You don’t need large material costs to sew a backpack from jeans with your own hands. How to make a beautiful and useful denim backpack for schoolchildren, students, or kids? Of course, trade now offers various backpacks and satchels, but, firstly, you want to save money, and secondly, the quality of most of today's goods is low. A backpack made from old jeans will always come in handy, and it won’t go amiss!
We want to offer you 2 master classes on sewing a backpack from old jeans, all with patterns and not difficult to sew. First, let's look in the closet and choose jeans that you haven't worn for a long time, but you couldn't raise your hand to throw them away. It's very good that I didn't get up! Today we are sewing a backpack from old jeans.
Choose a style, buy accessories, and you are ready to sew. If you don’t have a sewing machine, it’s not a problem, but you will need to do more work. Just mark each seam on the back with a ruler and a pencil or chalk - and your hand stitches will be straight. We all try to follow fashion: now, in addition to the backpack, a backpack-knapsack, a backpack-bag, with a drawstring or eyelets on top are also popular, we will also sew such models.
A backpack made of jeans - what will you need to make?
In addition to old jeans, sewing a themed backpack requires the following tools and materials:
- Fabric for lining - sewn to the wrong side of the product;
- Izolon - serves as an amplifier for the bottom of the product;
- Long scissors;
- Needle and thread;
- About a dozen pins;
- Measuring tape;
- Chalk or soap for marking;
- Thick lace (for the unisex model – black or brown, for the women’s model – white);
- One or two sew-on buttons.
A sewing machine will also significantly speed up making a backpack bag from jeans with your own hands. It will also help to obtain neat seams.
Features of material selection
To make the accessory, a durable, strong material with a universal texture is used, which would not cause trouble in caring for the product. Denim fabric dyed only on the front side has similar properties. Modern synthetic additives such as lycra, viscose, elastane - they give the material special strength and elasticity. As a result, the fabric holds its shape well, becomes breathable, stain-resistant, and wear-resistant - ideal for sewing a backpack or bag. But here it is worth understanding that denim also has disadvantages:
- high degree of shrinkage - changes in the appearance of the product are visible after the first wash;
- dyeability - denim items should be washed separately from other items;
- the ability to lose its characteristics and bright color if recommended care is not followed.
To sew a backpack for every day, it is better to take men's jeans; the fabric in them is much more durable than in women's models, and there is also more “free” material for needlework. Based on the specifics of denim, for work you need to prepare a thick needle, eliminating the possibility of breakage, and use double threads.
Denim fabric requires machine stitching with thick needles No. 100 and 110.
Jeans backpack - pattern sizes
When starting work, you need to decide on the size of the backpack bag. Based on the data obtained, you can make a pattern.
The latter will be needed to mark the following elements:
- Base – 640x320 mm;
- Trapezoidal cover – 150x190 mm;
- Oval bottom – 270x70 mm;
- Two straps – 620x60 mm;
- Handle – 300x60 mm.
The cut elements on each side should have 10-20 mm allowances (reserves) for hemming. Accordingly, the sizes presented in the list are larger than those obtained after connecting and bending all parts.
Decorative textile inserts
You can add originality to a denim bag with the help of decorative textile inserts. At home you need to look for scraps of various materials. Pieces that differ in color and pattern will be an excellent decoration for a denim bag. To create the product you will also need interlining, 6 eyelets, lace, button, 2 harnesses and metal rings to secure them.
Making a backpack pattern with your own hands is not at all difficult. When making a backpack bag, you must complete the following preparations:
- Oval shape for the bottom - 27x26 cm.
- The rectangular base of the backpack is 73x37 cm.
- Strips for shoulder straps - 100x10 cm.
- Valve, the size of which is selected individually.
After cutting out the backpack with dimensions, you can start sewing:
- Pieces of colored fabrics should be stitched onto non-woven fabric.
- 2 identical elements are cut out of denim to create the body of the bag. On one side they are stitched, on the other, a finished part decorated with multi-colored textile pieces is inserted and stitched.
- For the valve, 2 parts are also cut out and attached to the wrong side. A button loop is immediately sewn to the element.
- Then they cut out the bottom and carefully sew the element into the bag.
- The facing with eyelets is sewn on top. A string is inserted through the holes.
- The prepared straps are sewn to the other side of the backpack.
The finished product differs from the simple version only in the presence of decorative details. Even a novice craftswoman can sew such a backpack. The more pieces of different fabrics are used, the more interesting the shoulder bag will look.
