The peculiarity of gymnastic rings is that they are almost the only sports equipment that is not fixed in space. It belongs to the category of mounted ones and is considered quite difficult to master. The movements on it are refined, beautiful, strong. Many fans of artistic gymnastics enjoy watching the pull-ups, flips, and stances of professional athletes. However, not everyone is ready to correctly answer the question of why such a simulator is needed, and what sports equipment it can replace from the point of view of physical training.
History of origin
Historians are inclined to believe that gymnastics originated in Ancient Greece. It was there that they paid great attention to the physical education of future soldiers. But it should be noted that individual elements of gymnastics, as well as special complexes, appeared long before our era. The Chinese paid special attention to stretching, balance and the manifestation of strength. The ancient Greeks put into the word “gymnastics” many concepts related to human physical development. This included:
- athletic exercises;
- Horseback Riding;
- swimming;
- run;
- competitions with weights;
- struggle.
It is believed that the word “gymnastics” comes from the Greek root “gymnazo”, which means “to train”. There is another version according to which the term “gumnos” means “naked.” Therefore, Greek athletes always competed completely naked.
Not all cultures have embraced gymnastics as a blessing. For example, in Christianity, physical exercise was considered a satanic act. This faith tried to pay more attention to the spiritual development of the individual rather than to his physical perfection, so gymnastic training at that time was strictly prohibited.
Equipment in its modern version, including gymnastic equipment, appeared at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when many became addicted to “vaulting” - acrobatic exercises, climbing ropes, complex jumps, and performing complex coordination elements.
Modern artistic gymnastics owes its birth to the outstanding German teacher Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, who at the end of the 18th century created a system for the physical development of society and founded the first gymnastics society in Europe. Afterwards, Sweden, the Czech Republic, France and other countries adopted the experience. But the requirements for sports equipment and the rules for their use were constantly changing. Only in the mid-19th century was the first indoor gymnasium built, where sports competitions began to be held.
Dismount
The gymnast ends the combination on the rings with a forward or backward dismount. A single or double somersault is performed with or without a twist.
Backward swing jump from a bent over hang
- It is performed by actively extending the hip joints, moving the legs in an arc (up, forward, down, back) and pressing the rings with straight arms at the end of the backswing.
- The shoulders rise to the level of the rings, the body is arched.
- When performing a dismount, a throwing motion is made.
Arc dismount
- Performed from a hanging position in a bent position.
- Legs point up and forward.
- Actively straighten up.
- Extend your arms to the sides, pressing on the rings.
- At the moment of full extension, release your hands and jump off.
- The dismount is performed with a large amplitude.
Backwards dismount
- Performed from a hanging position in a bent position.
- Bend your legs up and back.
- Extend your straight arms to the sides, pressing on the rings and turning your hands forward.
- The dismount is completed by moving the arms up to the sides, lowering the rings and bending the body in flight.
Dismount with legs apart
- Performed with a forward swing.
- With a throwing movement of the legs, the body bends at the shoulder and hip joints.
- The pelvis is pressed tightly against the rings.
- Legs spread wide apart.
- After passing the vertical, the gymnast bends additionally, “driving” his legs back and down, after which he straightens and, moving his head back, turns back to point-blank range and releases the rings.
International standard of the Gymnastics Federation
What it is? Let's look at this issue in more detail. Gymnastics equipment can be found not only in prestigious sports complexes or school gyms, where they are suspended from the ceiling using strong ropes. They are frequent visitors to outdoor areas, where they are suspended from high horizontal bars. But the latter option does not belong to the category of full-fledged sports equipment and is intended exclusively for sports by people who lead an active lifestyle and monitor their health. According to gymnasts, it is not recommended to train professionally on such a simulator, since it does not meet the established requirements.
There are standards established at the legislative level for this type of projectile:
- Inner diameter – 18 cm.
- The mounting height of the crossbar for hanging (measured from the floor level) is 5.75 m.
- The distance between two ropes for holes is 0.5 m.
Why do you need such equipment? To develop statics and dynamics, and in the most complex execution, since the exercises involve short-term freezing of the body, which helps to increase physical load on all muscle groups.
What exercises are performed on the rings?
We will not describe the basic set of gymnastics elements for this apparatus. Professionals know it better than us, and not everyone can master swing, static or dynamic elements on their own. An experienced trainer is needed. We will talk about simple exercises that are accessible to anyone involved in fitness. First we need to hang our equipment just above floor level. In this position perform:
- Squats. With your feet shoulder-width apart, grab the rings and squat until your thighs are parallel to the floor. You can lock in this position, i.e. perform a static approach, or return to the starting position and squat two dozen times. This training reduces the load on the joints and helps maintain correct posture. It will be especially useful for overweight people. You can diversify the workout by changing the position of your legs: placing them wider or even squatting on one leg.
