A clown costume is a universal outfit for any fun children's party. It is suitable for a school carnival for the New Year, as well as for a matinee in kindergarten or celebrating a child’s birthday at home. To make a clown costume with your own hands, you do not need to have any special cutting or sewing skills. It is easy to sew from scrap materials, even without a pattern, in just a few hours.
Costume Ideas
The good thing about a New Year's clown costume is that its design has no boundaries for creativity and flight of fancy. This outfit can be easily made from scrap materials or put together from items from your wardrobe, adding bright accents. And he will delight the baby for many years. Its elements can be:
- tights;
- overalls;
- bright T-shirt;
- colored shirt;
- voluminous jacket;
- fluffy skirt;
- multi-colored leggings or bloomers.
As accessories that will complement the image and make it complete, select a wig, a hat, a cap or cap, an overlay collar and cuffs made of organza or foam rubber, and huge boots. Each year, various elements can be replaced with others and the costume will always look new.
Choosing a style for a men's suit
In order to create a harmonious image of a clown, you will need, first of all, imagination. It is also important to properly organize the creative process so that the costume is ready in a matter of hours. The clown outfit does not have any specific standard of clothing, so you can safely experiment. We can highlight the main elements of a men's suit, which can vary depending on personal preferences:
- colored tights or trousers;
- wide shirt or T-shirt;
- cap, cap, cap or hat;
- frill - special lining around the gate;
- bright makeup;
- false nose;
- wig.
ATTENTION! The simplest clothing option would be a one-piece jumpsuit. Just remember the clown in a bright yellow jumpsuit from the McDonald's advertisement.
New Year's suit for a boy
Making a children's costume for a boy is quite simple. You can sew a basic New Year's jumpsuit in one evening. Among other things, this option is quite beneficial from different angles. The loose fit will allow you to use the outfit for more than one year, and if the holiday takes place in a cool room, you can wear a warm sweater underneath. For work you will need:
- textile;
- pins;
- scissors;
- threads, needles;
- tape measure;
- cardboard;
- natural or artificial fur with long pile;
- sewing machine.
The procedure for preparing a costume for the New Year is as follows:
- First you need to cut the fabric according to the pattern and trim the edges. If one fabric is missing, materials can be combined.
- From contrasting fabric, cut out large pieces for patch pockets and long ribbons for straps.
- Sweep away all the details and do the first fitting.
- Sew the elements of the overalls on a machine and iron.
- If necessary, gather the suit at the waist with an elastic band.
- Make large multi-colored pompoms from thick knitting threads and sew them to the chest part of the overalls.
- Instead of pompoms, you can sew deliberately large buttons from fabric on a cardboard base with a diameter of 5-7 cm.
- Make a large rounded patch collar from white cotton fabric. A beautiful collar is made from organza flounces. The collar, cut from thin foam rubber, looks original.
- Sew a cap out of fabric or make a cap out of thick paper. This hat with red fur trim can act as a clown wig. Attach an elastic band to the base so that the cap does not fall off the child’s head.
- The finishing touch is the right shoes. It is better not to take large shoes. A more suitable option for a child would be sneakers or Czech shoes.
If your baby loves the costume, but he has outgrown it, next year you can shorten the pants and wear bright striped knee socks underneath.
We sew a toy from scraps of fabric
To make this type of clown, you will need to find many different pieces of fabric - these could be scraps or old unnecessary things that you don’t mind cutting. The main thing is that the colors are motley and bright.
In addition, prepare the fabric that will go on the body (here it is better to choose a plain material) and filler (sintepon, cotton wool). To make hair, you will need threads or yarn for felting, depending on what kind of hairstyle you plan for your clown. However, you can use other materials that are suitable for the hair of textile dolls - satin ribbon, tresses, boucle yarn, etc.
You can paint your face with acrylic paints, embroider it with thread, sew on special eyes for toys, and make a smile out of red lace.
- So, take fabric blanks and cut out a lot of circles from them (the diameter will depend on the desired size of the clown). For example, you can take a diameter of 6*6 cm. If you doubt your eye, use a cardboard pattern. Be prepared that you will need to make a lot of these parts (if the fabric is thin, then let there be 33 circles for each leg of the doll and 26 for each arm, that is, 118 pieces together, and if you have circles made of voluminous fabric - plush, felt , then you can prepare less).
- Now each of these circles must be stitched with a needle forward and pulled together, fixing the thread.