Backpack made of jeans - preparing consumable jeans
You need to cut out worn trousers for patterns of backpacks from jeans with your own hands on a large tabletop in a well-lit place:
- First, the jeans are given a well-groomed appearance - washed and dried;
- Then they need to be straightened and placed on the tabletop;
- The next stage is to carefully cut the trouser legs into fragments.
Cutting is carried out along the seam line to the very beginning of the back pockets.
What tools are needed
To start cutting a backpack with your own hands from denim trousers, you should stock up on tools that will be useful in your work. Any sewing workshops will require the following items:
- Scissors. In this case, it is recommended to use tailor's blades - they have long and sharp blades. And since denim fabric is quite dense, it will be extremely difficult to cut it into pieces with ordinary scissors.
Tailor's scissors
- A piece of chalk or soap. Any of these items will be needed when marking and cutting denim. Experienced needlewomen use special markers.

- First, large canvases are folded with their outer sides facing each other using pins;
- Next, the long sides are stitched on a typewriter;
- The next step is to remove the pins and iron the seams.
To prevent the future product from warping, the grain thread and the stitching line must be placed in a vertical position.
For the subsequent insertion of the bottom, which will give the backpack volume, the canvas is folded in half and then cut in half. The result is a four-sided canvas.
Both sides, on the sides, must be folded with the right sides facing each other, secured with pins, stitched and ironed.
Children's backpack "Denim puppy"
To sew a backpack for a child we will need:
- denim;
- checkered fabric for the outer pocket and ears;
- lining fabric;
- scraps of felt, leather, fabric for decorating the muzzle;
- buttons for eyes – 2 pcs.;
- zippers – 2 pcs.;
- padding polyester or quilted lining fabric for the side of the backpack and front pocket.
How to sew a children's backpack
We make patterns with our own hands and cut out parts according to the required dimensions.
We fold the pocket parts made of checkered fabric and denim with their right sides facing each other, grind them down, leaving a free area.
Turn it right side out.
We sew up the open area by hand using hidden stitches.
Attach one zipper strip to the top edge of the pocket. The second braid needs to be sewn to the front part.
We sew the bottom edge of the pocket by hand with blind stitches to the front part of the backpack.
Above the pocket we decorate the puppy’s face - sew on a spot, eyes, nose. The nose can be made from a leather insert. We embroider the mouth and the circle near the second eye.
We sew ears from two fabrics. To do this, fold the parts with the right sides inward, sew along the contour and turn them inside out.
We sew a zipper between the denim strips at the top of the bag. We sew the lining underneath.
We complete the sewing based on the photo.
The denim backpack with trim is ready!
Backpack made of jeans - cut out the remaining parts
In addition to the base, a DIY backpack made from old jeans requires two handles, a pocket and other elements.
Therefore, the solid top of denim trousers is cut as follows:
- One of the remaining pockets is cut down to the very lines, with the exception of the upper side, which should have 20 mm for hemming;
- The remaining part of one leg is used to cut out two straps;
- The second piece of leg will help you cut out the oval bottom;
- There is a section left next to the front pockets that will serve as a lid;
- Separate places should serve as a blank for cutting the handle.
Each element must be cut with a margin for hemming. For a pocket it is 20 mm, for others it is 10-15 mm, depending on the size of the element. To prevent the oval bottom from becoming deformed, it is necessary to cut out a separate isolon for it.

Every family is sure to have a pair of old jeans that are torn, out of fashion, or simply too small. Of course, you can always throw away your jeans, but you shouldn’t rush, because you can make a lot of useful things out of them. An excellent solution for using up old jeans is a stylish backpack that you can make yourself to your liking. THE BEST MASTER CLASSES WITH PATTERNS A SIMPLE BACKPACK Anyone can make the simplest backpack, because you don’t even need to make a pattern for it. It looks like a bag, compact and roomy.