- Lunges. The starting position is the same as in squats. We grab the apparatus, step back once with one leg and bend both so that the thigh of the front leg and the shin of the back are parallel to the platform. We return to the starting position and change legs. We perform ten approaches. In this case, it is advisable to “fall out” backwards, not forwards. This puts more strain on the gluteal muscles. You can also do lunges to the sides, in three sets of ten times, working the inner thigh.
- Pull-up from below. Place yourself under the rings, grab them with your hands and pull yourself up towards them with your chest, keeping your back and legs straight. The chest and shoulder muscles are worked. Three sets of ten times will be enough.
- Push your hands into the rings, followed by pulling one or the other leg to your chest. The exercise resembles the movements of a mountain climber climbing a mountain and has the same name. Twenty movements are performed in three approaches.
Doing this combination twice a week will provide you with a slim, toned figure with defined muscles.
Kinds
The following types of materials are used in the manufacture of structures: plastic, metal and wood. Moreover, wooden shells appeared long before plastic was invented. Let's look at each option in more detail and determine the positive and negative characteristics of each product.
Wooden
They appeared very first and were very popular among athletes.
Advantages | Flaws |
It has excellent grip for a direct grip, as the material is able to absorb moisture released by the palms. | Being constantly outdoors, they quickly become unusable. |
Once polished, it feels great in your hands. | Short service life. |
Aesthetic. | The average price is quite significant. |
They are thicker than their analogues. |
Plastic
Not any material is suitable for manufacturing, but a special one - ABS.
pros | Minuses |
Inexpensive. | The grip on the palms is poor, especially when the hands are sweaty. |
Their service life is quite long. | They can slip, so you should pre-treat your palms with chalk. |
Shockproof. | It is difficult to maintain a reverse grip for a long time. |
Long-term training may cause damage to your hands. |
Metal
It is considered a fairly strong and wear-resistant equipment. The upper part is a rubber coating applied in a thick layer. This helps to avoid slipping and get rid of the feeling of cold that comes from any metal products.
Positive qualities | Negative qualities |
Durability. | Heavy weight. |
Used by athletes whose weight exceeds 100 kg. | They don't come on a budget. |
The kit also includes a cable. The more elastic it is, the less stress is placed on the muscles during dynamic exercises. In professional sports, steel cables with zero elasticity are used. Amateur options are usually hung on thick cords.
What are the diameters of rings? There are certain standards. Thus, exercise equipment for adults can be 28 mm, 30 mm and 32 mm thick. It all depends on the person’s build. It is worth noting that it is mainly men who train on such equipment and reach significant heights, whose weight is about 55 kg and height is approximately 165 cm. But not all men are “compact”. The larger the person, the thicker the weapon he will need.
A separate category includes exercise equipment for children. Their internal diameter is significantly smaller than in the adult version. If you want to devote yourself to this particular sport, then you need to start practicing from early childhood. This helps develop endurance, increase strength, mobility, and turn training into an amazing game that will bring pleasure to the child.
Wood or plastic?
In artistic gymnastics, wooden gymnastic rings were initially used.
However, due to the growing popularity of fitness classes, lightweight plastic models have become widespread. In fact, there are no defining differences between the specified materials of manufacture. However, there are still some features that deserve attention.
The sensations that the athlete experiences during training come first. The surface of the plastic is rough, which increases grip when in contact with the hands. In contrast, wooden products contain a smooth varnish finish. Both specifications are considered by individual athletes to be both advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on personal goals and needs.
If plastic rings have a perfect circle, then a wooden projectile has an oval shape. This difference affects the comfort of grip when performing certain exercises.
Tips for physical development
If a person leads a healthy lifestyle, monitors his health and physical development, he needs to use special sports equipment for regular training, for example, for fitness or gymnastics. It is worth keeping in mind that gymnastic devices help develop flexibility, endurance, and strength. Exercises with rings help strengthen the shoulder joints. Compared to other simulators, they have a number of undeniable advantages:
- Security. Barbells and dumbbells are much more dangerous.
- One projectile helps to develop strength, endurance, and flexibility at the same time.
- Both unprepared beginners and professionals can practice.
- They are convenient and simple.
- There is no need to install additional expensive equipment.
- Can be used both in the gym and at home.
- Classes are held for both adults and children.
Recommendations for functional training
Why are gymnastic rings important for sports? With them you can do the following exercises that are important for a person’s physical development:
- various hanging push-ups;
- various pull-ups;
- specific exercises involving vertical descents and ascents;
- exercises for boxers and bodybuilders: raising arms in a lying, standing, bending position.

How to make a mini sports complex for a child yourself
All parents dream of seeing their child healthy and happy and for this they spare no effort or money. You can, of course, choose products from the best manufacturers by first studying the ratings of quality exercise equipment. But they are usually too expensive in price and equipped with additional functionality that is unacceptable to you.
