Before the New Year holidays, many parents, as well as kindergarten teachers and school teachers, are asking themselves the pressing question: how to make an outfit for the main New Year's character with their own hands. You can buy a ready-made carnival costume in a store or order a New Year's dress made in a studio. But this is not always financially beneficial, and there is no desire to buy a cheap and low-quality Morozko or Santa Claus outfit, which is sold in every supermarket. Children are unlikely to believe in such a wizard, and the New Year's fairy tale will be ruined.
New Year's decoration pattern
Before sewing a fur coat and hat for Santa Claus, first select short-pile fabric . This could be, for example:
- velvet;
- velours;
- velveteen;
- corduroy;
- flannel;
- red or blue satin;
- red and gold brocade.
To finish a fur coat and hat you will need:
- white fur;
- batting;
- padding polyester, which can be replaced with a beautiful white fabric.
Sewing a robe
Stitch, overcast and press the shoulder seams onto the back.
Neck treatment
Apply bias tape to the neckline of the back, slightly extending over the neckline of the shelf.
Decoration
Sew the decorative braid to the shelf, 8.0 cm from the edge of the side and not reaching the bottom 20.0 cm.
On one side of the side the braid ends just below the depth of the neck so that when overlapped the end of the braid is not visible. Sew a seam into the hem with a closed cut, the edge of the bead to the level of the depth of the neck, only the side where the braid is not completely sewn.
To process the sides, cut strips of fur 10.0 cm wide and length = the length of the sides of the shelf. The fur should be positioned with the pile down. On the side of the shelf, where the braid is shorter, the fur should be even with the length of the braid.
Pin/baste and stitch the fur to the sides. Align the front side of the fur with the back side of the bead. When stitching, do not let the fur pile come out.
Cut out a strip of fur for processing the bottom: width 20.0 cm, length = length of the bottom - (width of the fur trim on the side). Hand stitch the bottom trim to the side trim, joining the edges together.
Bottom processing
Baste and stitch the fur strip to the bottom of the robe.
Hem the opposite side of the robe, making a roll of 0.5 - 0.7 cm due to the fur.
Remove the basting threads, fold the fur trim to the right side and baste it to the product.
Stitch the fur trim along the sides and bottom 0.1 - 0.2 cm from the cut, carefully pressing the fur with scissors so that it does not fall under the stitching.
Remove hand stitches and comb the fur on the seams.

Fur coat for the main character
Usually this role is entrusted to men, but women often have to dress up as a grandfather. The fur coat is worn over clothes, so the size will be approximately 50, 52, 54. And a grandfather of size 46 will seem funny, but he should be omnipotent. This means you will need a lot of fabric. First, you need to take measurements with a measuring tape from the person for whom you want to sew a Santa Claus costume. Then you need to carefully study the selected pattern and make sure that it fits in size.
Next, the pattern needs to be transferred to the material in full size on the wrong side using:
- a piece of chalk or a piece of dry soap;
- rulers and measuring tape;
- finished, cut out pattern.
Then you should cut the fabric, leaving seam allowances of about two centimeters.
The fur coat is sewn from five parts : two front shelves (right and left), a back, a collar and a belt.
After the parts are cut and cut, you can begin to connect the parts. First you need to stitch along the shoulders the two front shelves with the back, then sew the side seams along the wrong side. All seams must be machined using a zigzag, overlocker or special scissors so that later the edges of the material do not fray or diverge.
Separately, you need to sew the sleeves and process the seams. Then the sleeves need to be sewn into the armholes of the fur coat. The main thing is to do it correctly so that the sleeves fit correctly.
Christmas tree
If you have a green dress, you can dress up in a Christmas tree costume so that at the holiday all the round dances will take place around you. For decoration you will need Christmas tree tinsel, bows made of bright ribbon with a New Year's pattern, and small plastic balls. All this is sewn onto the dress in tiers to create the image of a green beauty.