First you need to prepare materials and tools: *jeans; *non-woven fabric; *lace; *belt tape; *fabric for sewing lining; *teak. The process of sewing a backpack must be done step by step: *You need to take the jeans and cut off the excess from the side of the legs. This decision will affect the height of the backpack. *Now rip the legs apart from the inside, fold them together to create straight parts, cut off all excess. *Carefully stitch all the parts together to create a pipe. *Particular attention should be paid to the bottom of the product. To make it strong, it is better to use three layers. To maintain the oval shape and increase the density, it is worth inserting two layers of teak between the layers, and then gluing everything with high-quality non-woven material. *Depending on the size of the backpack, the lining is cut out. Then it should be stitched from the wrong side and all the details should be sewn. *You must insert a cord into the straps that are intended for the belt to securely close the neck of the backpack. *Belt tape is suitable for sewing shoulder straps. Additionally, you can make soft pads from denim for comfortable wearing on the back. *Make a denim flap and sew on a button closure. Don't forget that pockets on old jeans will not only help decorate your backpack, but can also be used to store various small items. If you do not need a three-dimensional model, then you do not need to cut out the bottom. The seam should be tucked nicely.
WITH DECORATIVE TEXTILE INSERTS A backpack made from old jeans, decorated with textile inserts, looks beautiful and original. Surely every housewife has a lot of scraps of different fabrics at home. They will be an excellent decoration for a denim backpack. First you need to prepare materials and tools: * old jeans that first need to be ripped apart; *details made from fabrics of different colors and textures; *non-woven fabric; *lace; *large button; *eyelets (6 pieces); *metal rings for fixing harnesses (2 pieces); *threads and needles; *sewing machine. For the pattern you will need several blanks: *the oval will be the bottom of the product (27x16 cm); *the rectangle is intended for the base of the backpack (73x37 cm); *two strips for straps (100x10 cm); *valve. Now you can move on to sewing a fashionable backpack: *First, you need to make three patterns (a body, a flap and two straps) and sew scraps of various materials onto a thin non-woven fabric. *From old jeans you need to cut two identical parts that will go on the body of the backpack. On one side they should be stitched, and on the other, a ready-made part, decorated with scraps of fabric, should be inserted and also stitched. *To create a valve, you need to sew two parts, but always from the wrong side. You need to sew a loop on it. *Now you can move to the bottom of the product, it should be carefully sewn in, and then sew on the facing with eyelets, and insert the lace. *On the other side of the product you need to sew two straps.
IN THE PATCHWORK TECHNIQUE Patchwork or patchwork is a very interesting direction that allows you to create a real masterpiece from small elements. Therefore, it is impossible to pass by and not use this technique in sewing a stylish backpack from old jeans. To sew a product using the patchwork technique, it is necessary to use fabric of different colors and textures. For a backpack you will need more than one pair of jeans in different shades. For example, you can take dark blue, light blue and light blue models, and if desired, add a material of a different texture. So, the process of sewing a backpack using the patchwork technique occurs in several stages: *First, you need to draw a pattern to understand the location of the colored patches. For a small backpack, the square size can be 13x13 cm, but seam allowances should be taken into account. Just one centimeter will be enough. *It is necessary to cut out the main part from serpyanka, also taking into account seam allowances. Carefully place all the squares on it and glue them with a hot iron. This method will avoid rough seams that form when sewing denim. *Sintepon can be divided into two layers: a piece of shreds will be sewn onto one, and the second will be used to create a strong bottom. *To decorate the squares, you can take a grosgrain ribbon and sew it on the joining border. First sew it horizontally, and then vertically. *Using an additional stitch, secure all the parts again, and carefully trim off the extra centimeters of padding polyester. *We fasten the side seams using a zig-zag, while the side without an allowance is placed on top of the edge of the product with a sickle stitch. The main part is ready, so you can move on to creating the valve, bottom and facing, which are available for each backpack model. BACKPACK FOR CHILDREN Children prefer bright and beautiful things, so an original backpack will become a favorite accessory for a child. Children love to wear backpacks due to their spaciousness, compactness and mobility. Old jeans and a little imagination will help you create a unique model that your baby will definitely like. First you need to prepare everything you need: * old jeans (a combination of two colors will look beautiful, so you can use two pairs of jeans); *fabric for lining; *non-woven fabric; *lightning; *plastic; *scissors, thread and needles. For a pattern, you should use jeans of only one color. The second pair will be useful for decorating the product. So, for the pattern you will need several details: *an oval-shaped bottom (13x22 cm); *rectangle (25x32 cm) – 2 pieces; *part for valve; *backpack handle pattern – 2 pieces; *straps (60x10 cm) – 2 pieces; *pocket (15x15 cm) made of denim of a different color.
