 volts, which is enough, and even if you really want to, you won’t be able to “kill” the battery by overcharging, but just in case, the charge goes through a simple stabilizer circuit and a semiconductor diode so that the current from the battery does not flow in the opposite direction to the battery. This battery is very fragile and it is recommended to seal it with clear resin or sealant.

  • The circuit is started by a fixed switch, but you can also use a button without fixing.

That's all. But if you think that we just wasted our time and that the game was not worth the candle, then I advise you to look at the number of likes for this article in a few days.

Kasyan Aka was with you, see you again.

Can it be modified?

Unfortunately, not all people can boast of a careful attitude to things. As a result, even knowing the rules for using an eternal match, some owners may ruin it. But this will not happen if you modify it a little.

All you need to do is replace the cotton wool. Get a small piece of basalt wool somewhere - it is used as insulation. You can replace regular cotton wool on a match with basalt wool without any problems. The main advantage of this material is its complete non-flammability. That is, when the gasoline burns out, the match will simply go out and not burn. Now all you have to do is dip it in gasoline and light it again.

After such a simple modification, your little helper is guaranteed to serve you for many years.

Main advantages

Of course, the main advantage due to which the eternal match receives positive reviews is its 100% resistance to moisture. You can put it in water for several hours, days or months, and then take it out, wipe it and immediately light it easily. No matches, including hunting ones, that are resistant to moisture, without additional sealing, can boast such an important advantage.

In addition, the flame burns much longer than with a regular match - you can easily set fire to even seriously damp kindling, from which the flame will spread and engulf first small branches and then large logs.

It can be used many times. In fact, if you take proper care of it, you can wear it on hikes for many years - until the metal pin that produces the spark wears off. But usually, even with very active use, this does not happen.

It’s nice that despite all this, using it is no more difficult than using an ordinary match - the principle of operation is exactly the same. The main thing is to know about some operating rules. Let's talk about them in more detail.

How to make match houses

House without glue

Take a solid base, place 2 matches parallel to it, and place 8 matches perpendicularly on top of them. This will be the future foundation. Make the same layer again perpendicular to the previous one. Next, seven rows of 4 matches are laid out with their heads in a circle. This is the basis.

Then lay out eight pieces again with their heads in the direction opposite to the foundation, put six matches on top of them in the middle, and put a coin on them. Carefully insert one match into the holes between the last 2 rows. There were gaps along the walls, into which one also inserted one match. All this must be done carefully, without collapsing the structure. The perimeter is covered. Compress the structure.

House with glue

First you need to make the floor. Use glue to make a lattice using matches on a sheet of cardboard. The walls are laid out like this: two matches horizontally, two vertically, etc. Do this on all four walls, gluing the matches. For the roof, matches are glued one by one to the walls of the house at an angle, imitating a gable roof. This is the simplest house. Having acquired the skill, you can find photos or videos on the Internet, use your imagination and carry out complex designs of houses and castles.

Stone Age method

Ancient ways to start a fire included rubbing wood and striking a spark from stone. The first is extremely unreliable: it’s faster to quit smoking than to find a dry log in the forest, make a bow, a drill and cut out the backing.

But instead of flint, you can use a hard stone, and a strong steel knife as a flint. Now you need to position yourself closer to the wigwam and hit the knife blade with a stone. A spark will cause the tinder to smoke, and the main thing here is to have time to fan the flame and light it.

The task is easier if the sun is shining.

We modify the match, eliminating its shortcomings

The most significant disadvantage of an eternal match is the likelihood of the wick burning out. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence. And this is not a matter of absent-mindedness, because at the end of a tiring journey, when all thoughts are only about rest, it is very difficult to concentrate on the burning flame.

This can be understood and justified, but only if you do not look at the situation through the eyes of an experienced tourist and do not realize the scale of the possible consequences. Those who have found themselves in critical situations understand better than anyone else that the inability to start a fire can cost their lives.

Therefore, take action in advance while you are in the warmth of your home. Moreover, after a small modification, the reliability and service life of an eternal match will increase significantly.

Let's remember what the downside is. The wick is soaked in gasoline, which immediately evaporates and the vapors ignite. Once the vapor burns, the wick ignites.