It is worth noting that the best things are made with your own hands. If you want to do good for your child and have enough free time, then you can set up a small gym right at home. It will take only 2 - 3 sq.m. free space and will bring a lot of pleasure to the baby, and will also bring him great benefits.
Positive aspects of having such a home sports corner:
- Active development of the child at any time convenient for him.
- A fun time.
- Preparing the body for future physical activity at school.
- Classes together with relatives.
- Development of the vestibular apparatus.
- Improving the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
- Development of correct coordination of movements.
To avoid injuring your daughter or son during classes, you need to take care of a high-quality mat. Main elements of the mini-complex:
- Swedish wall;
- gymnastic rings;
- low horizontal bar or parallel bars;
- hanging rope ladder;
- soft flooring.
Let's focus on making gymnastic rings with our own hands.
Step-by-step instruction
Required tools and materials:
- construction compass;
- plywood sheet measuring 75 by 75 cm, two pieces;
- bolts or press;
- wood glue;
- milling machine;
- rafters;
- jigsaw;
- screwdriver
Procedure:
- We draw both sheets of plywood into 6 identical squares and cut them out using a jigsaw.
- We take two squares and glue them together using wood glue. This makes two plywood sandwiches.
- In order for the structure to dry properly, it must be placed under a press for several days or tightened in the center and corners with bolts.
- In order to tighten the plywood blanks as much as possible, it is necessary to use screws or bolts for this purpose.
- After complete drying, you need to draw circles with an internal diameter of 180 mm on plywood blanks. The outer edge will be 205mm.
- Cut out the products carefully using a jigsaw.
- The structure must be given a circular cross-section. This can be done using a milling machine.
- Afterwards they are sanded and varnished.
- We take one side of the horizontal bar and use a drill to make holes in it at a distance of 40 cm.
- We pass the rafters through them and attach them at the required height. It is best to buy rafters in a specialized store. They must be reliable and durable, since the entire load falls on them. If your financial situation does not allow you to purchase an expensive product, then you can take a strong rope.

How to choose gymnastic rings
Let's consider the main criteria for choosing this sports equipment.
Material selection
It is very important to decide on the material of your simulator. Here are the options:
- wood;
- plastic;
- multilayer plywood.
Each option deserves separate consideration.
Tree
If the training room is equipped in an enclosed space or apartment, it is better to choose wood. It has good grip on the palms and pleases the eye with its beautiful texture, and is quite durable. For the manufacture of such equipment, hardwood is used:
- birch;
- oak;
- beech;
- hornbeam.
Typically, manufacturers do not coat their products with varnish or stain. A thorough, fine grinding is sufficient.
Products made from multilayer plywood
The same wood, characterized by increased strength, since the parts are made of multilayer material. The polished surface of plywood products is not inferior in quality to their wooden counterparts. This design is easy to make with your own hands.
Plastic
The best option for outdoor areas is products made from ABS plastic. On a note! ABS plastic is called an impact-resistant thermoplastic resin, in the production of which the starting material is a copolymer consisting of: acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene with a content of the first by volume ranging from 5 to 30%, the other two – in an amount of 40-60%.
They will withstand everything: autumn slush, summer heat and even winter cold, if the thermometer does not drop below - 40°C. Plastic products have one drawback - the outer diameter. All manufacturers sell products with a diameter of 28 mm. And although this is the standard diameter used in international competitions, some people find this cross-section to be insufficient. Manufacturers of wooden samples produce products with a cross section of 30 and 32 mm.
Homemade simulator
To make such a simulator at home, you will need square blanks made of moisture-resistant plywood glued together from birch veneer. The inner diameter of the projectile is 180 mm, the outer diameter is 28 or 30 mm. The procedure is as follows:
- Internal holes are cut out with a jigsaw in all workpieces.
- The resulting parts are coated with “Moment – Joiner” glue.
- The glued blanks are folded together, clamped with clamps and left until the glue hardens completely.
- After 24 hours, the resulting part is processed with a rasp, achieving the desired shape and size.
- The surfaces are finally sanded with sandpaper.
The inventory is ready. All that remains is to make the slings and hang your creation in the right place. We hope that the step-by-step instructions given here will help you make these simple products yourself.
Rings - trainers
Developed by CrossFit trainers. They are products of a traditional shape, the surface of which in the lower third is made flat in order to put on special overlays that increase the cross-section in the grip area. The point of the trick is that for beginner athletes who are mastering power-ups on such an unstable apparatus, it will be easier for them to perform it if they have a wider support. When the movement is mastered, these transformers can be replaced with standard equipment.
Today, fitness rooms are equipped with plastic and wooden products in almost equal shares. Wooden ones are considered more prestigious.