Now you can move on to sewing the backpack. If you want to create a neat model, then each part must be stitched with an overlock stitch before work. If this is not done, then fashionable fringe will appear. Sewing the parts takes place in several stages: *First you need to sew on the straps and the handle, since these parts need to be stitched from the wrong side, and then turned out and ironed. *The main part of the backpack consists of two rectangles. A pocket of a different color should be sewn to one of them with a double stitch. *You need to glue interlining to the plastic oval bottom, and then attach it to the pattern. Next, the side walls and bottom should be sewn together and carefully stitched. *Now the backpack is almost ready. All that remains is to sew the lining inside, and the handle and straps on top.
HOW TO MAKE A PATTERN BY YOURSELF? First you need to decide on the model of the bag, what shape and size it will be. Each model should be based on a geometric figure: square, rectangle or oval. The choice of bottom shape greatly influences the model of the bag.
For inexperienced craftswomen or beginners, it is better to model a bag out of paper, and then move directly to denim. This way you won't ruin your old jeans and can make adjustments when working directly with the denim. The size of the backpack and its appearance depend on the pattern, so it’s worth considering the dimensions of all the parts: bottom, main part, valve, handles, and so on. If all the dimensions are correct, then the manufacturing process will be quick and easy. COMFORTABLE DENIM BACKPACK You have accumulated a lot of unnecessary denim items. Don't rush to throw them away. Denim fabric is durable, so why not sew a backpack for a child from old jeans, especially since it is easy to sew. Today we will make such a cute backpack for a child. So, we will need: - old denim items - machine - threads, needles - zipper for the lock - any fabric for lining I would like to note that before sewing a backpack from jeans with your own hands, it is advisable to make patterns. Then it will be much easier to make all the parts, and they will fit in size, you should start with the main parts. We cut out the future base of the backpack and sides from old jeans.
Using a denim base, we cut out exactly the same parts from the fabric for the lining. We sew the lining fabric onto a base made from old jeans, taking into account that several layers will need to be made exactly in the middle for a more stable base. And on the inside you can sew a pocket. Now we attach the sides to our backpack, carefully processing the seams. We also cut out the top of our backpack and sew a zipper into it. You need to cut out future straps from the leftovers and it is advisable to insert a little more fabric into them to make the straps more stable on the baby’s shoulders. Many people wonder how to sew the straps to the backpack so firmly that they do not fall apart during wear. The answer is simple, you need to leave several holes in the body of the backpack in advance and sew the straps there.
The resulting backpack is convenient (and most importantly, not a pity) to take with you to the dacha or on the road.
If desired, the backpack can be decorated with fun stripes. DECOR Denim is a universal fabric that is used for sewing a variety of wardrobe items. A backpack made from jeans is original, because it is decorated with pockets, labels and other trim that was on old jeans. It can be safely called exclusive. The peculiarity of tailoring a backpack is that you can create any decor, the choice of which depends entirely on your imagination. Often terry, bright laces, flowers, rhinestones or beads are used as decoration. Bright buttons, embroideries and floral appliques are suitable for a children's backpack. Backpack made of jeans - sewing all parts
When the additional parts of the denim bag-backpack are cut, all that remains is to sew them:
- The straps are folded in half with the outer sides inward, secured with pins, and stitched (the same must be done with the handle);
- The sections for the lid are folded in a similar way, fixed and stitched on three sides so that the top of the lid remains free;
- All stitched elements (straps, handle, lid) are ironed, and then the outside is finished with decorative stitching;
- A pocket is attached to the front side of the product (the top should be folded).
In the photo of a backpack made from jeans made by yourself, you can often notice a cord for tightening. Therefore, the top of the themed product must be turned up by 20 mm to create a hem for the lace.
Then the bottom is attached to the wrong side. Moreover, it is important to secure the straps between the latter and the base.
The bottom line where the straps are sewn must be reinforced with an additional seam. After this, you can safely insert the isolon and fix it around the entire perimeter of the bottom.
Children's backpack with zipper
Product dimensions: 24 by 30 cm.
To sew a children's backpack with our own hands we will need:
- fabric for external parts;

- a thin plastic plate to stiffen the back;
- accessories for straps – 2 pcs.;
- threads, sewing accessories.
Master class: how to sew a backpack with your own hands
The pattern of the bag is made directly on the fabric. We cut out two identical parts for the front and back.
Then we cut out the blanks for the side and top.
We also need rectangular parts for the handle and loops (we need two of them, for convenience, on both sides of the zipper).