And if you buy a battery-powered New Year's garland and carefully sew it all over your dress, you will literally shine all evening.
Christmas hat for Santa Claus
After the fur coat is ready, you can start sewing a hat for Santa Claus .
For this you will need a pattern. Using a measuring tape, take measurements of the person for whom the item is intended. If you are sewing for a child, all measurements must be taken from the baby, for an adult outfit - from an adult.
When the size of the selected pattern is ideal, it can be transferred to the fabric. It must be transferred to the fabric with the required dimensions.
The hat consists of three parts:
- top part;
- bottom;
- band.
After the finished pattern is transferred to the fabric from the wrong side, you need to cut out all the details, not forgetting the seam allowances. Then you need to sew the top of the hat with the bottom. In order for the hat to keep its shape, you should sew a band made of starched cotton fabric or cardboard or thick paper. To complete the work, the hat, like the collar of the fur coat, must be decorated with white fur or fabric.

Kokoshnik
This is as important a detail for the Snow Maiden as his beard is for Father Frost. Without it, the image will be incomplete.
It’s not too difficult to make such a thing; you just need thick cardboard and a lot of all kinds of rhinestones, beads, tinsel, braid, sequins and beads. Prepare a template and cut out the base using it, and then decorate it as you want. You can string beads and beads onto a thread, and use this chain to make some kind of pattern. Braid or lace will also look good; glue them along the edge. Don't forget to make a fastening so that the kokoshnik stays firmly on your head. Don’t ignore the hanging decorations on the edges of the headdress; they will also look impressive.
Frost Bag
Sewing a bag for gifts from Frost is very simple. To do this you will need a piece of fabric you like, a sewing machine, a tailor's measuring tape and fifteen minutes of free time. Ideally, the bag for gifts from Santa Claus should be sewn from the same fabric as the entire suit. But if there is no similar material left, the bag can be sewn from any material, the main thing is that it matches the color or is of universal colors:
- Red and blue;
- silver and gold;
- white and oily.
Gnomes
Our New Year's traditions are increasingly intertwined with European ones, and therefore Santa's main assistants, the gnomes, are becoming frequent guests at parties. Girls love to dress up in them, and, of course, children, because gnomes are small creatures.
Have you wondered how to make a gnome costume for your child for the New Year with your own hands? It couldn’t be simpler - you need any clothes in three colors: red, bright green and red and white stripes, in any combination. You can dress up in a red blouse and a green skirt or pants, or vice versa.
There are striped pants - great, a red and white sweater - also suitable. Striped knee socks, bright red or green suspenders - everything complements the look.
A gnome, of course, needs a cap; they are sold on every corner before the New Year. And, of course, the gnome is distinguished by special shoes with a curved toe. They are not difficult to make at all.
You will need thick artificial felt in red or green, a large needle and strong thread. The pattern for magic shoes can be found on the Internet. And don't forget to sew bells on the cap and the tips of the shoes!
Making a staff
The image of Morozko will be incomplete if he does not have a magical, fairy-tale staff . It's not at all difficult to make. You need to take a long club, wooden or plastic, wrap it and cover it with foil. You can also paint it with white, silver or gold spray paint.
The top of the magic staff is crowned with a large star. Cut out a large five-pointed star from thick cardboard and cover it with foil or paint it. The edges of the star and the staff can be decorated with shiny tinsel, large beads, rhinestones, snowflakes and any New Year’s decor made by yourself or bought in a store can be glued onto them.
You can complement the magic star with a pair of small bells, which will create an original, fabulous effect from the appearance of Grandfather Frost at the holiday.
What material and tools are needed
The only tools you will need are a pencil, a needle and thread, and a hot glue gun (at the last stage). The material also does not shine with variety. Among the necessary:
- fabric scraps (plain red, taupe and white fleece);
- a little padding polyester as a filler;
- pins;
- 2 black beads;
- several coniferous branches, a bunch of rowan berries (can be artificial).