Ring program structure
Group 1 includes twists, large and double turns, and various lifts. Lifting allows the athlete to change position (hanging on the emphasis).
Group 2 included lifts through a backswing and a flip into a stance, as well as high revolutions.
Group 3 is a complex of complex flywheel elements, consisting of a high angle, a cross and horizontal stops.
Group 4 is a set of all static elements: corners, crosses, horizontal stops and hangers. This includes a complex of power lifting and lowering.
A dismount, representing a vertical somersault, completes the performance.
Composition of the panel of judges
The panel includes: the main panel of judges (GCJ), judges of teams D and E, timekeeper judge, judge responsible for the musical part, informing judge, secretaries. GSK creates an organization that conducts competitions.
The competition is managed by the GSK. It must include the following: the chief judge, the chief secretary and their deputies. Membership of athletes and coaches is not permitted.
Responsibilities of the chief judge:
- organization and preparation of competitions;
- consideration of applications to increase the height of the rings;
- holding an organizational meeting;
- provision of information data;
- ensuring a press conference;
- checking the organization of medical care;
- presentation of a report from the organization that held the competition.
Rights:
- allowing the gymnast to try again if the performance was hindered by a malfunction of the equipment or equipment, or if there was another reason beyond the control of the participant;
- punishment and removal of judges in exceptional cases (obvious judicial error);
- suspension and termination of competitions if their normal holding is impossible;
- removal from competitions of gymnasts, judges and coaches if they commit immoral acts;
- removal of unprepared participants.
The chief judge is also a member of the appeal jury, which is responsible for considering protests against the actions of the GSJ and teams of judges and making decisions on disciplinary punishment.
Grading system
The actions of the gymnasts during the performance are evaluated by the judges. In this case, the accuracy and correctness of all elements are taken into account; the assessment depends on these factors.
- The program runs without errors, the structure of the elements is not violated. Correct posture, large range of movements, their clarity, ease.
- Compliance of the content of the mandatory exercise with its description. Free tricks satisfy the requirements regarding composition and degree of difficulty.
- The beginning of the performance is the main stance that the gymnast takes in front of the apparatus, also in the case when assistants provide assistance.
- The end of the execution is the moment when the athlete lands and takes the main stance.
- For deviations from perfect execution and failure to comply with instructions regarding the content of the exercise, deductions are assigned.
- Large deductions are made for what is the main thing in a given element and determines its difficulty.
- In the performance, sometimes minor blemishes are allowed (in posture, insufficient lightness and expressiveness). Due to their small size, deductions are given for the totality of such errors.
- Evaluation occurs with an accuracy of 0.1 points.
While performing, a gymnast can make different types of mistakes. A minor error is an insignificant deviation from perfect execution, the deduction is 0.1 point. An average error is a significant deviation from ideal execution; the deduction will be 0.3 points. A gross error is a major distortion, including one bordering on non-compliance, the size of the deduction is 0.5-1.0 points. Error of non-execution - a change in a component of an exercise that resulted in the execution of another element, or a very large distortion.
Evaluation is carried out openly and the final grade is announced. The athlete is given one attempt to perform. If the gymnast was hampered by the faulty condition of the apparatus or there were other reasons beyond his control that led to improper performance, then he, having received the permission of the chief judge, has the right to repeat the attempt after a rest break.
Wall for little ones
If there is only enough space in the apartment for a children's sports corner, it can be attached to the load-bearing wall at only 2 points.
Scheme of a children's wall for preschoolers and primary schoolchildren:
To decorate the bowstrings, a construction board without defects and knots or plywood 20 mm thick is suitable.
Crossbars can be made from scraps of garden tool holders.
The crossbar of the horizontal bar is fixed in its holder with self-tapping screws (6 mm) from the front end of each of the brackets.
The equipment for such a sports corner is fastened to the wall using card loops.
To install a removable horizontal bar holder, the grooves of the brackets are placed on the crossbars of the wall bars. Next, turn the holder itself upward. And the grips of the stretch marks lead to the next crossbar (up). Then they pull the horizontal bar down onto the crossbar. And then it will hang “tightly”, no matter what the child does on it.
The algorithm for subsequent actions is as follows:
It should be very strong - you won’t be able to tear it off!
Swedish wall
Blueprints:
The upper and lower crossbars of such a wall make up an L-shaped holder for the horizontal bar. And they are connected by the crossbar of the horizontal bar itself (Ø 40 mm), which is inserted into holes of the same diameter. The crossbar is fixed with self-tapping screws (10 x 60), screwed into special holes, which are indicated in red in the diagram.
The same parts of the lower and upper parts of the holder are assembled into H-shaped units. And you get a removable and foldable children's horizontal bar, the upper part of the holder of which rotates freely on the crossbar.