- To sew a handle, fill one of the circles with any cereal and pull it off. Take another one and put a little padding polyester in it, and then put the first circle filled with cereal into it. Pull and string on the same thread the number of empty circles needed to create a handle. The supply of thread must be large so that all the parts fit and there is room left for attachment to the body.
- Do the same with the second handle, as well as with the legs. Try to arrange the colored rounds so that dark and light shades alternate and you get a bright, colorful picture.
- Any pattern is suitable for making the body. It can be one piece with the head at once, or the head will be sewn on separately. For such a clown, you can sew a head and torso from fabric and from golf or a sock. Transfer the pattern to the fabric, cut, sew and stuff evenly with filler.
- Having sewn up the torso, you can sew arms and legs to it. Decorate the places where you sewed the parts with lace if desired. By the way, gathered lace will make an excellent collar for a clown’s neck.
- The face may even remain clean. Our ancestors, when making dolls with their own hands, believed that a faceless toy was safer, since a doll with a face could acquire a soul and harm the child. But if you want, you can glue or sew on the eyes, give the clown a pompom nose and a smile.
- Add several large buttons to the body to decorate the toy. And either sew the hair to the head, or make a cap from a piece of fabric.
Clown outfit for a girl
Girls, as a rule, love to dress up and follow fashion, which changes every year. Therefore, you will have to work hard to ensure that a child’s costume for the New Year is expressive, original, beautiful, and modern. To sew such a costume, you need to carefully think through the details and stock up on the necessary materials and tools:
The work order is as follows:
DIY clown costume
Girls, no less than boys, want to be the most noticeable and brightest at the holiday, and doing this in a clown costume will be as easy as pie.
To make such a bright and modern clown costume you will need the following materials:
- multi-colored tulle scraps;
- multi-colored scraps of various fabrics;
- elastic wide band;
- bright pom-poms;
- hair band;
- a sheet of thick cardboard;
- glue.
Measure the waist of the person for whom you will sew a clown costume and make an elastic band of the required size, on which the main attribute of this costume - the fluffy clown skirt - will be attached.
Long pieces of multi-colored tulle and pieces of other fabrics must be sewn to the elastic band.
Now you need to make a lush frill. It is necessary to sew short flaps of tulle to the elastic band.
What a clown costume without a fun and bright cap.
First, make a cap from a sheet of thick cardboard, which you then drape with bright fabric. Decorate your clown hat with colorful pompoms. Attach the finished cap to the hairband.

The focus is on bright details
If you are going to pick up patterns and sew an outfit yourself, keep in mind that the fabrics should be bright, rich, and colorful. Suitable materials colors will be red, yellow, green, blue, cyan. The basis can also be white fabric, decorated with multi-colored pompoms, frills, and flounces. For a New Year's masquerade, don't skimp on decorating your costume with serpentine.

It is also important to choose the right shoes. If the performance will take place in a kindergarten, it is better for the child to wear simple slippers or shoes, but they must first be decorated. In this case, pom-poms will come in handy; you just need to attach them to the top of each sneaker. They can be made quite simply. You need to cut out two circles with holes from cardboard (for example, a circle with a diameter of 8 cm, a hole of 3 cm). A thread (for knitting) is tightly wound around this circle, the tip is well secured. Next, along the end of the circle, the threads are carefully cut, the auxiliary cardboard parts are removed, and the pompom is beautifully aligned. That's all.
Clown outfit for a girl
Girls, as a rule, love to dress up and follow fashion, which changes every year. Therefore, you will have to work hard to ensure that your child’s costume for the New Year is expressive, original, beautiful, and modern.
To sew such a suit, you need to carefully think through the details and stock up on the necessary materials and tools:
- multi-colored scraps of thin transparent fabric (organza or tulle);
- wide nylon tapes;
- multi-colored pieces of cotton;
- wide bodice;
- bright pom-poms;
- hairband;
- pins, needles, threads;
- scissors;
- measuring tape.
The work order is as follows:
- First of all, you need to measure the girl's waist. Using this measurement, sew a corsage ring.
- Cut the fabric into strips 7-10 cm wide. The length of the flaps should be 2 times longer than the planned length of the skirt.
- The blanks are folded in half and pinned to the elastic band. Instead of fabric, you can use ready-made wide nylon tapes.
- When the fluffy organza petticoat is ready, a fluffy outer skirt made of bright cotton scraps is sewn on top.