The essence of the problem is clear, all that remains is to minimize losses:

  1. Wait until the gasoline vapors evaporate and the match goes out.
  2. Carefully remove the “original” wick.
  3. Install a new asbestos wick (the fiber quickly becomes saturated with fuel and does not ignite).

Feel free to lower the match into the reservoir and light it as described above.

How to use it correctly

Some owners remain dissatisfied with this simple device, accusing it of many shortcomings, unreliability, and short service life. After all, it is not enough to purchase such a useful device as an eternal match. You also need to know how to use it in order to avoid the most common mistakes.

The fact is that when a spark is struck, gasoline vapors ignite. They should be used to light a fire. If the flame burns for too long, the gasoline will burn, and then the cotton wool that has been saturated with it will be consumed. Even if you quickly put out the fire, the amount of cotton wool will decrease; accordingly, it will absorb less gasoline, and the burning time of the match will be significantly reduced.

To prevent this from happening, you need to know how to use an eternal match.

First of all, you shouldn’t leave it burning for a long time. It was not possible to quickly ignite the damp kindling - after half a minute of contact with the fire, it only turned black and barely started smoking? It's better to dip the match into the tank again. Then the cotton wool will be saturated with gasoline again. Yes, the fire will go out. But you can light it again by striking the flint. On the second attempt, you will probably be able to light the already blackened and slightly dried kindling without any problems and, more importantly, the match will not be damaged.

Also make sure there is fuel in the tank. When actively used, it should be topped up using a syringe - regular gasoline for lighters will do. As a last resort, you can also use regular gasoline sold at a gas station. But then when using it you will have to put up with an unpleasant odor. Refined gasoline for lighters produces virtually no odor when burned.

With this care, the match is guaranteed to serve you for many years.

What does it consist of?

The first thing that catches your eye is the body. It may seem to some that this is an eternal match. In fact, the body is only a reservoir for storing flammable liquid - usually high-octane gasoline.

The match itself is the same pin mentioned above. More precisely, it is its upper part. The eternal match is easily unscrewed from the body, as it is equipped with a thread. Thanks to this, a double effect is achieved.

On the one hand, the thread does not allow the match to fall out of the body - no matter how you shake it or hit it against hard objects, it will be securely fixed in place. On the other hand, and this is even more important, the thread seals the hole in the liquid reservoir.

Therefore, it will definitely not spill out and the eternal match will not fail.

There is cotton wool on the top of the match - it is saturated with gasoline when dipped into the container. It evaporates easily even at low temperatures, and its vapor provides a long burn.

A pin made of high-carbon iron protrudes from the cotton wool. By running it across the flint, you can easily strike a spark.

Finally, there is a stripe on the side - we have already talked about it. It has a flint coating, which, when held with a match, produces sparks that ignite gasoline.

Description of the Zippo lighter

The device consists of a flat or cylindrical metal container of silver color. Its contents are regular gasoline or other liquid fuel: alcohol, kerosene, etc. The kit also includes one single “match,” which is a strong metal tube, at the end of which there is a cotton wick impregnated with a flammable substance.

This most eternal match has a special surface on the side, made of magnesium, with the help of which a spark is struck, as a result of which the wick soaked in fuel ignites.

Useful life

In many ways, the duration of operation depends on the burnout of the filter. To increase the useful life of the device, it is necessary to replace the filter in a timely manner.

The user does not have to worry if the product gets caught in the rain. Simply wipe the device with a cloth and its functionality will be fully restored. Some buyers call this invention “fearless.” Every person may need an eternal match: from a pragmatic student to an extreme sports enthusiast.

User reviews

In order to form an objective opinion about this device, you can study reviews from real users. The device attracted many buyers for its functionality. The eternal match receives positive reviews; grateful users have already appreciated the merits of the product.

Many note that the device looks very stylish and can be useful at any time. Reviews report that the product is convenient to use. However, users say that an eternal match should not be allowed to burn for a long time. This may cause the entire wick to burn out.

Small lighter “Eternal match”

Price: $2.12 I often go fishing, into the forest, etc.
and in general, from time to time there is a need for fire for a fire or something else. And then one day I came across such a thing as an eternal match. Its essence is that inside the container there is a foam rubber impregnated with a flammable substance, a rod is screwed inside at the end of which there is a chirkach with a wick, and on the outside of the container there is a strip on which the chirkach needs to be rubbed to create a spark and the wick on the rod lights up.