And, of course, hands that are not afraid of work. Although it’s difficult to call making such a decorative element work, it’s more of a relaxation.
To begin with, on a piece of paper or cardboard you need to draw a pattern for a mitten and a mouse. This is quite easy to do.

Mittens for Santa Claus
Hands are precisely the element by which children recognize their daddy, teacher or physical teacher in Grandfather Frost, so mittens should be an obligatory component of a carnival costume.
To sew mittens, you need to choose the same fabric as for sewing a fur coat, hat or bag. If you are sewing mittens for a baby, then the pattern should be reduced.
It is necessary to transfer the pattern onto the fabric. Each mitten consists of three parts: one back and two inner (top and bottom). To cut a mitten for the second hand, transfer the pattern to the material in a mirror image.
Then you need to cut the material taking into account the seam allowance (one centimeter) and sew it. First, the inner parts of the mitten, then connect them with the back side. All seams are stitched from the wrong side and must be processed with a zigzag or overlock.
Costumes for carols
On the old New Year, it is customary to carol, visit guests, praise the owners and wish them health and abundance. Traditionally, mummers dressed in animal costumes: goats, horses, bears. They used sheepskin coats with the fur turned outward, real horns, and their faces were smeared with soot.
The tradition of caroling is being revived again, so you need to learn special carol verses and think in advance about how to make a costume for the old New Year. In order to portray some kind of animal, you can put on a ready-made mask, or you can turn the hood of a jacket into an animal’s head, because mummers walk down the street and congratulate the owners at the entrance to the house.
We sew pointed ears, a long muzzle and yellow eyes onto a gray or black jacket - we get the image of a wolf, and if we take round ears and a sharp nose, we get a mouse. A bright orange hooded jacket can also easily be turned into a fox costume, especially if you add fur.
The devil costume is also suitable for carols. Black clothes, a black face, and bright red horns and tail - this is the finished image of a prankster.
You can make a special decoration that carolers carry in their hands, on a long stick, in the form of a sun or star, with bright fluttering ribbons. The more fun you spend the old year and meet the new one, the more successful it will be.
Preparing for cutting
Cutting and sewing a New Year's costume for Santa Claus is not at all difficult. You can take an ordinary housecoat as a basis, translate the pattern from it and use it as a pattern. I already showed how to do this in the video: How to sew a Jack Sparrow costume.
I want to immediately warn you that my Santa Claus costume is made from a non-standard piece of fabric left over from sewing the product. Therefore, I had to instruct some details, please do not pay attention to this. I used the fur from an old fur coat, I also had to collect it, in some places from pieces, the trim was also used, which was in my supplies. So, I didn’t spend a penny on sewing a Santa Claus costume! You can follow my example and make a suit from scrap materials or purchase the fabric and trim of your choice. Processing the cape
Finish the shoulder sections and deepen the neckline
Cut out a 10.0 cm wide fur trim according to the shape of the bottom.
Sew the fur section to the cape using the above method.
Cut out two straight strips of fur (collar and collar) for a stand-up collar, width 11.0 cm, length = neck length + 2.0 cm for allowances.
Stitch the stand-up collar along the top edge and ends of the collar.
Baste and stitch the collar into the neckline, aligning the ends of the collar with the edges of the cape.
Baste the collar to the neckline, bending the edge around the sewing seam and directing its seam allowance upward.
Sew the collar on the front side line by line.
Sew a clasp on the front, decorate the cape with decor: braid, rhinestones, sequins, etc.
Assembly
The first step is to sweep everything away, put the outfit on the person who will wear it, and mark the places where you need to trim or shorten. Then, if everything fits, we sew it together, having previously processed the edges with a zigzag or serrated scissors so that the threads do not crawl. We are sewing the Santa Claus costume, of course, on a machine; it is a big job and will be much more difficult to do by hand. We sew the collar last.