- Two wide strips are used to make straps that are sewn to the waistband of the skirt.
- A bright clown blouse will be decorated with a collar of lush flounces, large pompoms, and bright buttons.
- You can wear wide striped leggings on your legs. If the costume has a lot of colorful details, the image of this character will be well complemented by white tights.
- A miniature hat with a rim or cap will add a mischievous look to the little clown. A large pink or yellow bow made of thin foam rubber will also fit organically.
- It is better to replace clown boots for girls with bright, feminine shoes or slippers.
Working with plasticine
An equally original clown is made from plasticine, and even the smallest craftsmen can work with this material under the guidance or together with their parents.
We start work by designing the head.
We will make the body from two oblong elements of different colors, and immediately decorate it with buttons and an openwork collar. We insert a wooden stick into the upper part and place the head on it.
We fashion wide sleeves, attach them to the body, and complement them with yellow “fists”. All that remains is to make boots with plasticine pom-poms.
Clown costume for adult
The New Year's holiday will be unforgettable for the child if parents also join the carnival masquerade in unusual costumes. One of the easiest options for this is a clown outfit. Every year it can be updated with new interesting details.
The basis of a suit for dad can be the following elements:
- Cardboard clown hat or cap with a pompom.
- Satin bloomers or jumpsuit.
- A bright T-shirt or plaid shirt, decorated with daisy flowers from pieces of fabric.
- An oversized jacket with rolled up sleeves, decorated with multi-colored patches.
- Round toe boots or sneakers.
You can make a New Year's costume for your mother from the following details:
- Short dress with a full skirt.
- Large patch collar.
- Small hat or plaid beret.
- Striped leggings, leg warmers.
- Colorful shoes with rough heels.
A little imagination - and you will create a beautiful and unique outfit with your own hands. Combine, mix, experiment - a clown costume is exactly the case when it’s difficult to overdo it.
Among all the costumes intended for New Year's parties, the clown outfit stands out. The reason for this is the range of bright materials used in its manufacture.
At first glance, creating this look may seem very difficult, which forces you to buy a ready-made suit or opt for sewing another option. However, parents who do not have much experience in sewing can also please their child with a homemade outfit.
Making baby clowns for kids
Another idea is a clown in the form of a Waldorf doll. Try to make tiny dolls with your own hands, which children will surely like, because such toys will easily fit even in the palm of your hand or pocket.
- Take the patterns and transfer them to the fabric. You should have four parts - one head, one cap and two mirror elements for the body in two colors.
- To assemble the body, fold two pieces right sides inward (different colors), align and sew along the center line. You need to do the same with the two remaining elements. Press the seams well and fold the front and back pieces together (facing each other). Sew along the outline, but leave a gap at the head stitching line.
- Turn the body inside out, iron it and stuff it with filler. To form the arms and legs, make small balls of stuffing and push them tightly into the very end of the leg. Take a double thread and bring it from the inside to the outside where there is a double layer of fabric with allowances and then go through the top layer of material in an arc. Sew on the reverse side in the same way, pulling the thread tightly and tightly so that your ball does not slip away.
- So gradually you will be able to make arms and legs. Now you can grab your head. As in the previous master class with circles, this round piece also needs to be sewn with a basting stitch along the edge and pulled together, filled with stuffing.
- Before sewing the head to the body, run basting stitches along the neckline to tuck the seam allowances inward.
- Sew on the head, and then run a basting stitch from the neck to the armpits of the toy (grab the back and front together). Pull it well.
- Sew a cap for the clown and gather lace around the neck.
- You can embroider or draw eyes on him and brown his cheeks.

What should a clown costume consist of?
The main part of the costume should consist of striped elements in bright colors. Sewing them yourself is quite difficult if you do not have the appropriate skills. The good news for these parents is that they can use pajamas or onesies in matching colors that are found in the child’s wardrobe. A good addition to them would be socks and shoes of a similar design.
A paper cap is suitable as a headdress. There are times when parents prefer to sew a multi-colored hat.
The most important element of the outfit is a false clown nose, which you can buy separately or make yourself by painting the foam rubber red.
Accessories such as a bright wig, a fluffy collar (jabot), and bright makeup will help complete the look.
Of all the above, the most difficult will be to make a frill.
We complement the image with accessories
The nose is rightfully considered one of the most recognizable accessories of a clown image. Learn how to make your own clown nose out of foam rubber!
The material you will need is foam rubber. Buy it at a specialty store or use a sponge for showering or washing dishes.