It is not the wick itself that burns, but the flammable substance with which it is impregnated in the container, so the main component of the long operation of this device is the presence of a flammable substance in the container.

The lighter came in a regular plastic bag

The lighter is very small

The device has a rectangular shape slightly smaller than a matchbox with a small carabiner on top. From the sides it looks like this

The carbine is quite fragile, cheap and of poor quality, but it exists

On top there is the match itself, twisting into the container, the top looks like this

The match is not very long; at one end of the match there is a chirkach, and at the other there is a thread with a rubber sealing ring. By the way, my thread broke very quickly, I won’t say that I tried hard to do it

The match is twisted into the hole where, if necessary, a flammable substance is poured to impregnate the wick on the match

Well, a general view of the match next to the friction surface

What can I say about the work? In principle, with proper friction (when you get used to it), the spark flies out in 5 cases out of 5, but it does not always light up the first time. The speed of combustion depends on the impregnation of the wick with a flammable substance, as well as the proximity of the wick to the spark. But in general, after a little training, a match almost always lights up. It burns brightly, the flame is quite large.

Based on everything described above, I can recommend it for purchase due to the low price and fairly uninterrupted and high-quality work, subject to all the rules that I wrote about at the very beginning.

Scope of application

First of all, this new product is intended for people involved in tourism, for travelers and simply lovers of recreation outside the city.

Unfortunately, nature does not always please us with good weather. Therefore, on long hikes, fishing, during a picnic, etc., the eternal Zippo match can become simply irreplaceable. When it rains or a piercing wind blows, this device can reliably protect you from the cold - lighting a fire with a lighter will not be difficult.

A match can be lit even at a temperature of -30 ⁰C, and in any weather. Even if you accidentally drop the lighter into a puddle, you can simply wipe the magnesium strip on some cloth, and the flint will be in working order again.

Not only now, but also in the future, the eternal match will become a reliable and economical companion for many years to come. This device can be used not only outdoors, but also at home. For example, for lighting a kitchen gas stove or lighting cigarettes. In addition, in the private sector, it is sometimes necessary to burn the collected fallen leaves from the garden, grass, wood or paper.

The cost-effectiveness of this device is obvious. Instead of buying regular matches, which are often of poor quality and do not want to light at all, it is better to purchase a reliable and durable flint. An eternal match will last a long time, since its flint is of excellent quality, and gasoline can be added as needed.

How to make an electric stove match from a battery with your own hands

This publication has a great idea on how to make an electric match with your own hands. To do this you will need an 18650 battery, electrical tape, nichrome wire, wire cutters, pliers, regular wire, 2 blades, a utility knife, sandpaper, and a plastic clamp.

If you don’t want to make such a design yourself, then take a look at this store, which is interesting for lovers of all sorts of useful and inexpensive things.

Actions step by step

First you need to take the wire and align it perfectly. A small piece will be enough. Now you need to cut it in the middle. You get two contact wires that need to be attached to the poles of the battery and bent at an angle of 90 degrees. Now we take one wire, apply it to the battery and bend it approximately in the middle. We do the same with the second wiring.

Now we expose these two wires from the insulation on the side that will lie on the battery. We install one wire on the battery and secure it with electrical tape. At the end of the second piece we make a ring using tweezers. We also fix it on the battery using electrical tape. Next, we take nichrome wire with a diameter of 0.4 millimeters and wind it around a thin screwdriver or nail, making 3-4 turns.

Now you need to remove the metal parts from the two terminal blocks. Next, you need to take the battery and leave 0.5 centimeters at the ends of the wire. We screw the terminal blocks onto these contacts. We take a spiral of nichrome wire and bend the contacts. We insert the spiral into the terminal blocks and screw it on. We install the clamp between them. The electric lighter is ready. Now you can check it

A battery-powered electric lighter can be charged using a standard charger.