This is the set of parts we have prepared. There are no straps here, they will be discussed below.
We seal the front, side parts and back with thick fabric, stitching them along the perimeter. For the back, we insert a plastic plate between the layers of fabric.
Please note that its size should be 7 mm smaller than the external parts.
We continue according to the photo instructions.
We sew a loop from a rectangle 6 by 8 cm. We turn its sections inward, then we bend the strip in half and stitch it. We insert the strip into the fittings. We tuck both ends of the loop into the strap and sew several lines for strength.
The result is neat straps.
For thin adjustment straps, we cut out strips 6 by 35 cm. Using the technology indicated above, we bend them and stitch them.
The complete set for the straps is ready.
Attach the straps to the back. We sew wide straps on top, and thin ones on the sides below. We tuck the narrow straps into the constriction.
Let's now work on the side of the backpack. Let's cut out small strips of 4 by 7 cm and make loops for the edges of the zipper.
Fold the edges inside, fold them in half and stitch.
Sew loops onto both edges of the zipper.
Ready-made sidewall strips - see photo below.
Let's stitch them together into a ring, checking that the length of the sides matches the size of the back. If necessary, we make adjustments.
Attach the side panel to the back.
A summer children's handbag is decorated with a bright bow.
We prepare the details for the pocket and bow.
We sew the blank for the bow into a pipe and turn it inside out. Place it on the pocket, seam side down. We attach one side to the side of the pocket.
For the jumper, sew a small strip on the larger side and stitch it into a ring.
Let's continue with the photo.
Backpack made of jeans - making the lining
On the back side, the backpack bag should have a lining, which can be made from any fabric for bed linen:

It is easy to cut out fabric, guided by the dimensions of the base of the thematic product. After the pattern is cut, the fabric is lined out and inserted inside-out to the inside of the finished backpack.
The top fold of the lining should sit within the fold of the denim base so that the inner fabric can be stitched evenly.
Decor ideas
Denim can be considered a universal material. Even without decoration, accessories made from this material look stylish. When you want to give free rein to your imagination and add decorative elements to a denim backpack, you most often use:
- flowers made of satin ribbons;
- fringe;
- rhinestones;
- bugles;
- bright cords;
- all kinds of stripes;
- sequins;
- leather trim.
Patches can be ready-made, purchased in specialized stores, or lace fabric is often used instead. All kinds of ruffles, bows are made from the fabric, pockets or flaps are lined with it. Such elements fill the product with romantic notes. If you use metal buttons and copper pendants, you will get a rock-style backpack.
The front part of the accessory can also be decorated with an applique of multi-colored felt or cotton scraps, or a bright design can be applied to the surface using a brush and acrylic paints. There are many decorative options - you can implement the most unexpected ideas on denim.
Backpack made of jeans - working with accessories
If children's backpacks made of denim with their own hands require attaching various cartoon scenes and decorating with beads, then with models for adults you can limit yourself to:
- A button that is sewn to the underside of the lid and the base (you can limit yourself to a button, but it is less convenient to use);
- Decorative cord, which is inserted into a special hem;
- A leather patch used to trim the outer side of the lid.
If desired, a logo can be applied to the patch. The style and individuality of the finished accessory will only benefit from this.
Types of fashionable backpacks
There are different models of backpacks.
The most popular ones include the following:
- bag - a similar model usually has an oval or round bottom;
- knapsack - a backpack, tightened at the top with a drawstring;
- bag - has a very large capacity;

Using the patchwork technique
The unique patchwork technique allows you to use small pieces of denim to sew one whole product.
For the creative process, you can choose jeans of different colors and densities, with different textures and textures, this will make the finished product even brighter and emphasize the original style of the backpack design.
How to design a backpack
Denim itself is a fairly versatile fabric that does not require additional embellishment. But still, if you wish, you can add various decorative elements and get something that no one else has. For this purpose, the following are used: fringe, rhinestones, sequins, beads, colored ribbons and much more.
It is allowed to create various applications or designs on the surface of the backpack. To do this, a sketch is made on the surface of the denim, onto which paint is then applied or the selected material is sewn.
Design ideas
You can take all kinds of buttons, rivets, eyelets and other metal parts and use them to create a modern accessory.
Design ideas
By and large, design options for a backpack or bag made from jeans are limited only by your own imagination and the availability of the necessary material.