Cut a piece 1cm thick using a paper cutter. Trace a circle (use a cup as a stencil) and cut it out. Then stitch along the edges with matching threads, tightening the edges of the circle.
Sew on elastic thread or stretch fishing line. Paint the nose in the desired color using gouache or initially take a sponge of the desired color.
How to make a frill?
To create this part of the outfit you will need scissors, cardboard, colored paper and glue.
The collar manufacturing process consists of the following steps:
- gluing a cardboard ring, the diameter of which will be greater than the thickness of the child’s neck;
pasting the ring with colored paper;
creating the main part of the frill from colored paper by evenly folding it into equal parts, the height of each of which corresponds to the height of the ring;
gluing the collar elements to the ring.
After drying, the collar will be ready.
Should I apply makeup?
The presence of makeup perfectly complements the image of a clown. Many parents consider it necessary to apply it. At the same time, it is worth remembering that children are not accustomed to makeup and can accidentally break it during a matinee. For this reason, it is better to refrain from using this element.
The need to use a sewing machine often forces parents to give up making their own carnival costume. A clown outfit made from scrap materials proves that excellent results are achievable without the use of special equipment.
A situation familiar to every second person: the pre-holiday bustle and trotting around grocery and souvenir shops distracted from more important acquisitions. It so happened that tomorrow is a children's party, but the New Year's masquerade has not been purchased. Don’t be upset and don’t let your child be sad because of such a little thing! You can make an outfit for your baby from what you have on hand. For example, a clown costume from my mother’s old dress. Very quickly, without material costs and special skills. All you need is a wild imagination and an hour of time.
Materials for work:
Old (preferably very bright) mother’s dress – 1 pc.; Elastic narrow tape (elastic band) – 35 cm; Remains of brightly colored knitting threads – several balls; Thread, needle, sewing machine.
Stages of work:
First stage: preparing the base.
We are looking for a suitable dress in my mother’s old things.
Unzip the zipper on the back half of the dress from bottom to top by 20-25 centimeters.
We cut the front half of the dress (hem) to approximately the same distance. If there is no zipper on the dress, then an incision must be made on both the front and back halves of the hem. Second stage: forming the trouser legs.
We turn the dress to the left side.
We connect the front and back parts of the dress along the cut line. Using the front part of the cut, we “wrap” the zipper. Stepping back 1 centimeter from the edge, sew the connected parts of the cut. At the junction of the cut, we make a seam perpendicular to the bottom line of the dress. The result is the legs of the overalls.
Cut the elastic tape in half.
We sew an elastic band along the bottom edge of each pant leg, pulling it tight. The result is an assembly that does not allow the pant leg to fall off. This is why the length of the dress does not matter. Third stage: making pom-poms.
Cut out two circles from cardboard. Cut out small circles in the center of each circle (the smaller the inner circle, the larger the pompom you will get). Cut out part of the side of the circle. We select the remaining knitting threads that match the color. Place a thread on one cardboard circle across the entire width (2-3 layers), leaving the edges on the cut-out line of the side of the large circle. We place the second cardboard circle on top of the thread, matching the cutout lines. We wind the knitting threads onto folded cardboard circles. We insert scissors between the cardboard circles and cut the winding. We tie the ends of the thread inserted inside the cardboard circles into a knot, pulling it tightly. It turns out a pompom with a tail. If you wrap cardboard circles with threads of different colors, the pompom will turn out to be multi-colored.
There is probably no child who doesn’t love the circus. A clown costume for the New Year or a costumed masquerade ball is the dream of not only boys, but also girls. You can easily sew such an outfit from scrap materials; any mother or grandmother with basic skills in working with a needle and thread can cope with the task.
Clown boy is always fun
. You can, of course, buy a clown outfit, but store-bought costumes are rather faceless and of the same type. In addition, it is difficult to find the right size. Therefore, the best way to help your child stand out from the crowd and cheer up all the kids at the party is to make him a circus performer’s outfit yourself.
Master class: lavender clown Cell
There lived a red-haired clown in the arena, as if drawn with happiness! With a smile and the colors of his clothes, he gave a rainbow of hope: to both children and adults. It was fabulous and easy with him)
I drew all the patterns myself, based on the proportions and size of the head, my clown turned out to be 32 cm tall.