The second model of a homemade electric match

In this story from the TOKARKA video magazine, we’ll look at a solid and difficult-to-manufacture model of an electronic match, which will serve perfectly when you run out of gas or gasoline. It runs on one AA battery or rechargeable battery. In this case, a 1.2 volt battery with a capacity of 2400 milliamps is used. The head part is machined from duralumin. The button is made of brass. The switch contains a contact pad and the output of the filament coil. The other platform will be located outside, it will be secured with a small screw. Inside the case there is a spring from the remote control. The battery will be installed on top of it.

Pins from the contact pad of the motherboard are used as racks for filaments. Instead, you can use copper wires of sufficient rigidity.

The nichrome thread was used from a faulty hair dryer. It is necessary to select the length of the filament so that it does not burn red hot. It is desirable that the temperature on it be 500-600 degrees, but no more. When it gets red hot, a reaction occurs with the air and it will gradually burn out, so you will have to change it. You can conduct an experiment and find the temperature at which the coil will be very hot, enough to ignite objects, but not red-hot. It can be dark, dark cherry color, but not bright.

Making an eternal gasoline match

First, let's tackle the most time-consuming part of the manufacturing process - the body. When taking measurements, you must be extremely accurate and careful. A small error, even half a millimeter, will result in the container being skewed and crooked. So, first we cut out a blank from stainless steel, a square of 50x50 millimeters.

Next, measure out a strip 1 centimeter wide in the middle, and using a ruler and pliers, bend the edges from the marked strip.

You will get something like this:

Now we cut another strip of tin, 5x1.5 centimeters and bend it lengthwise with pliers. We make a corner of approximately 90 degrees, here accuracy is not so important; if the corner turns out to be sharper or blunt, it’s okay. The corner is needed to place the ferrocerium rod in it.

Next, we heat up the soldering iron and, having previously treated the edges of the workpieces with sandpaper and flux, tin the edges of both workpieces with tin. And we solder both blanks. The point of the corner is inward.

Now let's solder the ends. To do this, apply the soldered workpiece with its end to a piece of sheet metal, mark the edges with a marker, and cut out the lower end wall. Solder it to the main workpiece.

Before soldering all the parts, do not forget to tin the edges of the workpieces, otherwise the container will not be airtight. Now let's take care of the top end. We will have it with an external thread onto which the match-lid will be screwed. We also cut out the end wall from tin, drill a hole in it, the same diameter as the internal diameter of the thread. Solder the thread to the hole in the end wall. Now we solder this threaded end to the main workpiece.

At the end, we remove the sharp corners with a file, the protruding tin protruding outwards and we clean everything with sandpaper. You can also polish it all on felt with goyi paste to make it shine, but I didn’t. I prefer the matte surface of the metal rather than polished to blue - it’s not so easily soiled... Well, the container is ready.

You can check the tightness of the container by screwing it onto the pump hose (their threads are identical) and pumping the pump once, lowering the container into the water. Everything will become extremely clear where and what needs to be soldered. Now let’s make a lid with a “match” soldered into it. Here everything is as simple as shelling pears, we put the internal thread as evenly as possible on one of the ends of the tube and solder this end of the tube to the center of the thread. Like this:

We process the soldered area with a file and sandpaper, thereby removing excess tin. Next, using a burr machine (or an emery machine), we cut out a small strip from a piece of metal cloth. This will be the chair itself. The strip should be small, but should fit into the tube with force. You can even leave small stops so that the strip of steel does not fall entirely into the tube.

Now we hook the wick on top of this arm and install it in the tube until it fits. It is necessary that the tip of the steel chair sticks out of the tube. We trim the wick.

The match lid is ready. Next, we push the remains of the wick, cotton wool, padding polyester, in general, anything can be done to impregnate it with gasoline, and install a rubber gasket so that gasoline vapors do not evaporate in the future.

Just don’t forget to leave room inside for the match itself. Now we lubricate the inner corner of the container with second glue, and apply a ferrocerium rod to it, wait until it hardens, and fill with gasoline. It is advisable to use a specially cleaned one, for lighters, for better ignition.

There you go. You can use it. Let's hope that we won't have situations where we have to use this thing, but as they say, it's better to have and not need than to need and not have!

How to use and refill

Some people don't know how to use an eternal match. In fact, everything here is extremely simple. Working with it is no more difficult than with ordinary matches. Let us describe the whole process for clarity:

  • Unscrew the match from the container.
  • Run the pommel along the magnesium strip with light pressure.
  • Light kindling or other flammable material.
  • Place the match in the container and tighten it tightly so that the gasoline does not spill out - due to lack of oxygen, the flame will instantly go out.

