How to sew a medical mask with your own hands: 4 master classes + templates

A protective face mask is a necessary item during epidemics. If for some reason they were not delivered to the city’s pharmacies, let’s remember the words of the hero Ilf and Petrov: “The salvation of drowning people is the work of the drowning people themselves,” let’s show a little ingenuity and patience and try to sew a protective mask with our own hands.

To do this, we need a small piece of thick cotton or linen fabric (the kind used to make bed linen). We advise you to choose natural materials, because they are softer, you can breathe easier in such a mask, and the fabric absorbs moisture from breathing well.

To sew a protective face mask, you don’t need any special skills - just remember your school home economics lessons. It will be faster to sew on a sewing machine. But if you have time and a little patience, you can do it on your hands.

The network now offers many options for making protective masks with your own hands. We chose one of the simplest and most comfortable models - this mask fits well to the face, does not put pressure on the nose, is comfortable to wear, and looks aesthetically pleasing. If desired, the design of the mask can be easily changed to create a pocket in which you can put a cotton pad or bandage treated with an antiseptic.

In our instructions you will find two sizes of protective face mask - for an adult and a child.

Instructions

1 step

The easiest and probably the cheapest way is to go to the market and buy a hat, preferably not an expensive one (it will still need to be cut). Choose the color yourself, even pink! =) The main thing is to buy a long hat so that it covers everything up to the neck. Then at home, take scissors and cut out the holes you need, you can cut out only two eyes, or you can also cut out a hole for the mouth, so that during operations it is convenient to eat or drink without taking off the mask =) You can also cut out not two holes for the eyes, but one large one . But there is one drawback: when you cut out the hat, threads may stick out from the cut edges and the hat will fall apart. To prevent this from happening, you need to burn the edges with a lighter, but carefully, otherwise you’ll burn the hat =)

Step 2

This method is more expensive. If you live in a village, then you most likely will not find such a hat in stores, although it’s worth a try, and if you live in a city where there are many shops and large markets, then the only difficulty is to find this hat =) You go to the market and look for a ready-made hat, holes are immediately made in it, and the edges of the holes are stitched, thanks to which the hat does not fall apart, such a hat costs somewhere around 200-500 rubles, depending on where to get it and how to bargain =)

Option #2. Cotton-gauze bandage made of bandage and cotton wool

You can also make a version of a protective mask with a sufficiently large number of layers or with a layer of cotton wool. You just need to lay a layer of medical wool between the layers of the product. However, in this case we recommend quilting the product with threads over the entire surface so that the cotton wool does not crumple over time in one place of the mask.

Step 1. Take a bandage and cut a strip 60 cm long from it.

Purpose of the balaclava

Due to its practicality and versatility, the balaclava is widely used in auto and motorsports. What is a balaclava? In fact, this is a 2-in-1 hat and scarf. Usually it covers almost the entire head and neck, leaving part of the face or eyes exposed. The scope of application of the balaclava is extensive. It is actively used by skiers, snowboarders, climbers, cyclists and racers. Usually it is worn under a protective helmet or hard hat, but it can be used as a part of a winter wardrobe in everyday life. Unlike a balaclava, a balaclava is always worn under a helmet or helmet. For this purpose it has special fastenings.

How to make a mask (for flu, ARVI, coronavirus)

The simplest variation of the product, which even a surgeon can use, is a regular reusable face bandage made from gauze. This is a very cheap material that can also withstand autoclave processing. But now on the market you can find products made from nonwoven materials such as spunbond. Such options are one-time only.

It's easy to make a medical mask with your own hands

You can make a mask for your own protection yourself. To do this, you will need to take material with the following characteristics.

  1. Good air permeability . The material must breathe well. Otherwise, it will be impossible to wear such a protective mask: you will experience increased sweating and difficulty breathing.
  2. Softness . The material should be tactilely pleasant and soft, otherwise the mask will irritate the skin. And hard fabrics will not be able to fit tightly to the face.

The mask must be soft and breathable.
These are the basic requirements. You can also use a combination of different materials to create a mask. For you, we have put together several master classes on how to create a protective medical mask with your own hands.

Requirements for a balaclava

In order for a balaclava to perform all the functions assigned to it, it must meet a number of basic requirements. Let's list them:

  1. Protection from weather conditions (wind, cold, rain and low temperatures) and the environment (dirt and dust on the road).
  2. Hygiene. The helmet liner should protect the scalp and, at the same time, protect the helmet lining from getting greasy and rubbing. This is relevant because washing a balaclava is much easier than cleaning the bike helmet itself.
  3. Convenience. The design of the helmet must be anatomically correct so that it perfectly follows the contours of the head and does not slip or fall over the eyes. This is extremely important, because the athlete’s comfort directly determines his victory in the competition.