I’ll say right away that if you don’t have such a head blank, don’t be discouraged, you can also use the head of any small doll (perhaps this is a chance to give new life to a faulty toy). Usually it is rubber or plastic and already has hair, which makes the task of creating a hairstyle a little easier. You can apply clown makeup with acrylic paints by looking at examples on the Internet, or trust your own imagination, and get a lot of positive emotions.
To create a clown doll you will need:
1. Ceramic clown head blank, circumference 18 cm, height from the beginning of the neck to the top of the head 8 cm, (sold in craft stores, I also saw them in one of the shops here at the Crafts Fair) or a doll’s head.
2. Fabric for the doll’s arms and legs - cotton, calico, linen.
4. Knitwear for hats, snoods and socks. I have this sleeve from a blouse, in the master class it will be clear why.
5. White fleece for the elephant.
6. Plain and red pencils (instead of red, you can use blush or pastel).
7. Transparent universal adhesive gel (I have Moment).
8. Filling: padding polyester, padding polyester, holofiber. It is advisable to use synthetic padding for the body, as it is more dense when stuffed; lighter fillers are suitable for arms and legs.
9. Pattern paper.
10. Scissors, needles, pins, threads of different thicknesses and suitable colors.
11. Threads are red floss, you can use wool, boucle or doll tresses.
12. Buttons, decorative braid.
13. Skewer (you can use a pencil or sushi stick).
First, I cut out the pattern pieces from paper. The dotted lines indicate places that are not stitched.
I attached it to the future clown to see the proportions of the body and clothes.
I fold the fabric with the right side inward and pin the patterns with pins. When cutting, it is necessary to take into account the direction of the grain of the fabric so that the arms and legs do not become “warped” later. I trace the details and add 0.5cm seam allowances on all sides. If the fabric is loose, allowances can be added, or the edges of the cuts can be treated with PVA glue.
When cutting a shirt, note that on the fold line side the fabric is folded in half and not cut.
For trousers, all four parts are cut out.
I sew the parts of the arms and legs on a machine using a small stitch and only after that I cut them out, taking into account an allowance of 0.5 cm.
I also stitch the clown’s body on a machine, leaving unsewn the top for the head and the bottom for the legs. In the places where all the parts are rounded, I make cuts so that when you turn them out, there is no tightening or deformation.
Using a skewer, I turn the clown’s body inside out.
I turn the handles and...
Again, using a skewer or pencil, I stuff the doll’s legs up to the knee quite tightly, and above I leave the legs “empty”, thanks to this the Cell will be able to sit with its legs hanging down and bend them as it wishes :)
I pin the place of the future “knee” with pins.
Then I tuck the legs inside the clown’s body and secure them with pins. The legs should be positioned symmetrically.
I stitch the chipped areas using a machine. The result was movable legs and a striped body.
Which needs to be stuffed tightly with padding polyester; if you don’t stuff it very tightly, the head will outweigh it and the doll will fall over.
Now the pens. We stuff it, but not too much. You can lightly stuff your palms and squeeze them, continuing to stuff your hand a little more tightly. After stuffing, unsewn areas should be sewn up with a hidden seam.
And on the palms, sew through the “fingers” with matching threads. On tightly stuffed palms, the “fingers” would not turn out to be embossed.
Each handle has a five-fingered palm.
But let's continue. I fold the cut parts of the shirt right sides together and stitch them. I folded and basted the line of the neckline, sleeves and bottom to make it easier to stitch, since they are a bit narrow, but more experienced needlewomen can simply pin them together.
I turn it inside out, the shirt is almost ready, the only thing missing is the “butterfly” and the assembly of the sleeves.
Now you can sew on the head. You need to insert the neck into the upper hole of the body and sew it on. This is easy to do with a long needle and strong thread. There are special holes in “my” head for this. It is important to “go” through each hole with a needle several times, and then stitch along the edge of the collar to make sure the head holds tightly. I later sewed decorative braid over the threads to hide the seams. If the head is rubber, then simply stitch it in a circle, since this material is easily stitched with a needle. And in the plastic one you can make holes with a hot awl and also stitch them.
I initially planned the pants for the Plaid to be wide with suspenders. I fold the parts of the trouser legs “face” inward. I divide the trouser leg in half vertically, marking a dart 3cm long. in the front and in the back. In total you will get 4 darts.
I stitch on a typewriter.
To sew suspenders (“help” as my grandfather used to say), I cut out strips of fabric 14cm long and 2.5cm wide. I fold it as shown in the photo below and.