Thus, if you want to have a backpack that is different from all the others, then you don’t have to run to a store that sells designer items. All you have to do is find an extra pair of jeans in your closet.
Stylish backpack - master class
Our first master class was not chosen by chance: although the parts of the backpack are not made of denim, the sewing process itself is very clear and simple. The backpack measures 27/30 cm, that is, medium size. How to sew a backpack from old jeans with your own hands using patterns? To begin, we take our old trousers and cut them along the inseams (inside seams). Like this:
We iron it, make the patterns first on paper, and then transfer them to the places where they will fit (we choose the right places for the pattern), don’t rush. We pin the paper to the wrong side and trace the patterns. Help yourself with a ruler. Then we cut out all the details.
To work you will need:
- Old jeans.
- Zipper 55 cm.
- Ruler, pencil, scissors.
- Tailor's pins.
- 2 half rings, 2 frames for fixing straps (can be replaced with carabiners).
- Threads to match the color of jeans.
- Fabric for lining (optional).
On paper, draw a rectangle using a pencil and a ruler: the bottom side is 27 cm, the side is 30 cm. Cut it out. Bend the rectangle in the middle. Trim off the top sharp corners.
We received the main part of the backpack. We should have 2 of these parts. Next, we make the rest of the paper patterns, pin the patterns to the jeans, and cut them out. Don't forget to add 0.7-0.8 cm seam allowances to all details! So, the pattern of a backpack made of jeans looks like this:
Let's look at the pattern from bottom to top:
- Shoulder straps: 85/6.5 cm - 2 pcs.
- Bottom loops: 13/6.5 cm - 2 pcs.
- The main parts of the walls are rounded: 30/27 cm - 2 pieces.
- Outer pocket: - 27/15 cm. - 1 pc.
- Backpack bottom: 27/10 cm - 1 pc.
- Top loop: 27/7 cm - 1 pc.
- Side part (there will be a zipper on it): 77/10 cm. - 1 pc.
- Synthetic padding or non-woven fabric - to give shape to the straps and backpack (preferably).
If you will be making a lining from lining fabric:
- Basic details walls: 31/28 cm. - 2 pieces.
- Bottom: 28/11 cm - 1 pc.
- Side part: 78/11 cm.
Take the pocket piece, bend it 0.5-0.7 cm and attach it. This is the entrance to the pocket.
Place the pocket piece on the front one like this. Find the middle of the pocket and sew the bartack exactly in the middle. We pin the sides of the pocket so that there is no distortion of the fabric when working.
Then we take the shoulder straps, the loop, the bottom loops, and process them: grinding them on the wrong side, and then turning them on the face. You can stitch it again for beauty on the finished straps.
Take a piece 77/10 cm. Fold it in half, mark the middle on the wrong side with a pencil. If you have a 55 cm zipper, then you need to step back 11.5 cm from both ends and mark the cut location for the zipper with a ruler and pencil. We draw a cutting line and draw small triangles at both ends of the line.
We cut along the intended line, ending with triangular cuts. Bend the fabric inward by 0.7 cm and iron it. We take the zipper, place the side part on top with the front facing up, and pin everything together.
Sew at a distance of 0.3-0.5 from the hem of the fabric. The zipper has been designed, then you need to sew on the bottom 27/10 cm. Place the front side to the front side and sew at 0.7-0.8 cm. Next we will sew the straps, loops, and then the main parts to the side.
- On the back main part we pin first the top loop, and then the loops threaded into 2 half rings.
We find the middle at the back, attach the ends of the straps to it, and pin it together. Sew at the top and bottom, 0.5 cm from the edge.
Next, we thread the long straps into 2 frames for fixation. We thread the straps into 2 half rings. We set the required length of the straps, turn the ends 1 cm and sew them on.
Next, the side part with the sewn bottom should be attached to the back of the backpack. We pin in a circle and sew, retreating 0.8 cm from the edge.
Place the main part with the pocket on top, pin and sew. If you sew without a lining, then the seams need to be overcast. Your DIY backpack is ready.

The next backpack is a bag-shaped backpack for girls. Your imagination will come in handy in this work: there are so many finishing options that it’s simply dizzying. Here you can use everything: any pockets, fur, lace, and braided jeans.
You can use several pairs of jeans, but they must be the same thickness. It is better to make the top of such a bag using eyelets (metal rings), but you can also make a simple drawstring.
