There are 2 main ways to make LED trees. Let's look at each of them

1. Glowing tree based on LED garland

The day of the beginning it is necessary to make a frame. It is best made from aluminum wire. Simply bend the wire at the desired angle, in the form of a small bush. If the wire is in white insulation, you can wrap it with black electrical tape, bringing the frame closer to a more realistic color.

Next, just wrap the resulting frame with a garland.

We also secure the garland to the frame using black electrical tape.

You can further decorate the LEDs by cutting out decorative attachments for them from transparent plastic.

The LED tree is ready. All that remains is to connect it to a power source.

The obvious advantage of this manufacturing method is its simplicity. However, there are also disadvantages. A tree made in this way cannot be made large enough. The standard length of the garland does not allow placing LEDs on all “branches” of the tree. If you use garlands over 10 m, then due to the large number of bends at the base, the central part of the frame will stand out too much. Therefore, we recommend using this method for making miniature trees.

2. Glowing tree based on LEDs.

Making an LED tree from single LEDs is a more labor-intensive process, however, this method does not have the disadvantages of using a ready-made garland and allows you to make a tree of any size and shape. For manufacturing we will need single 5mm LEDs.

We will also need resistors for the LEDs in order to equalize the voltage.

Let's move on to production. First you need to solder resistors to the LEDs. At the same time, we try not to hold the soldering iron on the soldering contacts for a long time, as there is a risk of damaging the LED. The LED has a short and a long contact leg, we determine which of them we will solder the resistor to and copy it to the others in the same way. We first shorten the resistor legs on one side.

We cut the heat shrink tube for the wire to such a length that it covers the soldering point and the resistor itself, leaving room only for soldering the power wire. We insert the tube onto the leg with the resistor and lightly warm it up with a lighter so that the insulation takes shape.

We also cut small branches, up to 10cm in size.

We calculate the number of LEDs on one branch.

Next, we tape small branches (10 cm) to the main branches (50 cm) with electrical tape. It is recommended to equalize the number of small branches with the number of LEDs on each main branch (in our case, 5 LEDs per branch). For ease of winding, take a small branch and bend it in the shape of the letter “g”, after which it is enough to attach it to the main branch and wrap it with electrical tape.

We wrap the LEDs on the edge of each branch with electrical tape.

After this, we stretch the wire along the entire length of the main branch to the very end and cut the wire. Don’t forget to take into account the bending of small branches and cut the wire to the required length.

We bend 5 cm on each main branch and wrap it to the tree trunk, doing this evenly along the entire diameter of the trunk.

When the branches are ready and tied to the trunk, we take the wires on each branch and wind them up, that is, we connect all the pros and cons of one branch. We do the same with all the main branches.

After this, you will have a number of pluses and minuses equal to the number of branches of the tree. We wrap up the pros with the pros, and the minuses with the cons and isolate them. All that remains is to wrap each branch with black electrical tape, decorate with decorative flowers and connect the tree to a power source.

All counters and shelves are full of various decorations for this wonderful holiday. The prices for “beautiful things” are sometimes simply prohibitive, and there is “zero” practical value. And they only make us happy for two or three weeks. in year. Today I want to share with you my experience of how to make a light tree for the New Year with your own hands. I’ll say right away that this experiment was new to me. I saw the light tree last year on New Year's Eve in Maxidom.

Its price seemed simply prohibitive to me, although now I don’t remember how much it cost. I felt it, looked at it, figured out what was what and decided to make a similar tree myself. But the New Year holidays flew by, gray frosty everyday life set in, and I successfully forgot that I was going to make a light tree. A year has almost flown by since then. And as soon as decorations for the New Year began to appear on the shelves of our stores again, I remembered about the light tree. I am sure that on the Internet there are a lot of articles, photographs and films on how to make a light tree yourself. I’ll say right away that I didn’t read or watch them. I decided that this would be my project from start to finish. It all started with finding the necessary parts. The first thing I did was find various wires, wire, and copper tubes. Priority was given to copper tubes and single-core wire trimmings.

In the garage I found the remains of a copper tube and a couple of wire strands. Copper is quite easy to bend and give the structure the desired look. And also adjust the branches during the production, use or storage of the tree. The stand was made from a piece of some kind of pipe found in the garage. I bent the ends in a vice, welded a 1/2-inch thread to one tube and screwed on a coupling found in the plumbing case at home. The result is this design:

Then he began to “stick” branches to the trunk. I flattened the copper wire and tubes with a hammer, drilled holes in the flattened part and attached them to the barrel using rivets. The result was a fairly strong connection.

I simply inserted the upper branches into the tube, using some kind of polyurethane tube as a seal. In fact, you can use anything in the house to attach branches to the trunk. Tubes, electrical tape, etc. Having finished installing the frame of the future light tree, I moved on to the long, tedious and painstaking work of installing the garland. The choice of garland was very simple. After last New Year, MOM gave me a garland, bought on sale for 99 rubles. The LED garland shines with blue light and has several lighting modes. Intermittent, continuous, fading, etc. I don’t even remember the number of diodes, I immediately threw the box away. Well, somewhere around 100-120 or 150 pieces. The garland was installed using black electrical tape.