I'm stitching. I turned the top and bottom of the trousers inward and sewed them on a machine. The suspenders will cross on the back. I sew them symmetrically to the waistband in the center of the back of the pants. There will be buttons on the front.
There's only a little time left, you can rest for a minute and do your hair :)
If you need a voluminous hairstyle, you need to wind more threads. Now I insert the scissors from the very edge between the cardboard and the threads and cut it off. I do the same at the other end of the cardboard.
The threads lie flat. I divide them in half in the middle and stick a strip of tape. Now, using a machine, using matching threads, you need to sew the parting directly along the tape as in the photo below.
I carefully peel off the tape and make knots. To glue the hair to the head, I drew a line in the middle of the head with a pencil and, stepping back 2 cm from the future parting, drew another line around the circumference. Now you can apply stripes of glue to these lines. You need to apply a little glue so that it does not soak through the threads and until it dries, apply the hair evenly and press.
The threads at the back will be longer; they need to be cut off and the hairstyle straightened. Now my clown looks like Ivanushka :)
The master class turned out to be more than I expected. I sew suspenders onto bright buttons.
I got to the promised “butterfly”, which is sewn from a folded rectangle and decorated with a red stitch.
You can do without it.
But suddenly Kletochka decides to take off her snood, and then there’s beauty :)
Using a simple forward stitch with a needle, I sew the sleeve, as shown in the photo below, and smear it. This makes the outfit look more complete.
Now I’ll tell you why the knitted sleeve of the blouse was needed (you can also replace the sleeve with a new sock or golf shirt of a suitable size). We divide it into three parts. Where the cuff is there will be a hat, then a snood and socks. I cut off 11 cm pieces with a cuff and a small circle of knitwear the size of a five-ruble coin.
I put a padding polyester in the center of the circle and pull the edges together, forming a “bubo” like this.
I gather up the top part of the cap and sew on the “bubo”. All that remains is to decorate it with a button.
The snood is sewn from a rectangle 17cm long and 6cm wide. I fold it face inward and stitch it, leaving one short side for turning inside out. I connect the resulting rectangle into a ring and stitch it. Unfortunately, during the work I only took one photo of the snood, so if it’s not very clear, ask, I’ll be happy to answer :)
In order to sew socks, I take the leg pattern and apply it to the fabric, determine the height of the boot and trace it with a pencil. I sew future socks on a machine, cut them out and turn them inside out.
I turn up the edge of the sock and sew the floss with a simple forward stitch using a needle and red thread, thereby finishing putting on the Check.
But since there is still sadness in the eyes of my clown, there is nothing left to do but sew him his favorite toy, and maybe his best friend, the Elephant.
I drew the pattern of a primitively simple elephant myself from memory. I made it out of fleece with pink checkered ears.
I transferred the pattern to fleece, folded in half with the face inward.
I sewed it on my hands with white thread, turned it inside out and stuffed it tightly with padding polyester, sewed up the hole, it was under the trunk, with a hidden seam. I folded the fabric in half with my face inward, cut out two elephant ears and sewed it on my hands.
I embroidered the eyes symmetrically with black thread and also sewed the ears evenly.
Here the Elephant fell onto its side so that I could tint it along the seams with a pencil (you can use blush or pastel).

Pros of a homemade clown costume
Children's costume competitions are often held in kindergartens and primary schools. Usually such events are held during the New Year holidays, but there are also themed parties (for example, on the theme “circus”, “pirates”, “animals of Africa”, “inhabitants of the deep sea”). Sewing a children's suit
, especially with a baby, is a great opportunity to show your imagination and take a little break from reality, transport yourself to the exciting world of a fairy tale.
A clown costume for a boy is especially suitable for children who are timid and shy in everyday life. This outfit will help you relax, overcome your inhibitions and become more fun and sociable. But for the tomboys
who are used to being the center of attention, this is also a great option. Here are a few reasons to make such an outfit for a five to seven year old child:
Materials required for work
First of all, you will need bright material for work. You can take either brightly colored fabric or various colorful shreds (the more, the better). A clown is a case where you can’t “overdo it” with variegation and brightness. A circus performer's costume should look really funny, so the colors can be any, even the most ridiculous and garish
. You can make a clown hat from cardboard or thick paper, or you can buy a ready-made hat at any supermarket that sells various accessories for children's parties. To ensure that the headdress holds well, ribbons are sewn to it.