The backpack-knapsack will be tightened with a cord at the top. Cords, grosgrain ribbon, eyelets, and half rings can be found in any craft store.
We will do our master class, following the instructions for sewing a bag like this:
The pattern for a backpack made from jeans will be like this (don’t forget to add 1 cm for seam allowances).
Pattern for a small bag. The large lilac part is the lining, the small lilac part is the bottom, the colored rectangle is the wall of the bag, which can be decorated and sewn from pockets and stripes. It is better to make the bottom double. If you want to make a larger backpack, you can use this pattern:
Provided that x = 10 cm: 3 x = 30 cm, ½ x = 5 cm, 2 x = 20 cm, trim strip - top bar for eyelets or drawstring = 60 cm.
So, instead of colored side pieces, we have 2 denim pieces, cut and styled to your liking. Instead of the lilac bottom detail there is also denim. These 3 parts are sewn together on the wrong side and ironed. For beauty, you can add another finishing line of 0.2-0.3 cm (where the index finger is in the photo).
- Next, we place the lining on the previous 3 sewn parts, front to front, and sew them on the sides (the stitches are visible in the photo).
We unfold the work and turn it over, bending the lining in half. The corners are obtained at the bottom. Then we need to sew the sides as shown in the photo, leaving an unstitched area on the right. Don’t forget to insert loops with half rings into the right places as you work. This should be on 2 sides near the bottom.
Next, you need to design the bottom of the backpack: take the work in your hands and straighten the fabric on the cut-out corner so that you get 2 “triangles” that look like they’ve been cut off. Sew both corners to a width of 1 cm.
Turn the work onto the face and sew up the remaining unstitched area. Insert the lining inside the product. If you make a drawstring, it’s easier to stitch like this:

How to make a cut correctly
A stylish backpack is not only about correctly sewn parts, but also about a well-designed pattern. Cutting elements is considered the most important step in sewing accessories and bags. To understand how to make a pattern correctly, you can consider this process in a regular master class on making a classic-type backpack from jeans. It will require the following parts:
- bottom;
- front and back parts;
- bar;
- front pocket;
- lining on the sides;
- straps;
- side pockets;
- loop-handle.
Most of the elements for the backpack are cut from jeans and from the lining, which can be non-woven or thick fabric. The bottom is cut out of jeans, non-woven fabric and thick fabric and sewn into one piece layer by layer - this is necessary to strengthen the backpack from below. The front and back placket are cut from the jeans and lining, so there are 4 pieces that are sewn together in pairs.
Depending on the number of pockets desired, the number may vary. For example, there will be one pocket in the front, which means you need to cut out 1 piece from the jeans. There are 2 side pockets, which are also cut from cotton. The placket piece needs to be cut out on the jeans and on the lining.
The straps are made only from denim, and you need to make 4 of them. The lining on the sides is cut from non-woven fabric - there will also be 4 elements. For a handle in the shape of a loop, it is suggested to cut 1 piece from jeans. Its length should exceed its width several times. A good size would be 20 cm by 6 cm.
Making a spacious model
For weekend hikes or trips to visit relatives, you often have to take a lot of things with you, for which you will need a spacious bag. A standard duffel bag may be too big. Using patterns for a denim backpack with your own hands, you can sew a model of the desired size.
Making a spacious travel bag step by step:
- The legs of jeans are cut off to create shorts.
- The product is ripped out along the side seams and the extra centimeters are cut off.
- The front of the shorts overlaps the back. The elements are secured with pins to avoid displacement. Then the fabric is stitched in the waist area.
- One trouser leg is used to make a handle for a backpack and 2 harnesses, which are stitched and turned right side out.
- The second leg is used to make the back wall of the backpack.
- Then the front and back parts are connected and secured with a single seam of the harness.
- The handle and the second end of the harness are sewn to the back of the product.
- The backpack is stitched everywhere along the side seams.
- You can use an unnecessary T-shirt as a lining. The neckline is cut off and sewn at one end to form a bag.
- The lining is inserted into the bag, fixed along the contour with pins and carefully stitched.
The finishing touch is the creation of a valve, the dimensions of which should be about 12x17 cm. If there is not enough denim, then the element can be made from another material or the pieces left over from the jeans can be combined. The flap is processed with finishing stitches and sewn into the back wall of the product. The fastening can be represented by buttons on long laces, which are tied on the straps left over from denim pants.