Of course, the end result is worth it. After I finished installing the wiring, I tore some flowers that resembled sakura or something like that from another New Year's garland. I don’t know much about flowers, maybe it’s some other plant. Of course, there weren’t enough flowers for all the diodes, well, that’s even good, I glued the flowers with hot glue to the “best” places. I like.

The height of the tree is 1.35 m. And this is what it looks like when turned off.

I didn’t spend a single ruble to make this light tree! The garland was a gift, all sorts of pieces of iron were lying around in the garage, wire and tubes too. Electrical tape, coupling and wires were also lying around in the closet. Of course, they were once purchased for another business, but that's a completely different story. If you buy all the necessary materials for making a tree, including pipes and garlands, it will still be much cheaper than buying a finished tree. Plus you can feel like a designer.

Glowing bonsai

This creation was inspired by watching the movie Avatar. Remember the fluorescent trees that filled the night with colorful light, indescribable beauty.

Surely you have seen trees made of beads, man-made creations that are an analogue of natural beauty, less susceptible to the influence of time. The advantage of such trees is faster growth and the ability to set a unique shape, accurately recreating a mental image.

Not so long ago, “eternal flashlights” appeared on the market, in particular, devices with LEDs and solar batteries.

We combine the above, and together with diligence we can get a glowing beaded bonsai that looks like this:

Energy collection for recharging can be done in one of two directions: 1) Placing photodiodes in tree branches; 2) Install one solar cell next to a tree.

It all depends on your imagination, skill and diligence. For the example given, it was necessary to purchase about 60 meters of copper wire with a diameter of 0.3 mm and 2160 beads with a diameter of 3 mm. The beads can be anything, but in my attempt to recreate the effect of leaves, I used transparent green, 80 grams.

The very first stage, we make branches with leaves.

Next, you need to create a strong frame of wire with a diameter of about 2 mm; this will be the tree trunk. When placing LEDs on branches, leave a margin of length, as shown in the photo. This will be more convenient for further assembly. A supply at the roots is also required to assemble the circuit.

I used branches with photo and LED lights and five branches of leaves. To create a natural effect, we place dark photodiodes in the center, and the LED at the beginning of the branches with leaves, this will allow them to illuminate the entire branch.

Now you need to hide the electronic filling, there are many options: solder the roots, thread it through the holes, press it down, etc. In this case, holes were made in the bottom of the pot, roots were passed through them, and after placing the electronics, the container was filled with decorative stones.

BPW34 photodiodes were used, if you decide to use this direction of energy supply, then you need to use about 10 pieces together to ensure charging of the lithium-ion battery. We place them in the branches and lead the wires to the roots. Due to their location “in the foliage”, photodiodes cannot operate at full power due to the luminous flux reduced by the leaves.

Consider another solution to the energy supply problem. Keychains with solar panels have been sold in stores for a long time; their price is not high.

At the first stages of the calculation, it was assumed that a capacitor would be used as the main battery. But when I used the solar cell from the keychain, I felt sorry to leave the remaining parts of the keychain out of use, including the 3.7V and 40mAh lithium-ion battery. Using these parts made it easier to recreate the circuit.

If you use BPW34 photodiodes, then you need to use blocks of 10 series-connected photodiodes assembled in parallel.

The solar cell is connected through diode D1 and resistor R9, which allows transistor Q1 to play the role of dimming the LEDs based on the illumination information coming from the solar cell. Thus, the backlight turns on only in the dark and does not take power during the day, allowing the battery to charge. All that remains is to assemble the LEDs and resistors connected in series to them.

When hiding electronics with rocks, leave the solar cell uncovered, otherwise it will not work.

If necessary, all unreliable areas can be additionally insulated with black electrical tape. The same goes for wire connections in the plus and minus areas. Decorative items should be secured more efficiently so that they are not torn off by strong gusts of wind.

Most often, the following types of lamps are used for illumination:

conventional incandescent lamps are an undesirable option, especially for constant use - they often burn out, do not like dampness and consume a lot of energy;
LED lamps – perfect for outdoor use, consume little electricity, have a long service life, are environmentally friendly, and easy to install;
Solar-powered lamps are quite expensive, but are an ideal option for parents of small children, since they do not require wiring to be installed (however, they do not shine for long - about 3 - 4 hours).

How to use backlighting correctly?

First of all, the future plant must be drawn on a piece of paper, where you also need to indicate its height, diameter, length and number of branches.

Creating a trunk

The tree trunk is created very simply - just take a metal-plastic pipe and cut it to the desired height (see photo).

Construction of the frame

From wire of different thicknesses it is necessary to cut the required number of thick, medium and thin branches, and there should be as many of the latter as possible. For ease of installation, all branches are bent in the shape of the letter “L” and attached to the trunk.

Working with LEDs

Resistors are soldered to the LEDs, after which they are isolated. To do this, take electrical tape and a tube of approximately the same shade. The diameter of the tube should be such that the LEDs fit into it without problems. An electrical wire is attached to each such element. Next, the LEDs are attached to the tree branches. In this case, the wires from smaller branches should be connected into a bundle and connected to the wires of thicker branches. As a result, all existing wires are soldered into the main wire and run inside the metal-plastic pipe. At the same time, do not forget to isolate them.