For cutting and sewing you will need:
Having prepared everything you need, you can safely get to work

Description of the sewing process
First of all, you need to find a pattern and transfer it to the fabric. Before you make a clown costume at home, you need to cut out all the details using sharp scissors. Here is a general description of the work process:
You can put a “magic wand” in the clown’s hand - an ordinary pointer covered with foil, with a star made of shiny golden cardboard. And this will be not only a circus performer, but also a magician. The child himself can design his own makeup. From the age of five to six, children usually enjoy drawing with paints.
And. If you show your child how a clown paints his face before a performance, the child will certainly want to repeat it. There is no point in holding back children's imagination. The main thing is to use hypoallergenic dyes (for example, face painting specifically designed for face painting).
The New Year's clown costume can be safely complemented with shiny tinsel, sparkles, and Christmas tree “rain.” Large, bright buttons are sewn onto clothes, preferably in different colors, in contrast to the color of the fabric. A clown's hat can be anything, but most often it is a cap (like Oleg Popov's), a funny beret (like Yuri Kuklachev's) or a top hat from which you can pull out various wonderful things. Below are a few more accessories that every self-respecting circus performer should have:
Classic clown makeup is a white face, red nose and cheeks. When preparing for the holiday, you can explain to your child: circus performers do this so that they can be clearly visible to the audience even from the very last rows. Makeup should be bright, expressive and laconic. You should not draw intricate patterns on your baby’s face. Just one or two touches are enough, and the child will already turn into a cheerful artist.
Clown wig: creation technology
In a clown costume, a rather complex but important detail is the wig. It is not easy to make it with your own hands identical to what is sold in the store, but you can build a version close to it, which is visually in no way inferior to the original. And as a last resort, you can always wear a bowler hat without using any wigs.
So, to create a fluffy clown wig, you will need a net: it is most convenient to work with a hairdressing salon sold in professional stores, but you can also resort to the one in which fruits or vegetables are packaged. In some ways, it is even more comfortable, since it has a greater degree of rigidity and fits better on a child’s head due to the smaller volume of the latter. Of course, you will need to select the mesh according to the circumference of the child’s head, after which the upper end will be tied with thread to form a kind of hat. This is a wig frame.
Now is the most creative and almost no-strict-rules moment: prepare several skeins of woolen thread of various colors, as well as a small amount of thin wire. If the threads are not colored, they must be painted using acrylic paints and given time for the paint to fade. Then the long thread from the skein is cut into pieces 14-20 cm long, after which they are tied to the mesh cells, and the knot should be located exactly in the middle of the segment. To prevent the artificial “hair” from looking too neat, the threads need to be ruffled, increasing their fluffiness; you can even backcomb them a little at the roots with a comb with metal teeth. And finally, randomly distribute the pieces of wire, wrapping threads around it to make the “curls” stand on end.
Parsley as a variant of a clown outfit
Parsley or a jester differs from a clown in that instead of a cap, there will be a funny cap with a pompom or tassel on his head. Petrushka is not a circus clown, but a traveling performer - a buffoon, so the outfit can be more “democratic”. In order to make a buffoon or a wandering gymnast out of a baby, you will need to cut and sew a one-piece jumpsuit, which is fastened with buttons from top to bottom. But the main feature of this outfit is that the left half will be strictly one color, and the right half will be another, usually contrasting.
Here are some suitable options
: red and green, yellow and red, blue and red, yellow and blue, yellow and orange. The cap will be the same: usually the jester wears a “two-horned” and two-color cap. If the left half of the suit is red and the right half is green, then for the cap everything should be the other way around: green on the left and red on the right. In this case, the green “horn” is decorated with a red bell (pompom). Parsley is the closest relative of the Italian Harlequin, only Harlequin had a black and white “chess suit”, and Russian buffoons came up with their own version.
Petrushka can have any shoes
. In Rus', buffoons usually wore bast shoes. But, since Petrushka is usually also a traveling acrobat, gymnastics shoes are suitable for the child. You can attach pompoms to them, like a circus clown.
The circus is always a joy, so any kid will be happy to put on a clown outfit and go to a matinee in it to entertain the “respectable audience.” The main thing is to approach the matter with imagination, to show imagination and ingenuity. Then the image of a circus performer will turn out to be cheerful, expressive, and original. You can dress up a girl as a “clown” by putting on her the same vest, cap and wide pants. The main thing is that the baby feels comfortable in the new image and enjoys his transformation.
