How to make a snow scooter out of wood with your own hands
With the arrival of winter, people begin to forget about their two-wheeled friend, actively searching for new means of transportation. At the same time, you don’t have to spend a lot, since a snowmobile can be an excellent form of transport, you can create it yourself.
If we talk about a practical point of view, then traveling through snowy areas with a passenger car is irrelevant. And sometimes it’s even unrealistic. Whereas, ideally, a snowmobile will help solve the problem without much difficulty.
Do-it-yourself motor sleigh for winter fishing
As soon as winter comes with snowfalls, movement on the roads becomes difficult. In order to be able to move freely in snowy areas, it is absolutely possible to assemble a full-fledged snowmobile from improvised means.
At the same time, you don’t need to spend a lot on a new vehicle. The benefit of this is especially visible when a car does not allow you to move in snowy winter conditions, and even when the roads are not cleared. In this case, the benefits of a snowmobile in a snowy winter are, as they say, obvious.
Any design should begin to be assembled by first developing drawings. All the necessary parts and components are indicated on them, after which the stage of practical implementation of the idea begins. In our case, first of all, we need to determine the brand of chainsaw that will be used in the construction of the snowmobile.
The design of our homemade vehicle is simple and practical. On a small sled made from pipes and angles, the engine and gearbox of the Druzhba chainsaw are installed. In order for the engine to operate stably, a carburetor taken from a Chinese moped was installed.
The chain drive runs in the direction “drive sprocket” – “driven sprocket (from a motorcycle)” of the wheel. The wheel before this was on a scooter; the tire was covered with spikes and hooks, for a confident ride on an icy surface. The wheel is mounted on levers - when the driver gets on the snowmobile, the wheel is pressed against the ice by levers. As a result, the wheel is pressed tightly against the ice surface.
The steering wheel was installed as usual, like on a bicycle. Only here it is not a wheel installed, but a guide (skates have a similar design).
The snowmobile is designed with a protective cover over the wheel, and with a lever brake made by the author of the homemade product.
The result is a very convenient vehicle that moves quickly on the ice - with it you will quickly find a fishing spot with a good bite.
You can also attach a children's sled to this model of motor sleigh on a rope, and keep the kids entertained with walks all winter long.

How to decide on a course of action
As mentioned above, you will need to determine which stroke will be used for the snowmobile. Wheel travel is much easier to do even for a novice master.
Here you will only need specialized large wheels. They are installed in place of the standard ones and the driven part is attached, and the snowmobile of the simplest version is ready.
The second option is much more stable - it is a tracked design. This type of homemade snowmobile will require a tracked mount to the walk-behind tractor.
Most often, such a design is made independently, and then attached to a common main motor.
For the track itself and all its components, you will need to prepare some details. After spending a little time, it will be easy to move a snowmobile on any snow cover.

DIY Finnish sleigh
Finnish sleds are easy to make yourself thanks to their simple design. They consist of metal runners and a seat attached to them. A handle is installed at the top of the seat. They are used to move on snow or ice like a scooter. In places of mass exploitation, almost all copies are made by hand. By analogy, they develop equipment for dog sled racing. Is this type of transport common among fishermen? especially in the version with a motor.
Materials for production
For the base for the Finnish sled you will need:
- steel sheets? 2 pcs.;
- metal rod with double-sided thread? 1 PC.
Homemade fasteners and the frame of the chair are assembled from:
- metal linings? 8 pcs.;
- wooden blocks? 8 pcs.
For finishing you will need wooden blocks, tires, bolts, screws.
Suitable wood is thoroughly dried birch, oak and other hardwoods, which can be treated with varnish, special impregnation or paint. Variations on the moto theme require a strong frame.
Simple Finnish sleds are made by preparing aluminum pipes or plastic parts. In the latter case, stability on slippery roads and with a large layer of snow is noticeably reduced. If you plan to use a sled with a motor, then a small flap is mounted behind the wheels.
Assembly sequence
Steel sheets are bent so that the ends point upward. The arc should be smooth. Two holes are made for the threaded rod in the front part of the resulting runners. At the opposite end, where the feet will rest, homemade rubberized pads are installed. They do not allow the sole to slide on the metal surface.
Any drawing of a Finnish sled indicates the proportions in the design. The width of the top bar is significantly less than the distance between the runners. 0.86 m is retreated from the curved edge and at this point homemade overlays are welded on both sides, tilting them in the opposite direction from the front. They are fastened using a block with a cut side and bolts.
The horizontal posts are attached to the rod between the sheets by welding. The backrest is assembled with your own hands from blocks, as is the seat with a handle, screwed to the frame with screws. They also install various hooks and mount motor parts if necessary. The handle is trimmed with a piece of rubber for comfort.
Modernization
Finnish sleds can be turned into self-propelled ones. The engine is mounted on a separately assembled frame. A pipe with a rod is placed in it. The frame for the motor is installed on the lower part of the sled, under the chair. The second pipe is much shorter, welded to the rear side of the engine mount. It is connected to the fork of the wheel, which is based on a steel rim. The fork is attached by two springs to the base of the chair.
Is the finished homemade vehicle equipped with a motor? Suitable for Soviet scooters and low-power motorcycles. Internal combustion devices that run on gasoline, air-cooled, and have a single cylinder are popular. With a motorcycle engine, cross-country ability will be better due to the parameters and technical characteristics. It is necessary to calculate the gear ratio for homemade products in each case.