As you can see, working with an eternal match is no more difficult than with a regular one.

Now let's move on to the next question - how to refill an eternal match? The best option is gasoline for lighters. You can purchase it in many specialized stores. A high degree of purification allows you to almost completely get rid of impurities that cause an unpleasant odor during combustion. And such fuel smokes much less than gasoline from a gas station.

How does it work

It is important that the “eternal match” keychain has the simplest operating principle. It is a small (the size of half a matchbox) metal container in which fuel is stored - usually gasoline. The container is equipped with a metal rod, on the head of which there is a flint and a wick.

Having unscrewed the rod that hermetically seals the fuel in the container, it is enough to run the top along the magnesium strip located on the side to strike a spark. It will instantly ignite the gasoline vapors. As a result, the “eternal match” lighter will burn for 20-30 seconds - quite enough to ignite kindling, birch bark or dry fuel for a fire.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any device, an eternal match has both certain advantages and disadvantages, which are extremely important to know about before purchasing it. First, let's list the main advantages:

  • Ease of use - working with it is no more difficult than with a regular match.
  • It burns longer than the usual wooden counterpart, and all this time it will not burn your fingers - the flame is always on the head.
  • Not afraid of water - even if a tightly twisted waterproof eternal match spends several hours in water, it can be used immediately after the magnesium strip has dried.
  • You can use it many times - you just need to remember to add fuel, just a few grams at a time.

Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages. The main one is price. Of course, an eternal match is inexpensive - usually about 100 rubles, give or take a few dozen. But with this money you can buy about a hundred ordinary boxes of matches - such a supply will definitely be enough for several years of active use.

You need to know how to use an eternal match correctly. It is enough to gape for the gasoline to evaporate and the wick itself to burn out, so that the device becomes unusable.

In a critical situation, this can result in the most unpleasant consequences.

Disadvantages of the device

After we have learned how to light an eternal match and what advantages the device has, we can move on to considering the shortcomings of the product. The advertisement greatly exaggerates the capabilities of this device. An eternal match is only an auxiliary device that allows you to make fire. The device can only be used a few times before the next gas refill. High-quality products can be ignited no more than 4 times with a ten-second burning period. After this, the flame strength and combustion intensity decrease.

Low-quality devices quickly break down during intensive use because a strip of silicon peels off. The main reason is poor-quality glue, which is not able to withstand the heavy load from the pressure of the rod. Some appliances use up gasoline quickly because they have a weak O-ring between the wick head joint and the neck. Therefore, if you intend to become the owner of such a device, it is recommended to give preference to products made in Europe.

Such products are characterized by high tightness and a large sheaf of sparks. The flame from an eternal match must be protected from gusts of wind, as it easily goes out. In the process of striking sparks, gasoline vapors ignite. Users of the device can use them to start a fire. If the flame burns for too long, the fuel will burn out. If the owner of the device quickly extinguishes the fire, the cotton wool will absorb less gasoline, and the burning time will be significantly reduced.

How does she look

It may look a little different. For example, the shape can be either rectangular or cylindrical. The size is very modest - no larger than an ordinary matchbox. There is a small pin sticking out at the top. On one of the faces there is a narrow stripe-recess.

In addition, some manufacturers equip their products with small carabiners or rings, like on a key ring. This is a very convenient solution - the eternal match “Pathfinder” can be carried either in a backpack, where it will take up very little space, or in a pocket, or even just on a key ring.

So putting it in a secluded place in order to be able to start a fire in any conditions would be a completely reasonable decision.

Appearance

The “Eternal Match” lighter from Zippo is a completely new product that appeared on the gasoline lighter market relatively recently.
Despite this, it has already gained significant popularity and gained consumer confidence. is
a rather elegant and stylish accessory that can become your indispensable assistant. It is very compact, but it is not easy to lose it, since the manufacturer has taken care of a special carabiner clasp, with which the device is securely attached to clothing or other objects.

Due to its small size, the flint will look great on a bunch of keys, thereby replacing the usual keychain. In addition, it can serve as a useful and original gift at the same time.
